Geochemical Approach to Define the Fracture Bone Affected by the Ubo Fault at the Northern Part of the Hwabuk Dam (화북댐 상류지역을 통과하는 우보단층 파쇄대 영향분석을 위한 지화학적 접근)

  • The Ubo fault Bone, which cross over the northwestern to southeastern direction at the Hwabuk damsite in Hakseongri, Gunwigun, Gyeongsangbukdo Province, has length about 20km. The Ubo fault zone in this area is segmented to several small faults and makes a gentle slope and hill along the right side of the drainage in the Hwabuk dam. In the storage area of Hwabuk dam, 2 pairs of faults occur and the width of fracture zones are about 2m. To define the fracture Bone using the geochemical data, the samples were collected at 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 4m, 8m, 16m and 32m apart from the center of the main fracture Bone toward north and south, respectively, and analyzed for major elements and mineral content Approaching the fracture Bone, Fe$_2$O$_3$, MgO, K$_2$O, quartz, muscovite and chlorite are increasing and Na$_2$O, CaO, plagioclase and biotite are decreasing, respectively. Based on the rock chemistry and mineral content, the range of the main fracture zone affected by the Ubo fault at Hakseongri is 2m width in total, the secondary deformed zone is 8m width in total. Finally the maximum affected range by the Ubo fault is inferred to 16m width in total.

Distribution of Pyroclastic Density Currents Determined by Numerical Model at Mt. Baekdu Volcano (백두산 화산에서 수치모형 분석에 의한 화쇄류의 영향 범위)

  • We assumed the situation where an eruption column had been formed by the explosive Plinian eruption from Mt. Baekdu and that the collapse of eruption column had caused pyroclastic density currents to occur. Based on this assumption, we simulated by using a Titan2D model. To find out about the range of the impacts of pyroclastic density currents by volcanic eruption scenarios, we studied the distance for the range of the impacts by VEIs. To compare the results by each volcanic eruption scenario, we set the location of the vent on the 8-direction flank of the outer rim and on the center of the caldera, the internal friction angle of the pyroclastic density currents as $35^{\circ}$, the bed friction angle as $16^{\circ}$. We set the pile height of column collapse and the vent diameter with various VEIs. We properly assumed the height of the column collapse, the diameter of the vent, the initial rates of the column collapse and the simulation period, based on the VEIs, gravity and the volume of the collapsed volcanic ash. According to the comparative analysis of the simulation results based on the increase of the eruption, the higher VEI by the increase of eruption products, the farther the pyroclastic density currents disperse. To the northwest from the vent on the northeast slope of the outer rim of the caldera, the impact range was 3.3 km, 4.6 km, 13.2 km, 24.0 km, 50.2 km, 83.4 km or more from VEI=2 to VEI=7, respectively. Once the database has been fully constructed, it can be used as a very important material in terms of disaster prevention and emergency management, which aim to minimize human and material damages in the vicinity of Mt. Baekdu when its eruption causes the pyroclastic density currents to occur.

Univariate Analysis of Soil Moisture Time Series for a Hillslope Located in the KoFlux Gwangneung Supersite (광릉수목원 내 산지사면에서의 토양수분 시계열 자료의 단변량 분석)

  • Soil moisture is one of the essential components in determining surface hydrological processes such as infiltration, surface runoff as well as meteorological, ecological and water quality responses at watershed scale. This paper discusses soil moisture transfer processes measured at hillslope scale in the Gwangneung forest catchment to understand and provide the basis of stochastic structures of soil moisture variation. Measured soil moisture series were modelled based upon the developed univariate model platform. The modeling consists of a series of procedures: pre-treatment of data, model structure investigation, selection of candidate models, parameter estimation and diagnostic checking. The spatial distribution of model is associated with topographic characteristics of the hillslope. The upslope area computed by the multiple flow direction algorithm and the local slope are found to be effective parameters to explain the distribution of the model structure. This study enables us to identify the key factors affecting the soil moisture distribution and to ultimately construct a realistic soil moisture map in a complex landscape such as the Gwangneung Supersite.

  • The landslide survey in an area of about 10 ha was carried out in Hyuseok-dong. Youngchoon-myeon, Danyang-gun, Choongcheongbuk-do. The results showed that there were many indications on geographical changes, such as scars, depressions, upheavals, cracks and destructions of the construction features. The mean degree of slope of the study area was $28^{\circ}$. The results of surface displacement in this area showed that landslide mass is moving in the direction of SE~SEE, and horizontal and vertical movement rate of the center of moving mass was about 1.2m/year and 0.86m/year, respectively. It was estimated that the amount of the soil erosion in the cliff at the lower edge of this area was 0.823m due to the caving erosion by the Namhangang(River) from June through November, 1995.

