Rethinking the Innovation Approach in Developing Countries

  • As reflected in the title, the main objective of the paper is to explore an appropriate approach to promote technological innovation for developing countries. Aiming to this goal, the paper studies three main innovation system approaches, whose implantation is being attempted in developing countries: first, national innovation systems (NIS), which was developed in OECD countries; second, the system of innovation for development (SID), which is a concept that tries to adapt NIS to developing countries; and third, inclusive innovation which is a pro-poor innovation system. Based on the strengths and the weaknesses of each concept and their potential adaptation in developing countries, the paper proposes an integrated approach of innovation system for developing countries. Compared to developed countries, the concept of innovation system in developing countries should be more complex because it involves not only the formal sector such as enterprises, universities, research institutes, government, and financial system but it also involves NGOs, informal companies, grassroots inventors, local and indigenous knowledge, etc. The last part of the paper discusses the ideas that innovation stakeholders in developing countries can use to promote their proper innovation system.

  • A finite element method analysis framework is introduced for the free vibration analyses of functionally graded porous beam structures by employing two variables trigonometric shear deformation theory. Both Young's modulus and material density of the FGP beam element are simultaneously considered as grading through the thickness of the beam. The finite element approach is developed using a nonlocal strain gradient theory. The governing equations derived here are solved introducing a 3-nodes beam element. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out, with a particular focus on the effects of various structural parameters such as the dispersion patterns of GPL reinforcements and porosity, thickness ratio, boundary conditions, nonlocal scale parameter and strain gradient parameters. The results indicate that porosity distribution and GPL pattern have significant effects on the response of the nanocomposite beams.

Effects of Single Cell Protein Replacing Fish Meal in Diet on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Intestinal Morphology in Weaned Pigs

  • Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the ME value, standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) of fish meal, and the effects of single cell protein (Prosin and Protide) replacing fish meal in diet on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology in weaned piglets. In Exp. 1, twenty-four barrows with initial BW of $30.8{\times}2.6kg$ were allotted to one of four dietary treatments. Diet 1 contained corn as the only energy source. The other three diets replaced 20% of the corn in diet 1 with one of the three protein feeds (fish meal, Prosin and Protide), and the DE and ME contents were determined by difference. In Exp. 2, eight barrows (initial BW of $25.6{\pm}3.2kg$) were fitted with ileal T-cannulas and allotted to a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Three cornstarch-based diets were formulated using each of the protein feeds as the sole source of AA. A nitrogen-free diet was also formulated to measure endogenous losses of AA. In Exp. 3, one hundred and eighty piglets (initial BW of $7.95{\pm}1.59kg$) weaned at $28{\times}2d$ were blocked by weight and assigned to one of five treatments for a 28-d growth performance study, each treatment was fed to six pens with six pigs (three barrows and three gilts) per pen. The five treatments consisted of the control group (CON), which was a corn-soybean meal diet containing 5% fish meal, and the other four treatments, which replaced a set amount of fish meal with either Prosin (2.5% or 5%) or Protide (2.5% or 5%). The diets were formulated to provide same nutrient levels. The results showed that on a DM basis, both of the DE and ME contents were lower in Prosin and Protide than that of fish meal (p<0.05). The SID of CP and all essential AA were greater in fish meal than in Prosin and Protide (p<0.05). The pigs fed CON diet had greater weight gain and lower feed conversion rate (FCR) than pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). The digestibility of CP was greater in pigs fed CON, 2.5% Prosin and 2.5% Protide diets than the pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). Villus height in jejunum and ileum, and villus height to crypt depth ratio in the jejunum were higher (p<0.05) in pigs fed CON, 2.5% Prosin and 2.5% Protide diets compared with the 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets. Pigs fed CON diet had greater villus height to crypt depth ratio in the ileum than the pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). In conclusion, although Prosin and Protide contained lower ME content and SID of AA than fish meal, Prosin and Protide replacing 50% of fish meal in diet with identical nutrient levels could obtain similar performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology in weaned pigs.

