  • We received 73 wheat resources from CIMMYT for analysis of agricultural characteristics and qualities of them. We sowed 73 lines and 4 Korean varieties in fall and spring to compare differences of wheat traits between fall and spring seeding. The heading and maturity date of fall seeding lines has coming faster average 18 days than spring seeding lines. Fall seeding lines have more number of spike per $m^2$ and grain number of spike. Spike and awn length of spring seeding lines were shorter than fall seeding lines and stem length was variable to varieties in both condition. Protein contents of five of 73 lines, Jokyoung and Jopoom varieties decreased but the others increased. The sedimentation values of 34 lines include Jokyoung and falling number (F/N) of 44 lines include two varieties, Keumkang and Jokyoung, decreased but the others increased, respectively. Particle size was presented that most spring seeding lines were bigger. However, when it sowed in fall, the lightness (L) of wheat flour was lighter. Consequently, we confirmed when it was sowed in spring, agricultural traits and qualities of wheat got weak.

  • Experiments were conducted to effect of seeding rates and growth regulator (KIM-112) application on lodging resistance and yield in direct seeding on flooded paddy surface. The number of seedlings per $m^2$ were ranged from 61 to 143, and seedling ratios were from 71.7 to 76.1%. The culm length was increased with the higher seeding rates. The culm length was significantly shortened by KIM-112 application, and the shortened effect of internodes were various with application times. The leaf angles with the culm and top leaves were errected and position of light reception by KIM-112 application, also the weight of culm base was increased. The bending moment at breaking of culm and culm diameter were decreased according to the higher seeding rates. The number of panicles per $m^2$ were increased according to the higher seeding rates. The ripened grain rate and 1, 000 grains weight became higher than the untreated control.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the seeding date and performance of early maturing rye cultivars for the Dry matter yield (DMY) and nutritive value during 2016 and 2017 in Yeongseo region of Gangwondo, South Korea. The experimental field was designed as a split-plot arrangement. The treatments were two planting dates on September 25 and October 02 as the main plots, and two cultivars of forage rye including Gogu and Koolgrazer as sub-plots. The cultivars were harvested on April 26 at the heading stage of both years. In this experiment, the sowing dates and cultivars of the forage rye did not effect on DMY. The DMY had no significant differences among the cultivars of forage rye and seeding date of both years. Similarly, no significant difference was observed in the DMY of Gogu and Koolgrazer in both seeding date and years. The CP, NDF, ADF, and RFV had no significant differences among the cultivars of forage rye and seeding date of both years. Considering the DMY and nutritive value of the current experiment, seeding of forage rye cultivars Gogu and Koolgrazer on September 25 and October 2 could be used as an recommended seeding date at northern area. In addition, based on the climate characteristics of the region, both cultivars had relatively similar forage yield and quality that makes them to be recommended for cultivation in the region. This study is meaningful in that DMY was first presented in Yeongseo region where there is no cultivation data for forage rye.

  • The production area of Italian ryegrass feed is gradually increasing and labor-saving technologies are being developed. If sowing and fertilization are carried out agricultural drones, working hours and labor are reduced. The purpose of this study is to suggest an appropriate seedling amount for feed production by drone spreading of Italian ryegrass in spring. In addition, we would like to review the productivity of the drone seeding machine that is being developed by Rural Development Administration(RDA) of Korea. Italian ryegrass was sown by a drone in February at the NICS located in Gyehwa-hwa, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. In Experiment 1, 50kg/ha, 60, 70, and 80 seeding rates were sown with a horizontal spreader drone. In Experiment 2, uniform spreaders type drone and horizontal spreader type were sown with the same seeding amount and compared. The drone was sown using the AF-52 aircraft. The higher the seeding amount, the higher the emergence rate. As the seeding amount increased, the plant length increased, but the number of tillers per individual decreased. The dry matter weight of the feed was the highest at 1,326kg/10a at the seeding rate of 70kg/ha, and decreased by 20.5% at the seeding rate of 80kg/ha. The coverage ratio was the highest at 96 at the seeding rate of 70kg/ha, which was the most advantageous for spring sowing. In the comparative experiment according to the spreader type, the uniform spreader had a high emergence rate per unit area. When the uniform spreader was used, the dry matter weight of the feed was 17% higher than that of the horizontal one, and the coverage was about 5% higher.

  • The possible experimental time for cloud seeding was analyzed in South Korea. Rain gauge and radar precipitation data collected from September 2017 to August 2022 in from the three main target stations of cloud seeding experimentation (Daegwallyeong, Seoul, and Boryeong) were analyzed. In this study, the assumption that rainfall and cloud enhancement originating from the atmospheric updraft is a necessary condition for the cloud seeding experiment was applied. First, monthly and seasonal means of the precipitation duration and frequency were analyzed and cloud seeding experiments performed in the past were also reanalyzed. Results of analysis indicated that the experiments were possible during a monthly average of 7,025 minutes (117 times) in Daegwallyeong, 4,849 minutes (81 times) in Seoul, and 5,558 minutes (93 times) in Boryeong, if experimental limitations such as the insufficient availability of aircraft is not considered. The seasonal average results showed that the possible experimental time is the highest in summer at all three stations, which seems to be owing to the highest precipitable water in this period. Using the radar-converted precipitation data, the cloud seeding experiments were shown to be possible for 970-1,406 hours (11-16%) per year in these three regions in South Korea. This long possible experimental time suggests that longer duration, more than the previous period of 1 hour, cloud seeding experiments are available, and can contribute to achieving a large accumulated amount of enhanced rainfall.

