In designing the autotransformer type superconducting fault-current limiter (SFCL), one must consider that the iron core can be saturated for the SFCL to have effective fault-current limiting operation. In this paper, to examine the saturation of the iron core comprising SFCL during the fault period, the linkage flux and the magnetizing current of the SFCL were derived from the electrical equivalent circuit with the nonlinear exciting branch. By analysis on the linkage flux versus the magnetizing current of the autotransformer type SFCL, calculated from the short-circuit tests, the design condition for the suppression of the iron core's saturation was discussed.

The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) can quickly limit the fault current shortly after the short circuit occurs and recover the superconducting state after the fault removes and plays a role in compensating the voltage sag of the sound feeder adjacent to the fault feeder as well as the fault current limiting operation of the fault feeder. Especially, the flux-lock type SFCL with an isolated transformer, which consists of two parallel connected coils on an iron core and the isolated transformer connected in series with one of two coils, has different voltage sag compensating and current limiting characteristics due to the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The current limiting and the voltage sag compensating characteristics of a SFCL using a transformer winding were analyzed. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests results considering the winding direction of two coils, the SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding has shown the higher limited fault current than the SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding. It could be confirmed that the higher fault current limitation of the SFCL could be contributed to the higher load voltage sag compensation.

In this paper, a transformer type SFCL (superconducting fault current limiter) using an additional magnetically coupled circuit was suggested. Its transient fault current limiting characteristics, due to the winding direction of additional coupled circuit, were analyzed through fault current limiting tests. The suggested transformer type SFCL was composed of the primary winding, and one secondary winding wound on the same iron core together with an additional magnetically coupled circuit. That circuit consists of the other secondary winding together with the other SC (superconducting) element connected in parallel with its other secondary winding. As one of the effective design parameters to affect the transient fault current of the SFCL, the fault current limiting tests of the suggested SFCL were carried out considering the winding direction of its additional coupled circuit. It was confirmed that, through the analysis on the fault current tests of the SFCL, the quench sequence of two SC elements comprising the suggested SFCL could be adjusted by the winding direction of the additional coupled circuit.

In this paper, the protection coordination of the protection devices such as the over-current relay (OCR) and recloser (R/C) with superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was investigated in a KEPCO grid. The operation time and protection coordination of the protection devices were changed by the SFCL. Through the analysis for protection coordination between the SFCL and the protection devices in the KEPCO grid, the operation time was observed to depend on the impedance of the SFCL.

Superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is expected to be introduced into electric power system in future as an effective countermeasure for the increase of the short-circuit current due to the growth of the electric power system. SFCL has a merit that the fault current can be limited by the resistance generated when a superconductor transits from a superconducting state to a normal state without additional detecting device. In this paper, we investigated the resistance variance of resistive type SFCL and the fault current limiting characteristics due to the amplitude of source voltage. We could obtain the more effective fault current limiting characteristics of SFCL as the source voltage increased.

Recently fault currents are increasing in a network. It is caused by increase in electric demand and high penetration of distributed generation with renewable energy sources. Moreover, distribution network has become more and more complex as mesh network to improve the distribution system reliability and increase the flexibility and agility of network operation. Accordingly, the fault current will exceed capacity of circuit breakers soon and all the various rational solutions to solve this problem are taken into account. Under these circumstances, superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is a new alternative in the viewpoint of technical and economic aspects. This study presents operation processes for a resistive-type of SFCL, and it proposes reliability model for the SFCL. When a SFCL is installed into a network, the contribution of decreased fault currents to failure for distribution equipments can be quantified. As a result, it is expected that a SFCL makes the reliability of adjacent equipments on existing network improve and these changes are analyzed. We propose a methodology to evaluate the reliability in the distribution network where a SFCL is installed considering a reliability model for resistive-type of SFCL and reliability changes for adjacent equipments which are proposed in this paper.

To apply the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) into a power system, the analysis for its recovery characteristics as well as the consideration for its cooperation with other protecting machine such as a circuit breaker is required. The recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL like its current limiting characteristics are dependent on the winding direction of two coils. In this paper, the experiments of the current limiting and the recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL with YBCO thin film were performed. From the analysis on the experimental results due to the winding direction of two coils, the limited fault current in case of the additive polarity winding was observed to be lower than that for the case of the subtractive polarity winding. In addition, the recovery time was found to be faster in case of the additive polarity winding compared to the subtractive polarity winding.

The flux-coupling type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the YBCO coated conductor. The primary and secondary coils in the transformer were wound in series each other through an iron core and the YBCO coated conductor was connected with secondary coil in parallel. In a normal condition, the flux generated from a primary coil is cancelled out by its structure and the zero resistance of the YBCO thin films. When a fault occurs, the resistance of the YBCO coated conductor was generated and the fault current was limited by the SFCL. In this paper, we investigated the fault current limiting characteristics according to turn ratio in the flux-coupling type SFCL. The experiment results that the fault current limiting characteristics was improved according to turn ratio.

Power systems are becoming larger and larger for meeting electric power demand. Therefore, the over-currents resulting from contingencies such short circuits are increasing higher. The Maximum short circuit current of modern power system is becoming so large that circuit breaker are not expected th be able to shut down the current in the future. In order to cut over-currents, a system composed of a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) and traditional breaker seems to provide a promising solution for future power operation. In present paper, three line-to-ground fault is assumed to happen at the center of 345kV transmission lines in a large capacity electric power system The superconducting fault current limiter was represented using a commutation type, which consists of a non-inductive superconducting coil and current limiting element(resistor or reactor). The introduction merits of the SFCL were investigated quantitatively by RTDS/EMTDC from the viewpoint of current limiting performance, the prevention of the voltage drop at the load bus and comparison characteristics for two type SFCL. Desired design specification and operation parameters of SFCL were also given qualitatively by the performance evaluation of the two type SFCL in the power system.

In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics for the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) using magnetic coupling between two coils were investigated. The SFCL consists of a high-$T_c$ superconducting(HTSC) element and two coils. This SFCL has different characteristics that depend on the connection form, the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The impedance and the operational current of the SFCL can be adjusted higher or lower than the resistance and the critical current of HTSC element. Therefore, the SFCL can change the amplitude of the limited fault current. To confirm it, the HTSC element was modeled and the fault current limiting characteristics of the SFCL were analysed through computer simulation. It was obtained from the analysis that the connection form and the winding direction of two coils of the SFCL were the important design parameters.
