Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of a posture training program, including posture education and spinal exercise as implemented on the elementary school students with scoliosis. Method: The design of this study is nonequivalent sample control group pretest-posttest design. The study subjects were elementary school students attending 7 elementary schools located in G city in Gyungsangbuk-Do. Among them, those who had the Cobb angle between 4~10$^{\circ}$ in spine x-ray who agreed to participate in the study program were selected as the study subjects. The research instruments included the degree of spinal scoliosis(cobb angle), the level of knowledge on posture, and an evaluation following the posture training program. The data were collected from March 1, 2002 to July 30, 2002. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation, t-test, i test and Mann-Whitney U test were using SPSS WIN10.0 program. Result: The elementary school students with scoliosis who received the posture training program have a lower Cobb angle and higher level of knowledge of posture than the elementary school students with scoliosis who did not receive the posture training program. Conclusion: The posture training program was effective on the on Cobb angle and Knowledge of posture in the elementary school students with scoliosis in this study. Therefore, the program training program can be usefully utilized for the students with mild scoliosis in the field of school health.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is researching for possibility that Moire topography be applied in group school screening for scoliosis known school health problem, and find acceptable method of early detection and early treatment for scoliosis Methods : The authors practiced Moire topography for primary & middle school 1,895 students[male 976, female 919] in Jeonju, korea in 2001. After we distinguished students who had abnormal finding in Moire topography and then re-examined spinal X-ray analysis. The data was analysed and evaluated statistically Results : According to this research, the abnormal finding in Moire topography was 53.7% (1,018 students), and students needed X-ray re-examination were 11.2% (213 students). Students diagnosed scoliosis by X-ray re-examination were 1.8%. According to statistical analysis, interval between vertical base line of pelvis and vertical base line of neck, gap between left distance and right distance to the vertical base line of pelvis and difference of contour lines have strong correlations with deformity degree of the body surface examined by Moire. Conclusions : Following this research, throughout early detection for scoliosis by Moire topography could reduce exposure from scoliosis radiographs, and could detect trunk asymmetry that couldn't be found existing X-ray examination, so it made selecting students under observation who have bad posture possible.
Purpose: Scoliosis is a multifactorial disorder caused by genetic, biochemical, developmental, neuromuscular factors and causes complex deformities which include skeletal deformity, pain, cardiovascular dysfunction, motor function disorder. Until now, the treatment of scoliosis have been focused on orthopedic correction, preservation of cardiopulmonary and neurologic function. But recently, as aesthetic demands increases, the needs for the correction or improvement of the trunk and extremity contour does. So, the correction of soft tissue contour deformity can be a new concept for the treatment of scoliosis. Methods: We corrected a deformed contour with prefabricated silicone implant in a scoliosis patient who had been operated for orthopedic correction previously. Submuscular pocket was made under trapezius and latissimus dorsi muscle. Silicone implant was placed in the pocket and fixed to thoracolumbar fascia with sutures. Results: We had a satisfactory results for the correction of contour deformity. There was no significant complication. Conclusion: Silicone implant is a new trial for the correction of scoliosis contour deformity. This method is simple, safe and brings on satisfactory results.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to review on the need for early screening of scoliosis. Methods : We have researched and analyzed theories and literatures of scoliosis screening program. Result : The following results were obtained in this study. 1. Scoliosis screening should be carried out to improve middle and high school students's health and learning abilities. 2. The methods are the forward bending test, Moire test and X-Ray. 3. After the examination held by differentiating the degree of scoliosis, surgery or brace treatment for students should be carried out. 4. After the examination, appropriate acupuncture, exercise therapy and orthodontic treatment for students should be carried out. 5. Spinal health courses for young people should be held regularly to equip and encourage a healthy body and healthy mind and contribute to improve the learning efficiency. Conclusion : Scoliosis screening and early detection should be done in the Daejeon city middle school or high school students, and appropriate treatment should be performed as soon as possible.
