This study was conducted to investigate the physiological activities of extracts from Suaeda japonica harvested in different season for its possibility as a functional material in food or cosmetic composition. The total mineral content of S. japonica harvested in summer was about 89.8 g/kg, and it comprised a little more content than one in winter (86.7 g/kg). The Na content of S. japonica did not show a remarkable contrast on harvest season whereas the K and Ca contents of summer were decreased to half or increased to double in winter. In addition, the antioxidative activity of each extract from S. japonica changed depending on harvest season. For S. japonica harvested in summer, the ethyl acetate extract showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity, but in winter the butanol extract fraction had the highest value. However, FRAP values were the highest in butanol extracts from S. japonica harvested in summer and winter. Total phenolic contents in the extracts were in proportion to the antioxidative activities. From the tyrosinase inhibition assay and melanogenesis with B16BL6, the hexane extracts from both seasons had shown the highest whitening effects. These results suggest that the extraction methods should be optimized depending on harvest season to utilize the S. japonica as functional component source.
To clarify seed distribution in sediment and its burial properties of Suaeda japonica, the vertical and horizontal distribution of seeds, organic content of sediment, and sediment content delivered by crabs were studied in mud tidal-flat of Walgot-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, from March 1999 to October 2000. The 94% and 6% of S. japonica seeds were buried under and outside the maternal plant crown, respectively. Organic matter contents of sediment were higher at the area (17%) covered than at the one (8%) uncovered by S. japonica. In the area covered by S. suaeda, organic matter profiles of sediment showed vertical variation from 19% in surface (1 cm depth) to 14% in 6 cm depth. S. japonica seeds buried in sediment decreased from 45% in 2 mm depth to 0% in 12 mm depth. The density of crabs was higher in the vegetated area than in the non-vegetated one. Especially, the density of Cleistostoma was about 8 times higher in the former than in the latter In the vegetated area, the amount of sediment delivered by crabs was estimated to be 2,409 $cm^3{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and this could ascend the height of sediment to 2.4 mm. Consequently, it might be interpreted that plant debris (organic matters) of maternal plants and sediment delivered by crabs made the S. japonica seeds bury well. By relationship between crab distribution and vegetation, it was thought that crabs got a benefit from S. japonica.
This study was designed to observe the effects of the feeding Callophyllis japonica extracts on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid in the serum of dietary hypercholesterolemic rats(S.D. strain, ?) fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in serum were significantly lower in the Callophylis japonica extracts group than in the choloesterol supplemented diet group. Concentrations of HDL-cholesterol in serum were higher in the Callophyllis japonica extracts group than in the cholesterol supplemented diet group. Concentrations of free cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and blood glucose in serum were significantly lower in the Callophyllis japonica extracts group than in the cholesterol supplemented diet group. The activities of aspatate aminotransferae(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) in serum were lower in the CAllophyllis japonica extracts supplemented group than in the cholesterol diet group. From the above research, the physiological activity substances in Callophylis japonica extracts were effective on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid compositions in serum of dietary hypercholesterolemic rats.
A taxonomic review of the family Sillaginidae was carried out based on two species (Sillago japonica and S. parvisquamis) collected in the coastal waters of Korea from 2008 to 2009 and three species (S. parvisquamis, S. aeolus and S. sihama) kept in the museum. Sillago japonica was easily distinguished from S. parvisquamis and S. sihama by lateral line scales (70~73 in S. japonica vs. 77~81 in S. parvisquamis vs. 67~70 in S. sihama) and scales above lateral line (3~4 vs. 7 vs. 5~6, respectively). Sillago aeolus differed from the other three species in having dark brown blotches on the side of body. We newly found morphological differences in some measurements (snout length, pectoral fin length and $2^{nd}$ anal spine length) and the number of vertebrae between Korean and Japanese S. parvisquamis, suggesting the two may be different populations. Although four sillaginid species are known from Korea, only two species (S. japonica and S. parvisquamis) were found in this study; accordingly, the distribution of the remaining two species (S. sihama and S. aeolus) may be restricted to subtropical waters.

The methylene chloride soluble fraction of MeOH extract from the stem bark of Styrax japonica S. et Z. (Styracaceae) showed significant cytotoxicity by SRB method against five human tumor cell lines. Four known pentacyclic triterpenoids, oleanolic aldehyde acetate (1), erythrodiol-3-acetate (2), euphorginol (3), and anhydrosophoradiol -3-acetate (4) were isolated by activity-guided fractionation. Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral analysis. Compounds 1-4 were isolated from S. japonica for the first time.
Weedy rice(red rice) collected in Korea were crossed with the Japonica, Javanica and Indica tester cultivars, and also crossed among those collected lines. Their seed fertility was counted and refered to their cross affinities. Some tester cultivars such as, Suweongjo, Malagkit Sinaguing and wx 817 which were regarded as belong to the Japonica, Javanica and Indica respectively, showed the typical tendencies of hybrid sterility when they were crossed each other. But, other testers such as Kwanak, Tapaiko, Belle Patna and Tarichaosun showed some differencies from those typical patterns, implying some varigations within a ecotype. The hybrids of weedy rice crossed to the Japonica testers showed higher fertility with a few semisterilities. While the crosses of weedy rice to the Javanicas or Indicas showed high sterility implying closer affinity relationships of weedy rice to the Japonicas. Even those weedy rice lines such as Samsanmyeon 8 and Sanchungaengmi B which showed semi-sterility when they were crossed to the Japonica testers showed high sterility when they were crossed to both Javanicas and Indicas. The hybrids among weedy rice lines showed high fertility raning 69% to 96%. Even those weedy rice lines which showed semi-sterility in the crosses with Japonica testers, showed high-fertility when they were crossed with those weedy rice lines. Though the amylose content, Alkali Digestive Value, Phenol reaction and grain shapes of theose weedy rice lines showed divers variations, the cross affinities of them showed closer phylogenie relationship to the Japonicas than to Japvanicas or Indicas. But the genetic influinces of Indicas to those weedy rices were not ignorable.