The Productivity and Cost of Yarding Operations Using a Tractor-attached Winch in Pinus densiflora Stands (소나무 임분에서의 트랙터윈치를 이용한 집재작업 생산성 및 비용분석)

  • The present study analyzed the productivity and cost of winching operations for evaluating the efficiency of a tractor-attached winch in a Pinus densiflora thinning site located in the Yangyang County of Gangwon-do. The mean yarding distance and mean timber volume were 29 m and 0.15 ㎥, respectively. In the 95 cycles of yarding operations, the uphill and downhill yarding operations constituted 51% and 49%, respectively, of the total yarding operations. The productivity of the uphill yarding operation was 2.28 ㎥/h, and the productivity of the downhill yarding operation was 1.89 ㎥/h. The findings of this study revealedthat productivity would increase by 0.5 ㎥/h when the rate of utilization of the machine is increased to 80% by reducing the operational delay time. The cost of the downhill yarding operation was 44,116 KRW/㎥, whereas that of the uphill yarding operation was 53,369 KRW/㎥. The difference in cost resulted from the difference in the number of yarding stems (stems/cycle). Furthermore, the results of the multiple linear regression equation developed for predicting the yarding operation times showed that productivity was significantly affected by working conditions such as yarding distance (m), the number of stems per cycle (stems/cycle), and the terrain slope (%) in the uphill and downhill yarding operations. Further research is required for developing an accurate prediction model equation according to a yarding direction.

  • The aim of this study was to characterize the forest vegetation and site of Tongdaesan(Odaesan National Park) for ecological forest management. The deciduous forests of Tongdaesan are the result of cool, temperate climate. Direction and slope morphology contribute to differences in species composition and vegetaion structure. Based on the BRAUN-BLANQUET-approach, 242 releves were recorded and subsequently classified. The vegetation could be divided into two forest community groups, seven forest communities, and several groups. South exposed, dry slopes were covered with forests of the Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudo-sieboldianum community group. Differential species included grasses and sedges, e.g., Calamagrostis langsdorfii, Carex humilis and C. lanceolata. Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudo-sieboldianum community group could be subdivided into Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum community, Lespedeza${\times}$tomentella community, Carex humilis-Maackia amurensis community, Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum typical community and Pimpinella brachycarpa community. Carex humilis-Maackia amurensis community was divided into Galium kinuta subcommunity and typical subcommunity. Pimpinella brachycarpa community was divided into Vicia venosa var. cuspidata subcommunity and typical subcommunity. On north exposed, more humid and moist sites, forests of the Dryopteris crassirhizoma-Cornus controversa community group were found. This group was subdivided into Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes-Acer tegmentosum community and Deutzia glabrata-Ulmus laciniata community. Deutzia glabrata-Ulmus laciniata community was divided into Acer tegmentosum subcommunity, Saxifraga punctata subcommunity and typical subcommunity.

Development of a 2 Dimensional Numerical Landscape Evolution Model on a Geological Time Scale (2차원 지질시간 규모 수치지형발달모형의 개발)

  • Advances in computer technology have enabled us to develop and use numerical landscape evolution models (NLEMs) for exploring the dynamics of geomorphic system from a variety of viewpoints which previously could have not been taken. However, as of yet there have been no trials using or developing NLEMs in Korea. The purpose of this research is to develop a 2 dimensional NLEM on a geological time scale and evaluate its usefulness. The newly developed NLEM (ND-NLEM) treats bedrock weathering as one of the major geomorphic processes and attempts to simulate the thickness of soil. As such it is possible to model the weathering-limited as well as the transport-limited environment on hillslopes. Moreover the ND-NLEM includes not only slow and continuous mass transport like soil creep, but also rapid and discrete mass transport like landslides. Bedrock incision is simulated in the ND-NLEM where fluvial transport capacity is large enough to move all channel bed loads, such that ND-NLEM can model the detachment-limited environment. Furthermore the ND-NLEM adopts the D-infinity algorithm when routing flows in the model domain, so it reduces distortion due to the use of the steepest descent slope flow direction algorithm. In the experiments to evaluate the usefulness of the ND-NLEM, characteristics of the channel network observed from the model results were similar to those of the case study area for comparison, and the hypsometry curve log during the experiment showed rational evidence of landscape evolution. Therefore, the ND-NLEM is shown to be useful for simulating landscape evolution on a geological time scale.

