Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a new renal biomarker for kidney function. It is almost exclusively eliminated by renal filtration. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the changes in serum ceatinine (CREA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and SDMA concentrations in dogs with chronic mitral valve insufficiency (CMVI), according to the severity of CMVI. The evaluation of the severity of CMVI was performed according to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) classification of heart failure. The dogs were classified into two groups: group 1 (ACVIM B; n = 11) and group 2 (ACVIM C; n = 15). In dogs with advanced CMVI, the serum SDMA concentrations were significantly increased above the normal reference range and were independent of body weight (BW), systolic blood pressure (SBP), or sex. No dog in either group had higher serum CREA concentrations than the upper limit. The serum SDMA concentration may be a better renal marker than serum CREA concentrations for the early diagnoses of renal dysfunction in dogs with CMVI.

This study was conducted to assess the biochemical nutritional status of 310 elderly(males: 130, females : 180) residing in Puchon City. Subjects were apparently healthy, home staying and aged over 60. Average height of males and females were 163.2cm and 148.5cm, respectively. Female aged over 80 showed 148.5cm, which was significantly lower than that of group aged 60~69. The rate of moderate obesity for males assessed with BMI($\geq$27) was 7.7%, and 23.4% for females. The hypertension rate assessed by SBP($\geq$160mmHg) was 8.0% and 10.5% for males and females, respectively. The proportion of hypertension with indice of DBP( 95mmHg) was 9.4% and 23.4%. The lower concentration of Hb(males: <13g/dl, females: <12g/dl) occurred in 10.7% for males and 11.7% for females. No one except a few was found with protein deficiency assessed with serum albumin, serum protein and the ratio of urinary nitrogen to creatinin. Twenty five percent of males and 35.2% of females belonged to hypercholesterolemia($\geq$ 240mg/dl). The proportion of elderly whose fasting blood sugar was higher than 140mg/dl was 23.7% and 23.2%.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to summarize current research trends and results regarding acupuncture treatment for hypertension. Methods: Articles published from 2009 to 2019 were searched on domestic databases (OASIS, NDSL, RISS) and PubMed using the keywords 'Hypertension', 'Hypertensive', 'Acupuncture', 'EA' (electroacupuncture), 'Autonomic nervous system', 'ANS', 'CVD' (cardiovascular disease), '고혈압', '침', '전침', and '자율신경계'. The studies were analyzed according to the year, type of study (domestic or foreign articles, nationality of the first author), acupuncture type for human and animal studies, BP (blood pressure) measurement, and acupuncture intervention. Results: In total, 21 articles were selected. There were 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 3 non-randomized controlled trials (nRCTs), 2 before-after studies, 1 case series, and 7 animal studies. Manual acupuncture (11 articles) was most frequently used, and ST36 (足三里) was most frequently used in human studies. In 18 of 21 articles, acupuncture was reported as effective in lowering systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in hypertensive patients. Conclusions: Acupuncture treatment for hypertension is deemed useful. Further studies are necessary for application of acupuncture therapy in clinical practice.
Objective: This study reports the effects of Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules as a treatment for transient hypertension. Methods: Four patients experienced sudden blood pressure elevation without a history of hypertension treatment. There was no specific history of disease, as confirmed by laboratory examination and image diagnosis. The patients were treated with Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules and their blood pressure analyzed over time. Results: After treatment with Huanglianjiedu-tang granules, the mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of all patients decreased significantly. Conclusions: The study suggests that Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules could be a primary treatment for hypertension. A well-designed study should be conducted for further evaluation of the effectiveness of the treatment.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate influences of drinking, smoking, and obesity indices on cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk factors in Korean young men. Methods: The subjects were 234 young men, aged 20 to 39 years. Body mass index (BMI), percent body fat (PBF), body fat mass (kg), and waist hip ratio (WHR) were measured as obesity indices. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured as cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk factors. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SAS 9.4. Results: Statistically significant factors were BMI for SEP; age, degree of drinking, body fat mass for DBP; WHR for TC; WHR and age for TG; age, degree of smoking and PBF for HDL-C; WHR, age and degree of smoking for LDL-C. Conclusion: Factors identified in this study need to be considered in cardio-cerebrovascular disease prevention programs for young men.

In this study, a new blood pressure measuring system was proposed and implemented. An additional small-cuff was placed on the center of a inner cuff to measure morphological signals and new oscillometric ratio. The proposed BP-measuring system is composed of an external cuff, an inner cuff and a small-cuff. Oscillation signal from small-cuff is interpolated with 7th-order fitting polynomials and SBP, DBP ratio were 22.2% and 87.7%. Experimental data were gathered from 20 volunteers ($25{\pm}4$ years) and arterial blood pressure values were compared with auscultation, sphygmomanometers, small-cuff and inner-cuff. As a result, the difference in systolic BP between auscultation and the small-cuff was 1.93(${\pm}1.28$) mmHg, and the inner-cuff was 4.53(${\pm}4.39$) mmHg, and sphygmomanometer was 6.68(${\pm}3.99$) mmHg, and the corresponding difference in diastolic BP was 2.50(${\pm}2.04$) mmHg, 3.50(${\pm}3.19$) mmHg, 7.35(${\pm}5.62$), respectively.