The fish community and upstream of glass eels (Anguilla japonica) in the Imjin River estuary Gyeonggi-do, Korea was investigated from 2008 to 2012. During the surveyed period 43 species belonging to 18 families were collected. Korean endemic species was Microphysogobio jeoni which showed a ration of 0.04% in collected species. Exotic fishes were Carassius cuvieri and Ctenophayngodon idellus, and comprised 0.06% of the total individual number. Among the fish species observed, 17 species of the freshwater fish (40.5%), 6 species of migration fish (14.2%), 8 species of the brackish water fish (19.1%) and 11 species of sea water fish (26.1%). In terms of composition ration, Anguilla japonica (glass eels, 49.8%), Coilia ectens (23.3%), Saurogobio dabryi (8.1%), Repomucenus olidus (3.3%), Lateolabrax maculata (2.9%) and Chelon haematocheilus (2.8%) were found to display high individual number. On the other hand, C. ectens (33.6%), C. haematocheilus (14.2%), Cyprinus carpio (10.5%), Mugil cephalus (9.1%) and S. dabryi (7.6%) were dominated of biomass. The dominant species of individual was A. japonica (glass eels), and subdomint species included C. ectens. The fish biomass catched of fisherman in the Imjin River (Paju-si) were 83.6~240.3 t by each year. The year 2011 and 2012 were decreased rapidly. Among these, M. cephalus (48.0~80.0%), C. carpio (6.7%), Carassius auratus (4.9%), Silurus asotus (3.9%), Takifugu obscurus (2.5%), Anguilla japonica (adult, 2.2%) and Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (2.1%) dominated of biomass. Body weight of glass eels at each year were 0.03~ 1.13 t, average 212.0 kg and 1,325,000 individual by 0.16 g each one individual.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos in vitro, which has been frequently used in inflammatory diseases. Methods: In this experiment, the anti-inflammatory effects of ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos were evaluated by checking the following substances of LPS-activated Raw264.7 cell: Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), Nitric oxide (NO), Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible Nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), Interlukine-1β (IL-1β), Interlukine-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Inhibitor of kappa B-α (IκBα), Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). And additionally measured reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals to check the antioxidant effect of ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos which affect inflammatory responses. Results: As a result of measuring anti-inflammatory efficacy, PGE2, NO, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α production amounts were reduced in the ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos groups compared with the control group, and decreased the amount of COX-2 mRNA, iNOS mRNA gene expression. Expression of MAPK (ERK, JNK, p38) pathway was decreased. Expression of IκBα was increased and NF-κB was decreased. It is demonstrated that ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos, by reducing NF-κB, regulate the expression of the inflammatory genes and reduce the inflammatory mediators. Ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos also decreased ROS production and free radicals, which shown to have antioxidant efficacy and influence anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions: These data suggest that ethanol extracts from Forsythia viridissima Lindley's fructus and Lonicera japonica Thunberg's flos can be used to treat various inflammatory diseases.
Saccharina japonica is a type of seaweed rich in dietary fiber, iodine, calcium, and selenium. We investigated the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of gruel made with S. japonica powder, and identified the best ratio of powder to gruel to maximize its health effects. The gruel was prepared with rice, glutinous rice, GABA (${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid)-enriched sea tangle fermented in lactic acid (0.3%), and various amounts (0-10% gruel volume) of S. japonica powder. The pH, color, viscosity, spreadability, antioxidant activities, and sensory evaluation of the gruel were investigated. Spreadability and pH decreased, whereas viscosity and antioxidant activities increased, with increasing powder content. In addition, color lightness decreased significantly, whereas redness and yellowness increased. In sensory tests, color, aroma, and texture were rated highest for gruel with 5% powder. On the other hand, flavor and overall acceptability were considered optimal in gruel with 7% powder.

We have isolated fractions from Cordyceps militaris and Paecilomyces japonica and investigated their effects on the activity of rat liver cytosolic glucokinase, a key metabolic enzyme involved in carbohydrate metabolism. The dried powder of the C. militaris and P. japonica were successively extracted with ethanol and with 70% ethanol. The residue was exhaustively extracted with hot water. The extract was dialyzed against water, and to the non-dialyzable solution was added 2 volumes of ethanol. The precipitate was collected by centrifugation dispered in water, and lyophilized to afford fraction A. The residue after hot-water extraction was suspended in 5% sodium carbonate. The final residue was suspended in 5% NaOH. The alkaline suspension was purified in a similar manner as described above to afford fraction B. Hepatic glucokinase activities of the fraction A extracted from C. militaris and P. japonica were 371.4 and 379%, respectively. The fraction B was 314.2 and 147.4%. The activity of fraction B of C. militaris extracts was higher than that of P. japonica. Liver cytosolic glucokinase activity of rats fed normal diet supplemented with 0.1% C. militaris was 1316%. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated that C. militaris extracts were able to prevent sudden postprandial peaks in blood glucose as a result of a marked increase in the liver cytosolic glucokinase activities.
