(Ti.Si)C composite powders were synthesized by SHS method using microwave energy. Compositional and structural characterization of the powder were carried out by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The average particle size of the synthesized (Ti.Si)C composite powders was smaller than that of the starting materials. From the results of the temperature profile, combustion temperature and velocity were decreased with increasing Si molar ratio. With increasing C molar ratio combustion temperature and velocity did not change. (Ti.Si)C composite was sintered at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min by using hot-pressing with 30 MPa. The best properties were obtained from the sintered specimen whose composition was 1 : 1 : 1.9 molar ratio of Ti : Si : C. The sintering density, flexural strength and vickers hardness of the sintered body were 4.71 g/㎤, 423 MPa and 21 GPa, respectively.
Fe-aluminides have the potential to replace many types of stainless steels that are currently used in structural applications. Once commercialized, it is expected that they will be twice as strong as stainless steels with higher corrosion resistance at high temperatures, while their average production cost will be approximately 10% of that of stainless steels. Self-propagating, high-temperature Synthesis (SHS) has been used to produce intermetallic and ceramic compounds from reactions between elemental constituents. The driving force for the SHS is the high thermodynamic stability during the formation of the intermetallic compound. Therefore, the advantages of the SHS method include a higher purity of the products, low energy requirements and the relative simplicity of the process. In this work, a Fe-aluminide intermetallic compound was formed from high-purity elemental Fe and Al foils via a SHS reaction in a hot press. The formation of iron aluminides at the interface between the Fe and Al foil was observed to be controlled by the temperature, pressure and heating rate. Particularly, the heating rate plays the most important role in the formation of the intermetallic compound during the SHS reaction. According to a DSC analysis, a SHS reaction appeared at two different temperatures below and above the metaling point of Al. It was also observed that the SHS reaction temperatures increased as the heating rate increased. A fully dense, well-bonded intermetallic composite sheet with a thickness of $700\;{\mu}m$ was formed by a heat treatment at $665^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours after a SHS reaction of alternatively layered 10 Fe and 9 Al foils. The phases and microstructures of the intermetallic composite sheets were confirmed by EPMA and XRD analyses.
Steel frames are widely used in steel structures. Exiting steel structures may be needed to strengthen for various reasons. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) is one of the materials that are used to strengthen steel structures. Most studies on strengthening steel structures have been done on beams and steel columns. No independent study, to the researcher's knowledge, has studied the effect of CFRP strengthening on steel frames. This study explored the use of CFRP composite on retrofitting square hollow section (SHS) steel frames, using numerical investigations. Ten Finite Element (FE) models, which were strengthened with CFRP sheets, were analyzed under different coverage length, number of layers, and location of CFRP composite. One FE model without strengthening was analyzed as a control FE model to determine the increase of the ultimate load in the strengthened steel frames. ANSYS software was used to analyze the SHS steel frames. The results showed that the coverage length and the number of layers of CFRP composite have a significant effect on increasing the ultimate load of the SHS steel frames. The results also showed that the location of CFRP composite had no similar effect on increasing the ultimate load and the amount of mid span deflection of the SHS steel frames.
The surgical hand scrub (SHS) is the single most important procedure in the prevention of post-operative wound infections and yet it remains the most violated of all infection control procedures. The purpose of this study was to gain an overview of SHS habits in operative th atre personnel and to determine knowledge and attitudes to identify whether there is a need for improvement. The subjects for this study included 79 doctors and 94 nurses working in the operative th atres of four hospitals in Incheon City and Kyungki Province. Related data were collected from July 25 to August 10, 1995 by the author. The data were analyzed using descriptive stat-istics and Chi-squre test. The results of the study are summarized as follows : 1. Nurses felt that they conducted SHS for a longer period of time than doctors did(X=20.1, P=.005). 2. Nurses and doctors had some knowledge of slip-ping rings off fingers and the length of nails, but they lacked knowledge on the duration of SHS, handwashing after an operation and on manicure. 3. There were many reasons given for insufficient SHS included : 1) because they were so busy (38%). 2) brushes were too harsh(19.7%). 3) operations were very simple(18.7%). 4) surgical latex gloves provide functional barrier(11.6%). 5) SHSs were troublesome(7.4%) 6) there were no clocks near the sinks(2.5%) and 7) the operative patients were administered antibiotics after operartion(2.1%). 4. Most of nurses and doctors considered SHS to be important in prevention against post operative infections. 5. Nurses were found to do a thorough SHS, but residents were found to neglect SHS. 6. Considering prevention against postoperative infections, most nurses and doctors considered aseptic techniques, environment-sanitary management and SHS more important than the use of antibiotics, the resistance of patients or the method of operation. 7. Half of the nurses and doctors(54.3%) considered surgical latex gloves to function well as a barrier. 8. Half of the nurses (56.4%) and doctors(51.9%) learned SHS as part of the curriculum in their school education and the rest(nurses : 95.7%, doctors : 74.7%) learned SHS as part of their In Service Education. In conclusion, these findings suggest a need to develop an educational program on surgical hand scrub and hospital infection control for surgical personnels, to install clocks near the hand scrub sinks, to consider a violation report for negligent surgical hand scrubs, and to develop a soft brush for hand scrubs in order to increase performance of the surgical hand scrub.
This paper presents a numerical study on the behavior of continuous hollow steel beam strengthened using carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). Most previous studies on the CFRP strengthening of steel beams have been carried out on the steel beams with simple boundary conditions. No independent study, to the researcher's knowledge, has studied on the CFRP strengthening of square hollow section (SHS) continuous steel beam. However, this study explored the effect of the use of adhesively bonded CFRP flexible sheets on the behavior of the continuous SHS steel beams. Finite Element Method (FEM) has been employed for modeling. Eleven specimens, ten of which were strengthened using CFRP sheets, were analyzed under different coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composite. ANSYS software was used to analyze the SHS steel beams. The results showed that the coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composite are effective in increasing the ultimate load capacity of the continuous SHS steel beams. Application of CFRP composite also caused the ductility increase some strengthened specimens.
High reaction heat evolved from the oxidation of Al was used to synthesize SiC, which might be difficult to be formed by SHS. Al2O3-SiC composite powder was easily manufactured using KNO3 as an ignition and reaction catalyst. Unreacted Si and C were observed after reaction dependent upon the composition of starting powders, reaction atmosphere and relative densities of compacted bodies. The unreacted carbon could be removed by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and the remaining Si could be removed by dissolving in NaOH solution. The final powder particles were smaller than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size.
Ultra-fine $\beta$-SiC powders were fabricated by self-propagating high temperature synthesis process (SHS) using microwave oven. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of hot pressed sample at 200$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min using synthesized SiC powders, which had 2 wt% of Al2O3 and 2.5 wt% of B4C content, showed 438 MPa, 4.15MPa.m1/2 and 28 GPa, respectively. The highest strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of composites containing 4wt% of Al2O3, which had highest relative density of 99.9%, showed 458 MPa, 4.6MPa.m1/2 and 36.2 GPa, respectively.
A reduction/oxidation reaction between A1 metal powder and SiO2 powder was performed by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) reaction induced by microwave energy to produce a composite of Al2O3 and Si powders by using a 2.45 GHz kitchen model microwave oven. A Microwave Hybrid Heating(MHH) method was applied by using SiC powders as a suscepting material to raise the temperature of the disk samples and the heat increase rate of over 100℃/min were obtained before the reaction. The reaction started around 850℃ and the heat increase rate jumped to over 200℃/min after the reaction took place.
