  • In general, pyroshock is generated from the actuation of separation devices for several stage, fairing, and satellite separation in the flight of a launch vehicle. During these events, transient vibration phenomenon called pyroshock, which shows large acceleration in the high frequency range, occurs and it can result in the malfunction of electronic components which is equipped inside the launch vehicle or satellite. In this paper, mesh washer isolators made out of SMA were introduced for the isolation of pyroshock. One type of isolator primarily used pseudoelastic characteristics of SMA and the other type of isolator used shape memory effect of SMA. For the study of basic load-displacement relationship of each SMA isolator, compressive loading tests were performed and the results showed the capability of the isolator itself. Pyroshock isolation tests were followed and verified the outstanding isolation performance of isolator. In addition, random vibration tests were also performed and checked the dynamic characteristics of each SMA isolator.

  • In the recent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. The dynamic characteristic analysis of SMA is necessary for actuator application and many common researches report the material characteristics of SMA sufficiently. However, the research on dynamic characteristics is very deficient. In this paper, the helical spring are fabricated with NiTi SMA wire of high resistivity, The force, response speed, temperature, and displacement are measured by digital force gauge, infrared thermometer, and laser displacement sensor so that the dynamic characteristics of this SMA is analyzed. Also, bidirectional actuator was fabricated and experimented for its performance.

  • In this study, we observe the application of shape memory alloy(SMA) into smart structures for repeatable actuation, because SMA changes its material properties and characteristics progressively under cyclic loading conditions and finally reaches stable path(state) after a certain number of stress/temperature loading-unloading cycles, so called 'training'. In this paper, SMA wires that have been in a stable state through the training are used. Stress-strain curve of the SMA wire at different temperature levels are measured. In addition, we observe other important effects such as the rate effect according to strain rates for rapid actuation response. The current work presents the experimental test using SMA wire after training completion by mechanical cycling. Through these tests, we measure the characteristics of SMA. With the estimated SMA properties and effects, we compare the experimental results with the simulation results based on the SMA constitutive equations.

  • The influence of the strain-rate on the superelastic behaviors of shape memory alloys (SMAs) wires is experimentally and numerically investigated. The one-dimensional SMA constitutive equations considering strain-rate effect is developed. The evolution of stress-strain curves of SMA wires is examined with various strain-rates. Results show that the superelastic behaviors of SMAs may significantly be changed depending on the variation of strain-rate.

  • Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) has been used in many engineering fields because of its good characteristics of actuator. For example, SMA wire can be embedded easily in the polymer composite laminate and then be used as actuator for structural control. Since the strain have a significant influence on the electrical resistance of SMA wire, It is a possible to use the SMA wire as a sensor of such physical quantities. In this study, the possibility for the application of Ni-Ti SMA wire as a sensor embedded within a composite laminate is investigated.

  • The influence of the strain-rate on the thermomechanical characteristics of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is numerically investigated. The three-dimensional SMA constitutive equations of strain-rate effect is developed. The strain-rate effect is taken into account by introducing a coupling equation between the production rate of martensite and the temperature change. For the numerical results, the SMA algorithm is implemented into the ABAQUS finite element program. Numerical simulation shows that the pseudoelasticity of SMA may significantly be changed by considering the strain-rate due to the temperature change.

  • Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) undergo changes in shape and hardness when heated or cooled, and do so with great force. Since wire-type SMAs contract in length when heated and pull with a surprisingly large force and move silently, they can be used as actuactors which replace motors. These SMA actuators can be heated directly with electricity and can be used to create a wide range of motions. This paper presents the mechanical design and control for a three fingered, six degree-of-freedom robotic hand actuated by SMA actuators. Each finger has two joints and each joint is actuated with two tendons in the antagonistic manner. In order to create the sufficient force to make the smooth motion, the tendon is composed of two SMA actuators in parallel. For controlling the current to heat the SMA actuators, PWM drivers are used. In experiments, the antagonistic interaction of fingers are evaluated.
