  • The community structure of benthic meiofauna was investigated from seasonal surveys at seventeen stations off the Saemangeum area, in 2007. Ten meiofaunal taxa were identified. Nematodes were the dominant faunal group in all seasons and harpacticoids were dominant only at a few stations. The mean density of meiofauna was 383 indiv. $10cm^{-2}$, highest in May and November (434 indiv. $10cm^{-2}$), lowest in February (284 indiv. $10cm^{-2}$). Meiofaunal mean biomass was $80.49{\mu}gC{\cdot}10cm^{-2}$, highest in November ($99.54{\mu}gC{\cdot}10cm^{-2}$), lowest in February ($51.56{\mu}gC{\cdot}10cm^{-2}$). Cluster analysis revealed that the study area was composed of three benthic meiofaunal communities. There were significant correlations between major meiofaunal groups and sediment composition and the concentrations of heavy metals. The abundance of harpacticoids are positively correlated with silt (0.559, p < 0.01) and clay (0.340, p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with sand (-0.548, p < 0.01). Harpacticoids also showed positive correlations with heavy metals. The community structure of meiofauna in the study area varied seasonally in response to the change of sediment composition.

  • Due to both global warming and constructions of seadike/seawalls, continuously or abruptly rising tendencies of extreme high water levels have been detected at Kunsan and Mokpo harbors. This paper deals firstly with the separation of each effect, namely global warming effect and construction effect, on increases of water level quantitatively by a linear regression method. And then, it can be explained why and how the extreme high water levels had been risen just after constructions at both harbors. A numerical simulation of $M_2$ tidal constituent at Mokpo coastal zone shows that the tidal amplification by constructions is mainly due to the extinguishment of TCE at Mokpogu. The tidal flat effect makes the amplification more deepen at spring tide or extreme high tide, which results in the increase of inundation risk at Mokpo harbor. A frequency analysis method is applied, which is shown to be effective at such a site of having non-homogeneous tidal data due to constructions as Mokpo harbor.

  • Abstract [] The prediction of changes in the tidal regime due to the sea dike closure in the Saemankum area was performed using the nonlinear finite element model, TIDE. Based upon an overall comparison of calibrated model results with available field data, the TIDE model behaves well and is good representation of the hydrodynamic of the Saemankum tidal project area. It is shown that the TIDE model does an excellent job of computing the changes of tidal characteristics resulting in sea dike closure in an estuary area.

  • The FIT(fully implicit tidal) model which adopts PCGCS (preconditioned conjugate gradient squared) method is developed and is applied to near Mokpo Harbor. Comparing computational results with observed velocities and elevations for the M$_2$ tidal constituent, agreeable correspondence is detected. The validity of the model is also proven by applying it to such areas which have narrow width (therefore showing rapid velocity), irregular topography and complex geometry. Tidal amplification phenomenon according to the constructions of seadike and sea-walls is considered by analyzing the 'filter effect' of Mokpo-ku using the model.

  • The estimation of soil stabilization is of great importance concerning the construction of structures on weak soil. A typical model of soil stabilization is considered as replacement, which is based on ground at failure due to direct loading on weak soil. The calculation of the line of predicting settlement was carried out using RPL and DIKE programs. The DIKE program is showing a tendency to excel totally about this embankment of the seadike. Hereafter, This program will be contributed widely to the construction of offshore structures on weak soil.

  • Boryeong Seadike located at southwestern seashore of Korean peninsula completed in 1997. Sluice gate operation can be an important factor to maintain lake water quality and reduce retaining time of pollutants within lake. The lake water quality simulation model, WASPS was adopted and tested to find out proper gate operation timing and discharge amount. From the simulation of sluice gate operation, the results showed that the later the time of discharge for loosing 1 day successively to 6 days, the better the quality of water. Discharge amount showed relatively minor changes of water quality. This means that pollutants flowed into lake from watershed do not have enough time to mix up with deep water when the gate opened at early time. About 3 days delay of discharge caused the dilution effect to stabilize the lake water quality in case of Boryeong freshwater lake.

  • This study was designed to find out whether the water quality of Lake Daeho would be suitable for Sgricultural purposes during 1984-1988 perird. Thr results were as follows ; 1. There was an apparent seasonal temperature fluctuation$(6-25^{\circ}C)$ above the entrance of the culvert at the depth of 14m, but the temperature below remained constant at $11,9^{\circ}C$. 2. The yearly water qualities observed at the deepest site by the seadike were 7.4-7.5 pH, 16,800-1,472 ${\mu}mhos/cm$ EC, 9.2-10.8ppm DO, 1.3-2.5ppm DOD, 2.4-5.3ppm COD, 0.22-2.29ppm T-N, 0.01-0.10ppm T-P. 3. The average values of water qualities at the epilimnion in 1988 were 7.6 pH, 1,745umhos/cm EC, 10.8ppm DO, 1.8ppm DOD, 2.4ppm COD, 0.52ppm T-N, 0.05ppm T-P. 4. The salinity of the epilimnion at a 6m depth was 29,000ppm before the final closure of the seadike. It was 11,000 ppm in March 1984, 4,300ppm in March 1985, 2,000ppm in March 1986 and 1987, and 900ppm in March 1988. The salinity of the whole water column decreased from 29.000ppm to 1,200 ppm in March 1988. The average salinity above and below the culvert in 1987 was about 1,300ppm, and 30,000ppm respectively reaching that of seawater. 5. The highest salinity was observed at the epilimnion by the seadike, showing about 5,835ppm in 1984. 6. The seasonal salinity fluctuation was 2,000ppm in May, 800ppm in October, and 485ppm in September 1987. 7. The halocline was observed at the depth of 14m where the entrance of the culvert was located. Therefore, the epilimnion water is suitable for agricultural purposes, and the intake of water from Lake Sapkyo seems to be unnecessary.

  • A series of laboratory tests was carried out fur analyzing of seepage characteristics of two-layers embankment model which consists of gravel and earth fill layers. Gravel layers were built under the earth fill for a half and one-third width of earth fill of the model. Permeability of earth fill was ranged between $5.00\times10^{-5}\~3.00\times10^{-4}\;m/s$.. The tests were performed with hydraulic gradients(i), $0.10\~0.55$. From the test results, hydraulic head of earth fill with gravel layer was 1.6 times higher than that of earth fill without gravel layer. Seepage rate was increased up to $4\~22$ times and safety factor for piping was decreased to $13\~43\;\%$ comparing the earth fill with gravel layer to that without gravel layer. The gravel layer under the earth fill could, in general, give some serious seepage problems to seadike embankment.
