Satrec Initiative (Si) is developing a ground processing system for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. SAR provides its own illumination and is not dependent on the light from sun, thus permitting continuous day/night operation and all-weather imaging. The system is capable of producing standard level products from SAR signal. Hence, the system should be able to perform matched filtering, range compression, azimuth compression, multi-look image generation, and geocoded image generation. This paper will describe the processing steps including algorithms, design, and accuracy of the Si's SAR processing system by comparing with commercial software.

COSPAS-SARSAT is the search and rescue system for providing a distress alarm and a position identification using an international satellite and ground facilities. Aviators, mariners and land users worldwide are equipped with COSPAS-SARSAT distress beacons, which could help save their in emergency situations anywhere in the world. As the existing COSPAS-SARSAT system is generally operated by LEO(Low-altitude Earth Orbit) Satellite System, the time from the distress beacon to the rescue is more than 1 hour with average and the accuracy of the distress location is about 5 Km. Therefore, in order to overcome this problem, the development for the next generation SAR(search and rescue) system which uses the MEO(middle-altitude Earth Orbit) satellites is going on the Galileo project. EU is developing this project for the full operation capability in 2011, and this project will have SAR payloads and support to the Search and Rescue service-herein called SAR/Galileo. SAR/Galileo will have the performance of a few meter accuracy, within 10 minutes to rescue from reception of distress messages, and Return Link Service(from the SAR operator to the distress emitting beacon), thereby facilitating more efficient rescue operations and helping to reduce the rate of false alerts. As the disaster is larger every year, the ground station, MEOLUT for next generation ASR/Galileo is urgently needed for the lifesaving for the larger disaster, the research for beacon and the ground station such as MEOLUT for introducing the next generation SAR/Galileo in Korea is very timely and is important. This paper presents the procedures and the strategies for the participation, the area to develop reasonably, and the propulsion organization for developing the SAR/Galileo ground system in Korea.
The downlink data rates of the space-born payloads such as high-resolution optical cameras, synthetic aperture radars (SAR) and hyper-spectral sensors are being rapidly increased. For example, the image transmission rates of KOMPSAT-2 MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) is 320Mbps even if on-board image compression scheme is used.[1] In the near future, the data rates are expected to be a level 500${\sim}$600Mbps because the required resolution will be higher and the swath width will be increased. This paper describes many techniques they enable 500Mbps data receiving and archiving system.

Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active microwave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather conditions. Although there are many advantages of SAR instrument, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate SAR image products. Many research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. However, it is hard to find research which compare the quality of SAR products generated with different algorithms and processing methods. In our previous research, a SAR processing s/w was developed for a ground station. In addition, quality assessment procedures and their test parameters inside a SAR processor was proposed. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the quality of SAR images generated from the developed SAR processing s/w. However, If there are no direct measurements such as radar reflector or scattering field measurement values it is difficult to compare SAR images generated with different methods. An alternative procedures and parameters for SAR image quality evaluation are presented and the problems involved in the comparison methods are discussed. Experiments based on real data have been conducted to evaluate and analyze quality of SAR images.
A high speed data link capability is one of the critical factors in determining the performance of the spaceborne SAR system with high resolution. It is due to the strict requirement for the real-time data transmission from a series of massive raw image data of spaceborne SAR to the ground station in a limited time of mission. In this paper, based on the data link model characterized by the spaceborne small SAR system, the high rate multi-channel data link module is designed including link storage, link processor, transmitter, and wide-angle antenna. The design results are presented with the performance analysis on the data link budget as well as the multi-mode data rate in association with the SAR imaging mode of operation from high resolution to the wide swath.

The size of raw data has dramatically increased due to the recent trend of Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) development plans for high resolution and high definition image acquisition. The large raw data has an impact on satellite operability due to the limitations of storage and transmission capacity. To improve the SAR operability, the SAR raw data shall be compressed before transmission to the ground station. The Block Adaptive Quantization (BAQ) algorithm is one of the data compression algorithm and has been used for a long time in the spaceborne SAR system. In this paper, an optimization method of BAQ threshold table is introduced using real SAR raw data to prevent the degradation of signal quality caused by data compression. In this manner, a new variation estimation strategy and a new threshold method for block type decision are introduced.

The ground subsidence that occurred in the abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We carried out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise stable reflectors(PS: permanent scatterer) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases and compared it with the distribution map of in situ examined crack level. PSs could be identified by means of amplitude dispersion index and coherence of the interferograms and the density of PS was much higher in an urban area than in a mountainous region. The measured subsidence rate represented the average velocity in a period of image acquisition and excluded complex nonlinear displacements such as an abrupt collapse. The mean line-of-sight velocity in the study area is 0.19cm/yr and the estimation error is 0.18cm/yr. The center of the abandoned Gaeun coal mine(0.49cm/yr) and the area opposite Gaeun station(1.66cm/yr) were observed as the most highly subsiding areas.
The ground subsidence that occurred in an abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed by using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We estimated the subsidence on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise permanent scatters (PSs) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases. Band-limited filtering will be applied to remove interference resulted from two neighbored channels in the transmission of KOMPSAT-5 X-Band image data. In that case, receiver in ground station should prepare righteous matched filter to avoid huge BER degradation depending on the matched filter of COTS receiver. As an effort to simulate the bandlimited filtering, test filter was designed and manufactured on the basis of main specification for output filter of KOMPSAT-5 satellite. Consequently, 1.8dB of BER degradation was measured at the output of test band-pass filter, but the degradation was downsized up to 0.4dB thanks to the adaptive matched filter of COTS receiver.
