  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the survival rate and influencing factors. Patients and Methods: We studied 104 patients who were diagnosed for squamous cell carcinoma of tongue and received curative treatment in oral oncology clinic of National Cancer Center from June 2001 to December 2009. Results: We found the following results. 1. The overall 5-year survival rate of tongue cancer was 67.0% and there was no significant statistical difference between male and female. 2. A lower survival rate was shown in patients under 40 years (42.2%) than over 40 years (75.5%)(P < 0.05). 3. 5-year survival rates of patients with tongue cancer classified by pTNM classification were 87.4% in early stage and 43.3% (P < 0.05). 4. A higher survival rate was seen in patients without cervical lymph node metastasis (82.0% > 44.1%)(P < 0.05). 5. A higher survival rate was seen in patients of tongue cancer with higher differenciation grade (P < 0.05). 6. It is well known that drinking and smoking have great influence on the survival rate of patients of squamous cell carcinoma of tongue. But these was no statistical significance. Conclusion: The overall 5-year survival rate of tongue cancer was 67.0% and it was mostly influenced by factors like age, pTNM stage, cervical lymph node metastasis, differentiation of cancer cell etc.

  • The influence of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens are studied experimentally. The hens are fed with three dose levels of ethanol extract of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax for 24 months and for comparing, there are control hens and young control hens. The results are as follows. 1. Hemoglobin, hematocrit and erythrocyte sedimentation rate values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax are not significantly. different from control group. There is tendency of decreasing of erythrocyte sedimentation rate with aging. 2. The serum total lipid values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax have tendency of increment compared with control group, especially in large dose treated hens of Panax ginseng and it is statistically significant. The serum cholesterol levels of all treated hens seem to be increased without significance statistically. Serum triglyceride level is higher in young hens compared with aged, and Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens reveal much higher values than control hens. So the increment of triglyceride levels in the Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens may be mainly contribute to increment of total lipid content. 3. Long-term administration of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax seem to increase total serum protein content. Such increment seem to be due to the increment of globulin, especially gamma globulin, which is statistically significant in the large dose group of Acanthopanax. There are no differences of serum albumin levels of all the groups. 4. The blood glucose level and the glycogen content of liver and muscle have no difference among all the experimental groups. To summarize the results, the effects of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens have similarity in the majority of data of this experiment, and seem to be mainly influence to lipid and protein metabolisms by increasing serum triglyceride and globulin, especially gamma globulin.

  • Recently, miniaturization of large scale integrated circuits (LSI) and printed circuit board (PCB) have become essential with the downsizing of electronic devices. Gold electroplating is applied of conductivity wiring or terminals for improvement of conductivity and corrosion resistance. However, electroplating is not applicable since the circuits are becoming finer and denser. Accordingly, electroless plating is recently highly attractive method because of the simplicity of the operation requiring no external source of current and no elaborate equipment. In this work, we tried to develop a plating technique on electroless Ni/Au plating. First, the electroless Ni plating was deposited on the PCB with agitation in the bath at $85^{\circ}C$. Then the Au layer was deposited on the Ni layer surface by same method at $90^{\circ}C$. The bonderability were tested in order to evaluate the stability of the electroless Ni/Au by gold wire or solder ball test.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. A few of studies which compared and continuously measured the stability of various surface treated implants in the same individual had been performed. PURPOSE. We aim to find the clinical significance of surface treatments by observing the differences in the stabilization stages of implant stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Eight different surface topographies of dental implants were especially designed for the present study. Machined surface implants were used as a control group. 4 nano-treated surface implants(20 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, heat-treated 80 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, CaP coating surface, heat treated CaP coating surface) and 3 micro-treated surface implants [resorbable blast media(RBM) surface, sandblast and acid-etched(SAE) surface, anodized RBM surface] were used as experiment groups. All 24 implants were placed in 3 adult dogs. $Periotest^{(R)}$ & ISQ values measured for 8 weeks and all animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after surgery. Then the histological analyses were done. RESULTS. In PTV, all implants were stabilized except 1 failed implants. In ISQ values, The lowest stability was observed at different times for each individual. The ISQ values were showed increased tendency after 5 weeks in every groups. After 4 to 5 weeks, the values were stabilized. There was no statistical correlation between the ISQ values and PTV. In the histological findings, the bone formation was observed to be adequate in general and no differences among the 8 surface treated implants. CONCLUSIONS. In this study, the difference in the stability of the implants was determined not by the differences in the surface treatment but by the individual specificity.

