  • One main purpose of environmental monitoring after oil spill is developing ESI (Environmental Sensitivity) Maps. Environmental impacts caused by the spilt oil are strongly depending upon the coastal topology and geology. Monitoring all impacted shorelines is almost impossible; using high-resolution satellite images such as IKONOS greatly contributes to improve the efficiency of on-site researches, at the same time, reliability of ESI maps.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme for matching specified areas in a satellite image, which is a very efficient method because it can be effectively applied to images that have various features. These features may include different spatial resolution and brightness; sometimes they may different geometrical property. The proposed method can be applied to some application fields such as mosaicing of satellite imagery, GCP matching.

  • The focal plane image stabilization for a satellite camera is one of the an effective method which can increase the satellite camera's image quality by removing the motion disturbance of a focal plane. The objectives of this article are to introduce the concept of the focal plane image stabilization and determine the best driving conditions of the actuator for the response and thrust. Under various driving condition the experiments have been performed to investigate the response and thrust characteristics of the piezoelectric driven stick-slip actuator of the focal plane image stabilizing device. From experiments, the best driving frequency and duty ratio for the magnesium slider are 70 kHz and 27%, respectively.

  • Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) is the main payload of the KOMPSAT-1 satellite to perform the mission of cartography that builds up a digital map of Korean territory including a digital terrain elevation map. This paper discusses the issues of the digital image simulation of EOC for the generation of EOC simulated scene as taken by EOC at 685km altitude on orbit. For the purpose, simulation work has been performed with the sensor models of EOC and the satellite platform motions models through image chain analysis from the illumination source (Sun) to a simulated image output in digital number. MODTRAN fur radiance calculation, MTF models of optics, detector and motions of EOC for system point spread function (PSF), and signal chain equations for digital number output are described. Several noise models of EOC are also considered. The final output is the EOC simulated image in digital number. The simulation technique can be used in several phase of a spaceborne electro-optical system development project, feasibility study phase, design, manufacturing, test phases, ground image processing phases, and so on.

  • Among the various image fusion or pan-sharpening methods, those wavelet-based methods provide superior radiometric quality. However, the fusion processing is not only simple but also flexible, since many low- and high-frequency sub-bands are often produced in the wavelet domain. To address this issue, a novel DT-CWT (Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform) proportional to the fusion method by a WZP (Wavelet Zero-Padding) is proposed. The proposed method produces a single high-frequency image in the spatial domain that is injected into the LRM (Low-Resolution Multispectral) image. Thus, a wavelet domain fusion can be simplified to spatial domain fusion. In addition, in the proposed DT-CWTP (DT-CWT Proportional) fusion method, it is unnecessary to decompose the LRM image by adopting WZP. The comparison indicates that the proposed fusion method is nearly five times faster than the DT-CWT with SW (Substitute-Wavelet) fusion method, meanwhile simultaneously maintaining the radiometric quality. The conducted experiments with WorldView-2 satellite images demonstrated promising results with the computation efficiency and fused image quality.

  • In this paper, we provide a summary on the core essence of INR (Image Navigation and Registration) System technology which is an essential function of geostationary remote sensing satellites. Its origin and evolution history is reviewed, its core elements and governing concept for each element are described, and a generic INR architecture is suggested which can cover all seemingly conceivable INR systems of the past, the current and the future. By this, we intend to identify and illuminate the core technical contents and the key aspects in the foreseen prospect of the up-coming INR systems and the related technologies.

  • A multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system is developed to solve the manhole cover detection problem for the infrastructure maintenance in the suburbs of big city. The visible light sensor is employed to collect the ground image data and a series of image processing and machine learning methods are used to detect the manhole cover. First, the image enhancement technique is employed to improve the imaging effect of visible light camera. An imaging environment perception method is used to increase the computation robustness: the blind Image Quality Evaluation Metrics (IQEMs) are used to percept the imaging environment and select the images which have a high imaging definition for the following computation. Because of its excellent processing effect the adaptive Multiple Scale Retinex (MSR) is used to enhance the imaging quality. Second, the Single Shot multi-box Detector (SSD) method is utilized to identify the manhole cover for its stable processing effect. Third, the spatial coordinate of manhole cover is also estimated from the ground image. The practical applications have verified the outdoor environment adaptability of proposed algorithm and the target detection correctness of proposed system. The detection accuracy can reach 99% and the positioning accuracy is about 0.7 meters.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of fall-down detection algorithm based on image processing. The fall-down detection algorithm separates objects by using background subtraction and binarization after grayscale conversion of the input image acquired by the camera, and recognizes the human body by using labeling operation. The recognized human body can be monitored on the display image, and an alarm is generated when fall-down is detected. By using computer simulation, the proposed algorithm has shown a detection rate of 90%. We verify the feasibility of the proposed system by verifying the function by using the prototype test implemented on the DSP image processing board.
