Objectives: This study is to identify the effect of sex education by school doctor of Korean medicine on elementary school students from fourth to sixth-grade. Methods: Eighty three students who received four sex eduction lectures by school doctor of Korean medicine were assigned as experimental group while 132 students who did not receive any sex education were assigned as control group. This study observed the changes in students’ sexual knowledge and sexual attitude before, after and three months after the sex education program. Results: Experimental group showed positive changes on sexual knowledge (male p=0.000, female p=0.046) and sexual attitude (male⋅female p=0.000). Three months after the conclusion of sex education program, the follow-up evaluation showed decline in effect of education, which suggests a need for continuous sex education. As students showed high level of satisfaction, we expect school doctor of Korean medicine can improve knowledge on health and further increase familiarity in Korean medicine by this kind of sex education Conclusions: Sex education by school doctor of Korean medicine for elementary school students from fourth to sixth grade has effectively changed sexual knowledge and attitude. Further, it is necessary to research the effect of sex education on elementary students over long-term period.
Background: Dioecious plant species having both male and female plants have been investigated regarding sex-related characteristics such as sex ratio, sex-differential resource requirements, and spatial segregation of the sexes. Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to the survival of plant populations, but dioecious species are particularly more prone to such habitat degradation than non-dioecious species because of their dimorphic sexual system. We examined the sex-related demographics of two Ilex cornuta populations being different regarding land use history. Methods: During 2016-2017, we examined I. cornuta trees with a basal diameter ${\geq}1.5cm$ in the Yongsu-ri population (YS population) and the Gotjawal Provincial Park population (GP population). Plant sex (male, female, or unsexed) was identified. The tree size (basal diameter and height of the main stem), clonal production (the ramet numbers per genet), and vitality for each clone were measured. The associations between population, sex, tree size, clonal production, and vitality were examined using ANOVAs and contingency table analyses. Finally, point pattern analyses using O-ring statistics were conducted to assess spatial patterns. Results: Upon excluding unsexed trees, the YS population with 74 trees was significantly male-biased (0.66), while the GP population with only 26 trees had a 1:1 sex ratio. In both populations, males and females did not differ in tree size. Although the mean number of ramets differed significantly between populations, females tended to produce more ramets than males. The proportion of weak trees was significantly higher in the YS than in the GP population. Neither population showed evidence of spatial segregation of the sexes. Conclusions: The two populations of dioecious I. cornuta are characterized by the small number of trees and relatively high frequencies of non-reproductive trees. Both indicate that these populations are quite susceptible to environmental and genetic stochasticity. On the other hand, the differences between populations in sex ratio, clonal production, and vitality suggest that conservation efforts for I. cornuta need to be population-specific. In order to help recover and enable this vulnerable species to persist, it is necessary to find ways to enhance their sexual reproduction and simultaneously reduce habitat disturbances due to anthropogenic activities.

This is an exploratory study that examines the publication and use of sex education books for youth and considers their values and applicability to sex education for youth in the future. In-depth interviews were conducted with book editors, sex education experts, and public librarians-those who play important roles in children and young adults' reading of sex education books-and analyzed. According to the research participants, parents and caregivers often rely on sex education books when they find it hard to deliver sex education to their children on their own. Sex education books are also often used by sex education experts in their classes. The research participants said many sex education books that were published in South Korea only focus on 'the body education,' which deals with body changes during puberty. Gender inequality is another subject that needs to be changed. The research participants agreed that a sex education book should not just be a simple medium that delivers fragments of knowledge on sexuality but a broader learning playground where children and young adults can learn independent perspectives on sexuality based on comprehensive views on life. This study suggests a guideline for sexuality education books, which will be useful for library collection development.
Silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) is among the most economically important freshwater fish species in Thailand. It ranks fourth in economic value and third in production weight for fisheries and culture in Thailand. An XX/XY sex-determination system based on gynogenesis was previously reported for this fish. In this study, the molecular basis underlying the sex-determination system was further investigated. Genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data were generated for 32 captive-bred silver barb individuals, previously scored by phenotypic sex, to identify sex-linked regions associated with sex determination. Sixty-three male-linked loci, indicating putative XY chromosomes, were identified. Male-specific loci were not observed, which indicates that the putative Y chromosome is young and the sex determination region is cryptic. A homology search revealed that most male-linked loci were homologous to the Mariner/Tc1 and Gypsy transposable elements and are probably the remnants of an initial accumulation of repeats on the Y chromosome from the early stages of sex chromosome differentiation. This research provides convincing insights into the mechanism of sex determination and reveals the potential sex determination regions in silver barb. The study provides the basic data necessary for increasing the commercial value of silver barbs through genetic improvements.

Purpose: A phenomenology study was conducted to provide in-depth data to help in the understanding of young women who have become unmarried mothers. Method: In-depth interviews were done with 11 unmarried mothers from August 2002 to September 2003 Data were recorded and analyzed by Colaizzi method. Result: Significant statements consisted of 5 categories with 12 theme clusters accompanying each category. The categories were: "Sex as a tool" which included living and connections, "Sex as an expression of her desire" which included wanting and expression of love, "Sex to be dominated" which included significance, domination and negative aspects of sex, "Moral sex" which included secrecy, responsibility and connections with life, "Sex as a sense of identity" which included expression of gender and association with peer group. Conclusion: The results of this study will help indicate directions for care of unmarried mother, which should be based on a deep understanding of their personal perception of sexuality. Also, it can be utilized as basic materials for development of sex educational programs to prevent repeat pregnancies in unmarried women and information on consultion with unmarried mothers.
The objective of present study was to ascertain sex determination for individual identification, parentage control, and sex chromosome anomalies in horse. PCR amplification products of the equine sex determining region of the Y chromosome gene (SRY) and amelogenin gene (AMEL) were detected by using agarose gel electrophoresis. A normal sire and foal II showed 1 SRY band (430 bp) and 3 AMEL (AMELX, AMELY, and AMELX/Y) band, 175 bp, 160 bp, 190 bp, respectively, and a normal dam and foal I showed a single AMELX band (175 bp). These results enables a quick diagnosis for sex determination prior to cytogenetic analysis.
The purpose of this study is two fold: 1) To find out if perceived parental child-rearing attitudes have any relationship with sex of children and education of the parents. 2) To investigate how and what extent perceived parental child-rearing attitudes affect the sex-role traits of children. In order to pursue the above purposes, the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and perceived parental child-rearing attitudes questionnaire were administerd to 127 6th elementary school children in Gwang Ju. For data analysis, such techniques as multiple regression and pearson correlation were applied. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) Both boys and girls perceived more positive attitudes by mothers than by fathers 2) Some effects of sex differences and education of parents were found in the perceived parental child-rearing attitudes and sex-role traits of children. 3) Perceived parental attitudes had significant effects on children's sex-role traits.
Experimental results obtained from research using only one sex are sometimes extrapolated to both sexes without thorough justification. However, this might cause enormous economic loss and unintended fatalities. Between years 1997 and 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration suspended ten prescription drugs producing severe adverse effects on the market. Eight of the ten drugs caused greater health risks in women. Serious male biases in basic, preclinical, and clinical research were the main reason for the problem. This mini-review will describe why and how funding organizations such as the European Commission, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the US National Institutes of Health have tried to influence researchers to integrate sex/gender not only in clinical research, but also in basic and preclinical research. Editorial policies of prominent journals for sex-specific reporting will also be introduced, and some considerations in integrating sex as a biological variable will be pointed out. To produce precise and reproducible results applicable for both men and women, sex should be considered as an important biological variable from basic and preclinical research.