  • Purpose: There are multiple dependent variables commonly attributed to survival of replanted digits. The ischemia time is thought to be a clinically relevant factor. However, controversy exists as large hand centers have reported successful replant outcomes independent of ischemic time. In this study, we present a single institution experience on the effect of ischemia time on the survival of completely amputated digits. Methods: A retrospective review of a single institution experience was performed. This cohort included all comers who had suffered complete amputation of a digit (Zone 2-4) and underwent replantation from 2003 to 2009. Demographic information as well as injury mechanism, ischemic time, and replantation outcome were recorded for each patient. Chi-square was used to analyze the result. Results: Mean age was 35.5 years old (2-69). Mean replantation survival was 89.5% (37/317). Survival rates were 94, 88, and 88% in respective groups of 0~6, 6~12, of > 12 hours of ischemia time. In chi-square analysis, there was no difference with $p$ value of 0.257. No other independent patient factors showed statistically significant relationship to replant survival rate. In the group with longest ischemia time (12~18 hours) replant survival rate was 88% (37/42). Conclusion: Prolonged ischemia time is commonly believed to be a contributing factor for replant survival. However, our experience has shown that survival rate is uniform up to 18 hours of ischemia.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in spatiotemporal gait performance, function, and pain of lower-extremity according to foot morphological characteristics. Method: This case-control study recruited 42 adults and they were classified into 3 groups according to foot morphology using navicular-drop test: pronated (≥ 10 mm), normal (5~9 mm), and supinated (≤ 4 mm) feet. Spatiotemporal gait analysis and questionnaires including Foot and Ankle Ability Measure activities of daily living / Sports, Western Ontario and McMasters Universities Osteoarthritis Index, Lower Extremity Functional Scale, International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and Tegner activity score were conducted. One-way analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis. Results: The pronated feet group showed longer loading response and double limb support in both feet and increased pre-swing phase in non-dominant feet. The supinated feet group demonstrated a longer swing phase in non-dominant feet and single limb support in dominant feet. However, there was no significant group difference in function and pain of knee joint and lower-extremity between groups. Conclusion: Our results indicated that abnormal spatiotemporal gait performance according to foot morphology. Although there was no difference in lower extremity dysfunction and pain according to the difference in foot morphology, they have the possibility of symptom occurs as a result of continuous participation in activities of daily living and sports. Therefore, individuals with pronated or supinated foot should be supplemented by utilizing an orthosis or training to restore normal gait performance.

  • This study was performed to identify the effect of synovium graft on conjunctiva in rabbits after dry eye induction. Six New Zealand White rabbits were used as dry eye models. Both eyes were divided to two groups as control and synovium graft group. The synovium graft was performed in fourth week after dry eye modeling. Quantitative change of tears through Schirmer tear test (STT), qualitative change of tear film through tear film break up time (TFBUT), and damage of cornea through fluorescein staining were observed for 10 weeks at intervals of two weeks. Histological examination was performed to evaluate cornea and conjunctiva at tenth week. In both groups, STT and TFBUT were significantly decreased in 4 weeks after modeling compared to 0 weeks (p < 0.05) . After synovium graft, there were increases in STT value at 4 weeks and TFBUT at 4 and 6 weeks in graft group (p < 0.05). Corneal fluorescein staining showed no significant difference between the two groups. In histopathological examination, grafted synovium was detected as round to ovoid ingression folds, well attached to grafted regions with 0.11 ± 0.04 mm2 (range, 0.05-0.16 mm2). These results indicated that the synovium graft on the conjunctiva had an effect on the qualitative and quantitative improvement of the tear film even though there was no histological change.

  • The distribution and relative frequency of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the pancreas were studied during developmental stages (fetus, neonate, 1-month-old, 6-month-old and adult) of the Korean native goat by immunohistochemical methods. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected in the exocrine of all ages, in the endocrine portions (pancreatic islets) from the neonate, and in the pancreatic duct of the 1-month-old. The relative frequencies of these cells in the pancreatic islets increased with age. However, there were no age-related changes in the relative frequencies of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the exocrine and pancreatic duct. Generally, they were distributed in the interacinar spaces, the epithelium of the pancreatic duct, or dispersed in the peripheral zone of the pancreatic islets in all ages. However, clusters consisting of 3-4 cells were also found in the subepithelial connective tissues from the 1-month-old. In addition, the distributions in the endocrine portions of the adult were divided into two patterns: 1) they are dispersed in the marginal regions with moderate or low frequencies, or 2) in the inner zone with high frequencies.

  • In general, a brake system of axle for heavy duty machine as a wheel excavator makes use of wet-type multiple disk brakes. These disk bakes are very important parts of heavy duty machine because they are advanced in durability and braking power, and can be designed compactly. Thus, we designed and made wet-type multiple disk brakes of axle for the 14ton class wheel excavator to be localization of these imported all. These disk brakes were made a comparative test with the existing disk brakes by the SAE No.2 dynamometer, and the friction characteristics as dynamic and static friction coefficient and wear depth of friction paper were measured.

  • To study the role of anomalous pancreatico-biliary ductal union (APBDU) in the development of choledochal cyst, we reviewed 23 cases. APBDU is defined as a long common channel(>0.4 mm). The patients ages ranged from 1 week to 112 months and the mean age was 22.5 months. Right upper quadrant pain was the most prevalent symptom. The diagnosis was made by ultrasonography and operative cholangiography in most patient. The preoperative diagnosis was made in 100 % of the cases. Gallstones were found in 5 cases. Todani type I and type IV were prevalent. A long common channel was found in all cases. The operative treatment consisted of cyst excision and Reux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy or choledochojejunosotmy. One patient had postoperative pancreatitis. There was no mortality. We conclude that detection of choledochal cyst is occurring at a younger age and APBDU seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis of type I and IV cysts. Cyst excision is the treatment of choice to eliminate repeated cholangitis and malignant transformation.