ACE (Angiotensin-I converting enzyme) inhibitory peptides derived from foods are thought to suppress high blood pressure by inhibiting ACE. We tried to make efficient production of the ACE inhibitory hydrolysate from egg albumen. A hydrolysate digested by neutrase presented the highest ACE inhibitory activity ($IC_50\;value=256.35{\mu}g/ml$) and the proper proteolysis was occurred by 1.0% enzyme addition and 4 h incubation at $47^{\circ}C$. Antihypertensive effect of neutrase hydrolysate was investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR, n=5). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was decrease by 6.88% (-14.14 mmHg, p<0.05) at 3 h after oral administration of 300 mg/kg body weight, and by 13.33% (-27.72 mmHg, p<0.05) by emulsified hydrolysate. These results showed that it is very effective to utilize egg albumen as a protein source for the production of ACE inhibitory peptides. However, further studies are required to investigate the methods to increase recovery yield and the isolation of active peptide is necessary for determining its sequence responsible for ACE inhibitory activity.
Purpose: This study was aimed to determine the optimum low-density lipoprotein : high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL : HDL-C) ratio for predicting coronary heart disease(CHD) in Korean people. Methods: It was analyzed this data of 5,431 adults who had undergone health examinations in a hospital in Gyeonggi-do between January 2006 and December 2007. The covariation of the coronary risk factors such as age, HbA1C, systolic blood pressure(SBP), and waist-to-stature ratio(WSR) were analyzed by using logistic regression analysis. Results: The LDL : HDL-C ratio in the male and female groups was mostly distributed between 1.5 and 4.0. The LDL : HDL-C ratio was the most significant cholesterol-related parameter influencing CHD (male: B = .306, p = .054, female : B = .940, p = .010), followed by LDL-C and total cholesterol. It was observed a sharp increase in the odds ratios for LDL : HDL-C ratios of 2.25 - 2.50(male) and 2.00 - 2.25(female). A significant difference was observed in both male(2.25 : $x^2$ = 2.494, p = .072) and female(2.00 : $x^2$ = 413.742, p = .000) groups. Conclusion: The risk level of CHD was set to 2.25 for males and 2.00 for females. Therefore, the optimum LDL : HDL-C ratio for Koreans should be far lower than that for the people in western countries.
"Living in the present moment," a Buddhist concept, was applied in this research. This concept urges the patients to cling neither to the past nor the future as well as being mindful of their body, feelings, mind, and mental qualities. The purpose of the study was to develop a "living in the present moment" model and to evaluate the power of "living in the present moment" in terms of physical and mental results. The study used non-participatory action research with quasi-experimental research design that included 3 camps composed of 6 main activities. The percentages, SD, and paired t-test statistics were used to analyze and compare 17 purposively selected diabetic patients from Pak Thong Chai Hospital before and after they attended the 3 camps. The patients improved significantly in terms of waistline, body weight, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (SBP and DBP). The mean of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level was also changed considerably. The results revealed that the treatment helped the patients to gain self-awareness and self-realization (Yonisomanasikara), as well as knowledge and increased support from friends (Kalyanamitta). They also let go of their attachment to their physical and mental oppressions. This helped the patients to relieve their daily pain, fatigue, insomnia, and diabetes-related complications. About 75% of all patients were able to achieve lifestyle modifications. Therefore, implementation of the model should be expanded and utilized in other diabetic centers. The model might also be expanded to pre-diabetes.
Noninvasive, cuffless, and continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring is essential to prevent and control hypertension. A well-known existing method for this measurement is pulse transit time (PTT), which has been investigated by many researchers as a promising approach. However, the fundamental principle of the PTT method is based on the time interval taken by a pulse wave to propagate between the proximal and distal arterial sites. Consequently, this method needs an independent system with two devices placed at two different sites, which is a problem. Even though some studies attempted to synchronize the system, it is bulky and inconvenient by contemporary standards. To find a more sensitive method to be used in a BP measurement device, this study used radial electrical bioimpedance (REB) as a potential indicator for BP determination. Only one impedance plethysmography channel at the wrist is performed for demonstrating a ubiquitous BP wearable device. The experiment was evaluated on eight healthy subjects with the ambulatory BP monitor on the upper arm as a reference. The results demonstrated the potential of the proposed method by the correlation of estimated systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP against the reference at $0.84{\pm}0.05$ and $0.83{\pm}0.05$, respectively. REB also tracked the DBP well with a root-mean-squared-error of $7.5{\pm}1.35mmHg$.
