  • The degree to which microenvironmental factors are linked to spatial patterns of vegetational factors within ecosystems has important consequences for our understanding of how ecosytems are structured and for conservation of rare species in ecosystems. We studied this relationships between the spatial patterns of microenvironmental factors and vegetational factors in temperate hardwood forest in Mt. Jumbong Biological Reserve Area, Korea. To do this, environmental and vegetational factors from 196 micropoints in a 0.49 ha plot were investigated. Most of all environmental factors and vegetational factors showed the variations among micropoints. Microtopographic factors, litter depth, soil moisture content and relative light intensity at this site were spatially dependent at a scale of 14∼62 m. Coverage of tree and shrub layer and species diversity of herb layer in autumn were spatially dependent at a scale of < 15 m. Species richness and species diversity of herb layer in spring and species richness of herb layer in autumn were spatially dependent at a scale of 28∼48 m. Multiple regression analysis showed that spatial patterns of species richness and species diversity of herb layer in spring and autumn were affected by litter depth, slope, subtree layer, shrub, Sasa borealis etc. The best predictor for the spatial patterns of species richness and species diversity of herb layer at this site was the spatial pattern of litter depth. Species richness and species diversity of herb layer showed strongly negative correlation with litter depth. We estimate that the spatial pattern of litter depth at this site were affected by direction of wind, microtopography and spatial pattern of shrub layer.

  • The terrain features and surface characteristics are the most important elements not only in meteorological modeling but also in air quality modeling. The diurnal evolution of local climate over complex terrain may be significantly controlled by the ground irregularities. Such topographic features can affect a thermally driven flow, either directly by causing changes in the wind direction or indirectly, by inducing significant variations in the ground temperature. Over a complex terrain, these variations are due to the nonuniform distribution of solar radiation, which is highly determined by the ground geometrical characteristics, i.e. slope and orientation. Therefore, the accuracy of prediction of regional scale circulation is strong associated with the accuracy of land-use and topographic information in meso-scale circulation assessment. The objective of this work is a numerical simulation using MM5-A2C model with the detailed topography and land-use information as the surface boundary conditions of the air flow field in mountain regions. Meteorological conditions estimated by MM5-A2C command a great influence on the dispersion of mountain areas with the reasonable feature of topography where there is an important difference in orographic forcing.

  • Recently, the frequency of debris flow disaster has increased, which is one of the natural disasters during extremely heavy rainfall condition. This paper described the analysis method about deposition characteristics of debris flow using topographic characteristics of debris flow path. First, we observed topographic changes by differencing high- resolution LiDAR DEMs acquired before and after the occurrence of debris flow event. We assumed that deposition on outside of debris flow path was generated by movements due to the inertia of debris flows. Then, we analyzed three topographic characteristics of debris flow path: slope in flow direction, transition angle of flow path, and the net efficiency(L/H) of debris flows defined by the ratio of transport length(L) and elevation difference(H). We applied this method to Umyeon Mountain debris flow event in July 2011. The results showed that deposition on outside of debris flow path due to the inertia of debris flows was significantly related to the transition angle of debris flow path. Also, we figured out that there were more frequent such depositions in locations where the ratio of 'transition angle / (L/H)' is over 8.

  • A numerical model was developed to predict the stage-discharge curve and lateral distribution of unit discharge in open channels with nonuniform cross section or compound open-channels. The governing equation is the one-dimensional momentum equation based on assumptions of the steady and uniform flow conditions in the longitudinal direction and the uniform water surface elevation in a cross section. Vegetative drag force term was included in governing equation in order to reflect the effect of floodplain vegetation on the flow characteristics. Finite element method was applied to obtain the numerical solution of the governing equation. Stage-discharge curve and lateral distribution of unit discharge for a given water surface are calculated based on input data, such as the cross sectional geometry, Manning's roughness coefficient, vegetative information and longitudinal slope of channel bed. The developed model was verified by comparing the calculated results with the observed data and the results of Darby and Thorne's(1996) model and the nonlinear k-$\epsilon$ model. The verified model was applied to estimate the upstream boundary conditions in two-dimensional flow model. The numerical results using laterally distributed unit discharge were compared with those obtained using uniformly distributed unit discharge in two-dimensional flow model.

  • Bangudae Petroglopys of the national treasure No. 285 located in elevation of 53 m to 57 m have been damaged by repetition of submergence and exposure due to the Sayeon-dam of EL.60 m constructed in down stream. In this study, as a preservation plan of the petroglyphs from the contact with water, the construction of eco-levee was suggested and its effect was investigated in the views of hydraulic engineering. It was designed to be located aside of 80 m from Bangudae Petroglyphs with the length of 440 m in streamwise direction, and it was need to construct a new channel maintaining the original hydraulic capacity and conveyance. Hydraulic characteristics such as water surface elevations and velocities near Bangudae Petroglyphs were measured after the eco-levee was installed in the hydraulic model with the scale of 1:50. It showed that there were not much changes of water surface elevations and velocities between sayeon-dam spillway EL. 60 m (Suggestion 1) and EL. 54 m (Suggestion 2). It was concluded the eco-levee could be made of natural materials like soil, pebble, gravel in terms of allowable velocity and shear stresses. The slope of water surface at Suggestion 2 was steeper, and velocities near Bangudae Petroglyphs were also faster than Suggestion 1. As the vorties occured at the left side in Suggestion 2, more detailed study is required.