A Study on the Evaluation and Analysis of Convenient Facilities in Social Welfare Hall through Consideration of the Disabled Person Use (장애인 이용을 고려한 사회복지관 편의시설 평가 및 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The number of the disabled is increasing every year. Growing interest in social welfare, but still the disabled person in places is restricted on the activities are due to obstacles. This study proposes an improvement direction through an research and analysis of installation status of convenient facilities in social welfare halls was planned after that the law of increase of convenience for the disabled person is enforced in 1998. This study analyzed nine social welfare halls of seoul including Yongsan-gu(GW), Guro-gu(GD, HW), Yeongdeungpo-gu(SG), Seodaemun-gu(SD), Dobong-gu(DB), Nowon-gu(NS), Seongbuk-gu(WG) and Dongdaemun-gu(JG). The evaluation criteria for the installation of convenient facilities for the disabled person in each social welfare hall based on the law of increase of convenience for the disabled person, and referred to other data. Also, review the criteria for the installation of convenient facilities, and grasp the present situation through the survey of convenient facilities in social welfare halls, and provides the installation standards of convenient facilities. The result are as followings. There were many problems to be improved in approach of the intermediate space, parking lot, entrance of the inside space and corridor that must be installed for the convenience of the disabled. In the intermediate space, the slope of the ramp, curb, induction handle etc. for a safety must be installed. Parking spaces for the disabled must be located closest to the main entrance, an induction marker or the handle, and the attachment of a directional sign etc. must be improved. In the inside space, it is convenient for the disabled person use to install an automatic door and swing door simultaneously at the main entrance. And, the height of the door handle, an induction block, a braille display panels of the appropriate height in the entrance, a braille display in start and end of the stairs handle, the handle of the side wall, the stairs to prevent slippage etc. must be improved in the corridors. The case of the sanitation which is a recommendation item is equipped formally with disabled toilets are difficult to use. Information and other convenience facilities for the disabled person in all the social welfare halls were not considered.

Study of Pro-environmental Development for Golf Course in Korea (한국 골프장의 친환경적 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Nowadays, there are increasing demands of golf courses and it is necessary to make more golf courses than the present. To do this, we need to improve the environmental problems with the regional inhabitants, and it is said that the first thing to be considered in developing any golf course in Korea is to preserve the environment. In this context, the purpose of this study is to set forth several design factors to lessen the negative impacts which are accompanied with the development of golf courses. 1. The present conditions of golf courses in Korea Many new golf courses have come into being, particularly since the late 1980s, and now, in the year of 1997, over one hundred of golf courses are doing their business, yet the number of golf course is still less than required. So far, over a half of them have been made in the vicinity of Seoul on account of various reasons, and this has adversely affected on our natural environment. This unreasonable development of golf courses has caused serious water pollution, landslides and the other problems. Also, the topography of Korea is not good for golf courses. Although the demands of golf courses are increasing, the suitable sites for them are very limited, and therefore it is sometimes unavoidable to make golf courses on steep hills. Impacts of wave and tidal forcing on 3D nearshore processes on natural beaches. Part I: Flow and turbulence fields

  • The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model - combining the flow module of Delft3D with the WAVE solver of XBeach - of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics that can simulate flow, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. Surf-swash zone hydrodynamics were modeled using the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, combined with various turbulence models (${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES). Sediment transport and resulting foreshore profile changes were approximated using different sediment transport relations that consider both bed- and suspended-load transport of non-cohesive sediments. The numerical set-up was tested against field data, with good agreement found. Different numerical experiments under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were run to test the model's capability to reproduce 3D flow, wave propagation, sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore at the field scale. The results were interpreted according to existing understanding of surf and swash zone processes. Our numerical experiments confirm that the angle between the crest line of the approaching wave and the shoreline defines the direction and strength of the longshore current, while the longshore current velocity varies across the nearshore zone. The model simulates the undertow, hydraulic cell and rip-current patterns generated by radiation stresses and longshore variability in wave heights. Numerical results show that a non-uniform seabed is crucial for generation of rip currents in the nearshore (when bed slope is uniform, rips are not generated). Increasing the wave height increases the peaks of eddy viscosity and TKE (turbulent kinetic energy), while increasing the tidal amplitude reduces these peaks. Wave and tide interaction has most striking effects on the foreshore profile with the formation of the intertidal bar. High values of eddy viscosity, TKE and wave set-up are spread offshore for coarser grain sizes. Beach profile steepness modifies the nearshore circulation pattern, significantly enhancing the vertical component of the flow. The local recirculation within the longshore current in the inshore region causes a transient offshore shift and strengthening of the longshore current. Overall, the analysis shows that, with reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to simulate the nearshore hydrodynamics subjected to oceanic forcing, consistent with existing understanding of this area. Part II of this work presents 3D nearshore morphodynamics induced by the tides and waves.
