A Study on Improvement of Method for Measuring the Shield Performance of Shielding Enclosures (전자파 차폐실의 차폐효과 측정방법 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The shielding enclosure is very essential device to test the electromagnetic wave power generated by various RF equipments. Some standards for the shielding enclosures were established to test them in right method. Generally, There are IEEE-STD-299 and MIL-STD-285 and NSA-65-6 of the method for measuring the effectiveness of shielding enclosures, the IEEE-STD-299 combined MIL-STD-285 and NSA-65-6 about the method for measuring shielding effectiveness(SE) about 1969 years, but, the measurement point of 299 proposal is many points(including shielding wall, seam, coner beat, shielding door, etc) and demand long time of measurement. To improve SE test method for shielding enclosures was studied and suggested to develop a proper test procedure. First, we measure reference level as frequency range and H/V polarization, secondly, measure leakage point, and finally, measure shield effect and calculate SE. Our method has a merit of the less measurement point than IEEE-STD-299, and shorten time than 299, and define representation SE of shielding enclosure effectively.

Effects of Cr and Al Sputtered sheet for the Electromagnetic Shielding (전자차폐(電磁遮蔽)를 위한 크롬 및 알루미늄 스퍼터링의 효과)

  • In this paper, shielding effectiveness(SE) of the shielding material of electromagnetic(EM) waves was investigated with actual experiments. The materials used in this study were made up of sputtering, film and powder of conductive materials - Cr, Al, Ag and Cu etc. Also, the polyester film was used as a base material. The experiment was carried out by using a shielding evaluator(Shielding box) TR17302 with an ADVANTEST spectrum analyzer, model R3361C. It was found from the experimental results that silver, copper, aluminum and chromium were good candidates as a shielding material against the EM waves with increasing the SE as the composite was laminated. The characteristics of the SE against the EM waves depended on a mode of preparation of specimen. The effects of density of particles on the SE were studied when the sputtering. The SE strongly depended on the electric resistance by density of sputtering and painting particles. SE increased as the density of particles was increasing.

  • By using commercial available electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding fabrics, EMI shielding effectiveness(SE) and the physical properties were investigated. Thirteen specimens were chosen six fabrics were non-electrolytic plated with Cu, six plated with Cu+Ni and one plated with Ni, SE was measured by RF Impedance Analyzer HP4291A(Hewlett Co, Ltd)at the frequency of 100MHz-1.8GHz. The results showed that the commercial EMI shielding fabrics provided SE values over 30dB at the frequency of 100MHz-1.8GHz. Fabrics plated with Cu showed more effective shielding than those plated with Ni. The thickness of coating and fabric count were also influential factors on SE. Tensile properties were acceptable for lining fabrics but water vapor transport properties indicated that the better treatment condition were suggested to improve comfort properties.

  • In this paper, shielding effectiveness(SE) of the shielding paint of electromagnetic(EM) waves was investigated with actual experiments. The shielding paint used in this study were made of powder of conductive materials - Ag, Cu, Al, Sn, Ni. Cr, Graphite and Charcoal etc. with a solubility in oil and water. Also, the paper was used as a base sheet. The experiment was carried out by using a shielding evaluator(Shielding box) TR17302 with an ADVANTEST spectrum analyzer, model R3361C. It was found from the experimental results that silver, copper, nickel were good candidates as a shielding material against the EM waves with increasing the SE as the composite was laminated.   • In this paper, a new analytical formulation is presented for calculating shielding effectiveness (SE) of shielding enclosure including satellite electronic components and equipments. The shielding enclosure has a dielectric-backed aperture. The SE may be a function of frequency, dielectric constant, and position within the enclosure. And, the formulation has been extended for calculation of the SE of the structure where the one side of dielectric is partially backed by conductor. Our simulation results give that the dielectric material lowers the Q factor, and the further the observation point is from the aperture, the more SE increases.

  • This study investigated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of hybrid conductive fabrics. The coaxial transmission line method was used to measure the EMI Shielding effectiveness of the conductive fabrics. We designed and constructed a measuring system, consisting of a network analyzer and a device that serves as a sample holder and at the same time as a transmission medium of incident electromagnetic waves. The measurements of SE were carried out in a frequency range from 100 MHz to 2 GHz. The results of the EMI shielding experiments showed that the maximum electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) values of sandwich type C/A/C (carbon fiber sheet/aluminum foil tape/carbon fiber sheet) and C/Ni/C (carbon fiber sheet/magnetic shielding foil/carbon fiber sheet) samples were 55 dB and 113 dB, respectively, at a frequency of 1.9 GHz.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate fiber reinforced composite materials (FRCM) with electromagnetic shielding characteristics using aluminum (Al) film and copper (Cu) meshes. This study investigated the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of fiber reinforced composites filled with Al film, Cu meshes, and nano carbon black as hybrid conductive fillers to provide the electromagnetic shielding property of the fiber reinforced composites. The coaxial transmission line method of ASTM D 4935-89 was used to measure the EMI shielding effectiveness of composites in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 1.5 GHz. The variations of SE of FRCM with Al film, fine Cu, and general Cu meshes are described. The results indicate that the FRCM having Al film exhibited up to 75 dB of SE at 1.5 GHz.

  • It is important to study the shielding effectiveness(SE) of reinforcing material of plastic composite materials against the electromagnetic(EM) waves. In this paper, SE of the shielding material of EM waves was investigated with actual experiments. The experiment was carried out by using a shielding evaluator(Shielding box) TR17302 with an ADVANTEST spectrum analyzer, model R3361C. It was found from the experimental results that copper, aluminum and carbon fiber were good candidates as a shielding material against the EM waves with increasing the SE as the composite was laminated. The characteristics of the SE against the EM waves depended on a mode of preparation of specimen. The effects of interval of wires on the SE were studied when the orientation and the space of Cu wires were changed. The SE strongly depended on the. orientation and the space of the Cu wire. SE decreased as the space of the Cu wires was increasing.

  • Electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding effectiveness(SE) was investigated in of woven fabric made of epoxy/copper-nickel fabrics and nickel coated carbon fiber reinforced acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) composites. The coaxial transmission line method was used to measure the EMI shielding effectiveness of the composites. We designed and constructed a measuring system, consisting of a network analyzer and a device that plays the serves as a sample holder and at the same time as a transmission medium of the incident electromagnetic wave. The measurement of SE were carried out frequency range from 100MHz to 2GHz. It is observed that the SE of the composits is the frequency dependent increase with the increase in nickel coated carbon fibre volume fraction. The nickel coating with 20wt% ABS composite was shown to exhibit up to 60dB of SE. The result that nickel coated carbon fibre ABS composite can be used for the purpose of EMI shielding as well as for some microwave applications.

  • A new analytical method is presented for the shielding effectiveness(SE) of an enclosure with a dielectric-backed aperture. The previously proposed methods cannot consider the effect of the dielectric on the aperture. The comparisons among our method, previous method, and commercial programs give good correspondence. The method is used to calculate SE with varying permittivity and thickness of dielectric sheet, probe position, width and height of aperture.