Purpose : Purpose of this study was to determine correlation between Walter Reed Visual Analogue Scale (WRVAS) and Scoliosis Research Society-22(SRS-22) questionnaire for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods : For this study, to assess reliability, 224 middle school female students were applied the WRVAS & SRS-22 questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis was used to know correlationship between WRVAS and SRS-22 questionnaire. Regression analysis was used to know causation between WRVAS and SRS-22 questionnaire. Results Positive correlation(.248) was found between WRVAS score and SRS-22 score. And SRS-22 was shown positive correlation compared with WRVAS as a result slope of .078 Conclusion : The WRVAS questionnaire is reliable positive correlation with SRS-22 questionnaire. It is valid and may be useful for clinical evaluation of idiopathic scoliosis patients.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to inspect the effect of Massotherapy on idiopathic scoliosis patients, utilizing Cobb's angle to determine the degree of curvature progression in the thoracic and lumbar regions. Methods : To obtain this result, we examinated 30 case of parents who visit Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Oriental Medical Hospital. Taejon University. with idiopathic scoliosis. We observe their age, sex, symptoms and Cobb's angle. Results : As a result of this examination, we detected the fact that it's difficult to treat isiopathic scoliosis fundamentally. But, Their symptoms are improved. So it is necessary to treat scoliosis actively with massotherapy . Conclusion : We want to be put this knowledge to practical use on treating Scoliosis and think the study like this must be go on continuously.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the progression of Cobb's angle of middle school students according to the Risser grade changes during a one-year follow up period, and to identify the prevalence rate and related factors regarding scoliosis. Method: A total of 2,124 middle school students were preliminarily screened by the Adam's forward bending test. Among them, 21 adolescents diagnosed with scoliosis (above 5Cobb's angle) by X-Raying were the subjects and followed up for checking Cobb's angle and the Risser grade for one year. Results: The overall prevalence of scoliosis in middle school students was 2.13% and the prevalence in girls was higher than in boys. The Cobb's angle was significantly high in seniors and girls. The cases in low angle and low Risser grade demonstrated significant changes in progressive Cobb's angle compared to the cases in high angle and high Risser grade after one-year. But gender and pattern of curvature were not significantly different from the changes scoliosis angle after one-year. Conclusion: Based on these study results, juniors in low Risser grade were inclined to aggravate scoliosis despite the low degree of curvature at the first measurement.
Many methods have been described for the early intervention of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is lateral and rotational spinal curvature in absence of associated congenital or neurologic abnormalities, the most common type of scoliosis observed in child and young adults, and refers to curves that develop after the age of $10{\sim}18$. The curves of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis have the potential to progress rapidly during growth. Curves are currently universally measured by the Cobb's method and Ferguson method. Some curves do not remain small, these may be mildly or severely progressive and the ribs on the convex side of the curve separate, and those on the concave side ribs approximate so rib undergoes deformation with rib humping. The latter may make angles that can affect vestibular system, balance, sensory, especially cardipulmonary function. Intervention for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is based on the patient's age, the angular value of the curve, the maturity of their skeleton, and the topography. The purpose of intervention for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis consists of knowing how to go to the best approach the correction of the lateral curve and rotational deformity holding the achieved for the remainder of spinal growth, preventing significant cosmetic abnormality, pain and cardiopulmonary complication, control the muscle imbalance and proprioceptive postural disturbances, be less need for radical surgery to avoid early surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in pediatric Cobb's angle resulting from using the modified scoliosis exercise method to promote proprioception. Methods: There were 32 participants in this study. Cobb's angle was measured automatically using a ZeTTA PACS Viewer through a digital computer program with whole-body x-ray anterior to posterior. Scoliosis was diagnosed by a Cobb's angle of 10° or higher. Modified scoliosis exercises were used as the program for the three-stage method used in the study: the preparation phase (warm-up), actual exercise phase (main exercise), and final clean-up phase (cool-down). In this study, exercises that can promote proprioception, including muscle strengthening, stretching, equilibrium, myofascial release, balance taping, and traction, were applied, and their effects before and after treatment were compared. After implementing the exercise methods once a week-15 times total for about 4 months-the changes in Cobb's angle were measured. Results: After having the pediatric scoliosis patients practice the modified scoliosis exercises for four months, it was found that the Cobb's angle of the spine significantly decreased. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the modified pediatric scoliosis exercise, which is capable of promoting proprioception, is also effective in improving Cobb's angle.
This study is designed to evaluate the effect of HyunGa manual technique for the patient with scoliosis. After HyunGa manual technique the results of cobb's angle were improved significantly. It is suggested that HyunGa manual technique might be effective for the patiant with Scoliosis.