  • Hairy vetch (vicia villosa Roth), leguminous green manure crop, can increase soil fertility and reduce chemical nitrogen application for cash crop such as spring corn. More yield of hairy vetch is needed at planting cash crop to obtain higher effect of green manure. Hairy vetch waa seeded on Sep.10, Oct.1, and Oct. 20 and at 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ha of seeding rate respectively, in 1996 and 1997, Dry matter and nitrogen yield of hairy vetch were measured on May 1 in 1997 and 1998. Proper seeding rate of hairy vetch was 30 kg/ha irrespective of years and seeding dates. Above-ground dry matters of hairy vetch on May 1 in 1997 and 1998 decreased according to delayed seeding, and those were 5.5-7, 4-4.5, 1.3-2.2 ton/ha on Sep. 10, Oct. 1 and Oct 20 of seeding date, respectively in seeding rate 30-40 kg/ha. Also nitrogen yield of hairy vetch on May 1 decreased according to delayed seeding, and those were 220-280, 160-180, 60-100kg/ha on Sep. 10, Oct. 1 and Oct 20 of seeding date, respectively in seeding rate 30-40kg/ha. Therefore, we suggest that hairy vetch has to be seeded earlier in autumn to obtain high green manure yield in spring. To determine the detailed optimum seeding time in autumn, hairy vetch was seeded on Aug. 20, Aug. 31, Sep. 10, Sep. 20, and Sep. 30 in 1999 and was harvested on April 22, April 27, and May 2 in 2000, respectively. Dry matter and nitrogen yield of hairy vetch by seeding in late August were higher than those by seeding in September indicating that dry matter of hairy vetch were 7-8, 6-7, 4-5, 2-3 ton/ha and nitrogen yield were 240-290, 200-260, 150-220, 70-120 kg/ha, respectively when seeded on Aug. 20, Aug. 31, Sep. 10, Sep. 20 and Sep. 30 and harvested on April 22-May 2. Increase of dry matter and N yield of hairy vetch by 10days delayed harvest was higher in late August seeding than in September seeding. So hairy vetch should be seeded in late August if possible to obtain much more green manure yield and be seeded until September because green manure yield decrease rapidly when seeded after October.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the seeding and harvesting dates on the growth characteristics, dry matter yield and quality of com for silage in alpine area(altitude 800m a.s.l.) of National Livestock Research Institute from 2001 to 2002. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Main plots consisted of three seeding dates, 10 May, 20 May and 30 May. Sub plots consisted of harvesting dates, 15 September, 25 September and 5 October. Tassel height of com was decreased with seeding dates, 30 May, 10 May and 20 May in order, and harvesting date of 5 October was apt to be high. Ear height of com was decreased with seeding dates, 20 May, 30 May, and 10 May in order, and harvesting date of 15 September was the lowest of all treatments. Ear rate of com was decreased with late seeding dates, and it was the highest with harvesting date of 5 October. Dry matter yield was decreased with late seeding dates(P<0.05), and it was increased with late harvesting regardless of seeding dates(P<0.05). Crude protein content of com stover was increased with late seeding dates, and that of com ear was the highest with seeding date of 20 May. And crude protein contents of com stover and ear were the highest with harvesting date of 15 September. NDF contents of com stover and ear were the highest with seeding date of 10 May and 20 May, respectively, and NDF content of com stover was the highest with seeding date of 10 May and there was no difference among treatments in NDF content of ear. ADF content of com stover was 42.1 to 42.6% regardless of seeding dates, and that of com ear was the highest with seeding date of 30 May. ADF content of com stover and ear was increased with early harvesting date excepting for harvesting date of 20 May. These results indicate that 20 May and 25 September would be the optimum seeding date and harvesting date, respectively, for dry matter yield and nutritive value of silage com in alpine area.

  • Understanding of the relationships between seeding rate and planting date is important for production of spring oats during the fall season. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to investigate seeding rate and planting date effects on forage performance and quality of spring oats(Avena sativa L.) at Suweon in 1997. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of different seeding rates such as 150, 200, and 250kg/ha. The subplots consisted of different planting dates of spring oats such as 15, 22, and 29 August and 5 September. Dry matter content of oats was significantly decreased(P<0.01) as the planting date was delayed except the planting date of 5 September(24.8%). Dry matter content of forage oats planted on 15, 22, and 29 August was 23.0, 21.5, and 20.5%, respectively. A seeding $rate\;{\times}\;planting$ date interaction for dry matter content was highly significant(P<0.01). Crude protein content of oats was significantly increased(P<0.01) from 15.6 to 27.9% as the planting was delayed, while a significant seeding $rate\;{\times}\;planting$ date interaction for crude protein content of oats was observed. Acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) contents of oats increased with early planting(P<0.01), but there was no significant difference among the seeding rates. ln vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) of oats was significantly increased(P<0.01) as the seeding rate was increased together with late planting. Average dry matter yield of oats decreased(P<0.01) from 2,647 to 615kg/ha as the planting was delayed, but there was no significant difference among the seeding rates. A seeding $rate\;{\times}\;planting$ date interaction was observed for average dry matter yield of oats that the seeding rate increase in this experiment showed better at early planting dates. Crude protein yield of oats increased from 171 to 410kg/ha as the planting was delayed, and a significant increases(P<0.01) for crude protein yield was found among the seeding rates. ln vitro digestible dry matter(IVDDM) yield of oats decreased(P<0.01) as the planting was delayed, but there was no significant difference among the seeding rates. A significant seeding $rate\;{\times}\;planting$ date interaction for lVDDM of oats was found. The results of this study indicate that both the seeding rate of 200kg/ha and early planting before 29 August would be recommendable for forage yield and quality of oats in Korea.