  • A 900 g seven-month-old female scarlet macaw was referred to Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with history of rupture of a crop. Formula leaking from the crop fistula onto the chest feathers was found. According to history taking, and physical examination, the avian was diagnosed as the burns on both right and left surface of the crop. After anesthetizing it with ketamine(50 mg/kg, IV), necrotic tissue of the skin and crop was excised. The crop wall and skin were closed in layer by layer. Metronidazole (50 mg/kg, sid, PO) was administered for 5 days postoperatively. The meal was given frequently with smaller amount. There has not been any digestive problem for 2 months after treatment.

  • After analyzing each procedure from standard instrument procedures used at Incheon International Airport, which is believed to have caused noise problems in and around Ganghwa island, we came to a conclusion that some Standard Instrument Departure Procedures and Standard Instrument Approach Procedures need to be revised, and therefore we made some propositions with regard to noise abatement procedures(CDA, RNAV approach etc.). Additionally, we evaluated viability of the proposed flight procedures by conducting a number of demonstrations with use of flight simulation.

A Study on the Phase Prediction of Oemga Radio Wave (오메가전파의 위상예측에 관한 연구)

  • The aspects of Omega phase prediction are briefly reviewed, and Swanson's Model and Pierce's Model are presented. The equations for the Omega phase prediction and the most probable coefficients of the propagating equations are derived on the base of Pierce's Model by the least square method. The coefficients are calculated from the data which are the phase differences between the pairs of the Station A (Aldra, Norway), C(Haiku, Hawaii), and D(La Mour, North Dakota) observed at Busan Harbor of the South Coast of Korea in June and September, 1976. It is clearly shown that the standard deviations of the observed lane values at Busan Harbor are as followed: 1. June, 1976. Pair (A-C) : 0.1446 Pair (C-D) : 0.2598 2.September, 1976. Pair (A-D) : 0.3958 Pafr (C-D) : 0.3278 As a conclusion of the above investigation, it is shown that the Omega phase velocity can be predicted by the method, proposed in this paper, of analyzing the diurnal and seasonal variations of the Omege phase velocity except SID, PCD and AZD. If more observed data are employed, more exact Omega phase velocity is expected to be obtained.

An Analysis of the Somatotype of Elderly Women (노인여성의 측면체형 분석)

  • through Sid View Silhouette The purpose of this study was to pro-vide basic information for elderly women's clothing construction and to develop dress forms that can reflect the charac-teristics of their bodies. The subjects were 251 elderly women aged from 60 to 81. Data were collected from 34 photographic measurements of each subject and analyzed by factor analysis cluster analysis analysis of variance. The results were as follows: 1. A decrease in height the bustline drops as age increase. From a lateral view point most of the subjects have straight posture with protruding ab-domens but the somatotype gradually bends bends forward with age. 2) Five factors were extracted from photometric measurement which explain 81.0% of variance. 3 Through cluster analysis using 5 fac-tor scores four types were categorized. Type I was turning over somatotype Type II was swayback somatotype Type III was straight somatotype Type IV was bending somatotype according to its po-sition to the relative plumb liner and their side view contour.

  • The TFTs have been fabricated with 3 different geometry SID electrodes which have the same channel W/L ratio (W/L = 5) due to constant channel resistance, The 3 samples have different channel widths (350, 150, and $25\;{\mu}m$) and channel lengths (70, 30, and $5\;{\mu}m$) by fixed channel W/L ratio simultaneously on one chip for reliable comparisons. Resultant on-current and field effect mobility are proportional to the channel width, while the subthreshold swing is inversely proportional to the channel width mainly due to the change of contact resistance. These results show that the contact resistance strongly affects the device performances and should be considered in the applications.

Characteristics of Image Sticking Observed During Background Display in AC-PDP (AC PDP의 배경광 잔상특성)

  • In darkroom condition, it was observed that a white picture pattern lasted several minutes leaves a recognizable trace in subsequent black background picture. Although this is not a serious problem for the most current public display or home TV applications, the image sticking should be minimized for future high quality multimedia display applications. In order to characterize this picture memory effect having relatively long time scale, spatially resolved luminance measurement and light waveform measurement have been performed. Pixels located at the outer boundary of white pattern previously displayed shows highest luminance. These cells also shows fastest ignition at the ramp up reset sequence. The luminance and ignition voltage differences between boundary cells and the other cells are increased with display duration and number of sustain-pulse. It is speculated that image sticking observed at the boundary cell is originated from the transport of charged particles and re-deposition of reactive species such as Mg, O provided from strong sustain discharge region.