  • We have fabricated and analyzed the lasing characteristics of 1.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ Spot-Size-Converter (SSC) integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) laser diodes, which are very promising light sources for optical subscriber networks. SSC-LDs has been developed by BIB (buttjoint-built-in) coupling and selective MOVPE growth. High-performances were achieved such as the slope efficiency from the SSC facet of 0.23-0.32 mW/mA, the full-width at the half maximum of the far-field pattern (FFP) of 9.5$^{\circ}$~12.3$^{\circ}$, the alignment tolerances of $\pm$2.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ and $\pm$2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ within the extra-coupling loss of 1 dB for the vertical and parallel directions, respectively. These experimental results were compared to theoretical ones in order to clarify the operational problems and give a good design direction of the fabricated SSC-LDs. It was revealed that an asymmetric output power from the facets, an irrelevancy of FFP and the waveguide structure around SSC facet region, and a poor temperature characteristics were originated from the scattering in the BIB and SSC sections and SHB effect in the active section for the first time.t time.

  • When deformation occurs on slope reinforced with anchor, shear stress and bending stress are applied on the shear surface along the slip surface and increase of the shear deformation causes the tension force variation of the anchor. In this study, shear test was performed by measuring the tension force of the anchor by inducing shear deformation in vertical direction of the anchor using a large-scale direct shear test equipment in order to confirm the tension force variation of the anchor induced by shear deformation. The shear test was performed for 8 conditions which were classified according to the anchor reinforcement, separation distance (1D, 2D, 4D) from the shear surface to bonded part and the lateral-pressure condition (0.1 MPa, 0.2 MPa) of adjacent ground. As a result of the shear test, it was found that the separation distance and the lateral-pressure condition affect the shear force of the ground reinforced by anchor and the tension force of the anchor, and experimentally verified that the shear force variation is related to axial force variation of the anchor head and tip. Therefore, it was confirmed that the behavior of the bonded part induced by the shear deformation can be indirectly predicted by analyzing the tendency of the tension force variation of the anchor head.

  • In order to find out the environment vulnerable to cigarette fire in which smoldering fire grows into flame fire, a cigarette combustion test and numerical analysis were performed using fallen leaves of P. densiflora and Q. variabilis. Tests were repeated five times on 2,304 conditions with four cases of fuel moisture content, six cases of velocity, two cases of cigaret location against direction of the wind, three cases of cigaret location against fallen leaves, two species of thickness of cigaret, two cases of slope conditions and two cases of fragileness of fallen leaves. Cigaret fire's flammability to the fallen leaves was monitored by analyzing heat transfer process using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) under the most optimal condition through an ignition test on 2,304 conditions. The result of a cigaret fire ignition test for fallen leaves, found ignition in 197 conditions out of 2,304 conditions representing 8.6% while 13 conditions representing approximately 0.6% saw ignition across five repeated tests. The result of CFD analysis, the temperature of the bottom of fallen leaves was reached on self-ignition and pilot-ignition temperature.

  • With the accumulations of outcomes from archaeological excavations of mountain fortress of three kingdoms period, there have been studies about time-periodic territory range of mountain fortress, difference in the way(method) of construction, defence system and so on from various points of view. This is an empirical study on the construction method of the valley part of stone fortress. First of all, it is required to secure large quantity of fresh water for those who lived at mountain fortress. Especially when builders of fortress construct a fortification at the valley part of stone fortress, in advance they must sufficiently consider several options including the establishment of sustainable water resources. First, when it comes to build a fortification on a ridge[or a slope] of a mountain, you have only to consider a vertical stress. However, when it comes to build a fortification at the valley part of a mountain, You must have more sufficient preparations for the constructing process. Because there are not only a vertical stress but also a horizontal pressure simultaneously. Second, a fortification of mountain fortress built by using unit building stone is a structure of masonry construction like brick construction, and the valley part of it is where the construction of the fortification begins. Third, when it comes to build a fortification at the valley part of a mountain, it seems that they use a temporary method such as coffer dam in oder to prevent the collapse of the fortification due to heavy rain. Furthermore, in response to a horizontal pressure a fortification is built by the way of its plane make an arch, or by piling up the soil with the plate method(類似版築) and earthen wall harder method(敷葉) they increase cross-sectional area of the fortification and its cutoff capacity. In front direction they put the reservoir facility for the fear that the hydraulic pressure and earth pressure are directly transmitted to the fortification. The process of constructing the fortification at the valley part of a mountain is done in the same oder as follows; leveling of ground(整地) ${\Rightarrow}$ construction of coffer dam ${\Rightarrow}$ construction of the fortification between the both banks of the valley ${\Rightarrow}$ construction of the fortification at bottom part of spill way(餘水路) between the both banks of the valley ${\Rightarrow}$ construction of spill way(餘水路) & reservoir facility ${\Rightarrow}$ construction of the fortification at upper part of spill way between the both banks of the valley. Coffer dam facility seems to be not only the protection device on occasion of flood but also an important criterion to measure the proper height of spill way or tailrace(放水路). This study has a meaningful significance in that it empirically examines the method of reduction of the horizontal pressure which the fortification at the valley part of a mountain takes, the date the construction was done, and wether the changes in climate such as heavy rainfall influence the process of construction.
