  • A C-band ground-based rotational SAR system is presented in this paper. The rotaional SAR system is a test-bed for future rotational SAR systems which can be deployed in space and on a tower. The test-bed system is designed for imaging the electromagnetic scattering from earth surfaces and buried targets. This paper also presents the examination results of the generated SAR images. This rotational SAR system is basically consisted of the network-analyzer based HPS(Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) and a horizontally rotating arm. Several SAR images were obtained using the rotational SAR system for various target areas. To verify this system, we simulated the SAR images for the rotational SAR using the FDTD algorithm and compared between the measured and simulated SAR images. The rotational SAR system is operated at the center frequency of 5 GHz and various frequency bandwidth within 0.5~2 GHz to change the resolution of SAR images.

  • GB-SAR (Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar) system is an imaging radar that obtains high resolution 2-D image through a synthetic aperture effect from the accurate linear-motion control of antenna on the ground. The highly versatile system configurations and accurate repeatability of GB-SAR operation allow one to accurately monitor the stability of surface scatterers with millimeter accuracy by SAR interferometry. In this paper we introduce the development of a GB-SAR system and show the possibilities of SAR polarimetry and interferometry such as DInSAR, Cross-Track InSAR, Delta-f InSAR, and PSInSAR.

  • Dosimetry of radiating electromagnetic wave from mobile devices to human body has been evaluated by measuring Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). Usual SAR measurement system scans the volume by robot arm to evaluate RF power absorption to human body from wireless devices. It is possible to fast estimate the volume SAR by software deleting robot moving time with the 2D surface SAR data acquired by arrayed probes. This paper shows the principle of fast SAR measurement and the measured data comparison between the fast SAR system and the robot scanning system. Data of the fast SAR is well corresponding with data of robot scanning SAR within ${\pm}3$ dB, and its dynamic range covers from 10 mW/kg to 30 W/kg with 4.8 mm probe diameter.

  • In this study, we propose a performance analysis of a quadrature-polarimetric(quad-pol) synthetic aperture radar(SAR) system for wide-swath operation mode and compare it with a single-pol system based on the operation mode. To achieve a shorter revisit time for an SAR satellite, we must observe a wide area, and two SAR operation modes exist for this purpose, which are called ScanSAR and SweepSAR. In general, a quad-pol SAR system can obtain a greater variety of information about a target than a single-pol system. Because this system affects system performance parameters, analyzing these effects is required. Based on a performance analysis of the wide-swath quad-pol SAR system, the system parameters and appropriate operation mode can be selected to satisfy the performance requirements.

  • The SAR evaluation system with 9 stationary probes inserted into the object to be surveyed can calculate area SAR value based on the 9 measured electric field data. The results can be acquired in a few seconds by converting obtained area SAR to the volume SAR. The system can be very useful tool in the stages of handset development for mobile communication as well as in the handset production line because of its rapid SAR measurement ability. The validity of the measurement system is checked by showing that the measured SAR values agree well with reference SAR values suggested in the reference documents.

  • A raw signal simulator for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a useful tool for the design and implementation of SAR system. Also, in order to analyze and verify the developed SAR processor, the raw signal simulator is required. Moreover, there is the need for a test system to help designing new SAR sensors and mission of SAR system. The derived parameters of the SAR simulator also help to generate accurate SAR processing algorithms. Although the ultimate purpose of this research is to presents a general purpose SAR simulator, this paper presents a SAR simulator in frequency domain at the first step. The proposed simulator generates the raw signal by changing various simulation parameters such as antenna parameters, modulation parameters, and sampling parameters. It also uses the statistics from an actual SAR image to imitate actual physical scattering. This paper introduces the procedures and parameters of the simulator, and presents the simulation results. Experiments have been conducted by comparing the simulated raw data with original raw SAR image. In addition, the simulated raw data have been verified through commercial SAR processing software.

  • With the advance of radar technologies, the availability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images increases. To improve application of SAR images, a management system for SAR images is proposed in this paper. The system provides trainable land cover classification module and display of SAR images on the map. Users of the system can create their own classifier with their data, and obtain the classified results of newly captured SAR images by applying the classifier to the images. The classifier is based on convolutional neural network structure. Since there are differences among SAR images depending on capturing method and devices, a fixed classifier cannot cover all types of SAR land cover classification problems. Thus, it is adopted to create each user's classifier. In our experiments, it is shown that the module works well with two different SAR datasets. With this system, SAR data and land cover classification results are managed and easily displayed.

  • A technique for the simulation of various kinds of ground based SAR system was developed. This is an ancillary research for the development of an ArcSAR system which uses an arc-rail as a platform for the antenna movement instead of linear rail. The results of applying conventional Deramp FFT based SAR focusing algorithm to the simulated raw signal of linear rail type ground based SAR for the point targets showed that the developed simulation technique generated accurate GB-SAR raw signal. The developed technique is now being used for the development and verification of SAR focusing algorithm for the arc-rail type ground based SAR. The simulation technique is also expected to be very useful for the purpose oriented system design and operation planning of ground based SAR technique.
