Calibration Methods for the Gas Chromatographic Analysis of ppt-level Hydrogen Sulfide (H2) in Air (환경 대기 중 ppt 수준의 황화수소 분석을 위한 GC 방식의 검량 기법에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the analytical techniques to quantify the ambient concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) in air at ppt concentration level. For this purpose, an on-line GC analytical system equipped with both pulsed-flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption unit (TDU) was investigated by collecting ambient air samples. The results of our study generally indicated that calibration conditions of GC system is highly sensitive to affect the accuracy of the analytical technique. Most importantly. we found that the use of different matrices in the the preparation stage of working standards was sensitive to control the overall performance of this technique. The calibration of our analytical system was tested by the two types of working standard (prepared by mixing either with high purity $N_2$ or with the ambient air). According to this test, the latter represented more efficiently the detecting conditions of actual air samples. The peak occurrence patterns of both air samples and standards (prepared by mixing with ambient air) were altered in a similar manner as the function of the loaded volume; however, it was not the case for the $N_2$-mixed standards. Results of our study suggest that detection of H$_2$S is highly different from other sulfides and that its quantification requires minimiaing interfering effects of non -pure substance (like water vapor) and (either sorptive or destructive) loss effects.

Friction and Wear of Ceramic-Steel Pairs in Boundary-Lubricated and Unlubricated Line-Contact Sliding (경계윤활 및 무윤활 상태에서 선접촉을 하는 세라믹과 강의 마찰과 마멸 특성)

  • The friction and wear behaviors of ceramics against steels with lubricants were investigated and compared with those observed in air. Lubrications wbre done by a water and a commercial engine oil as received. The investigated ceramics were $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$. Steels with 0.2 wt.% C were heat treated to obtain tempered structure. A cylinder-on-plate tribometer with rotated sliding motion was used to carry out the experiments. In the experiments reported here, the ranges of different testing speeds and loads were used. It was found that the friction and wear characteristics of tested pairs were significantly influenced by environments. In water and oil environments the wear of ceramics was reduced from 10$^{-6}$ g/s down to 10$^{-8}$ g/s in dry sliding at the same values of the frictional power which are the products of the friction coefficient, the load and the sliding speed. SiC showed excellent wear resistant behavior in water sliding, which was the lowest among tested ceramics, but it was, very poor in oils. In case of $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the wear rates were very low under oil environment, but the highest in water. The wear rates of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were very low in both lubricating conditions at low values of the frictional power, but high at high values of the frictional power.

Correlation of the Rates of Solvolysis of Diphenylthiophosphinyl Chloride Using an Extended form of the Grunwald-Winstein Equation

  • Rate of solvolysis of diphenylthiophosphinyl chloride in ethanol, methanol, and aqueous binary mixtures incorporating ethanol, methanol, acetone, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) or 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) are reported. Solvolyses were also carried out in TFE-ethanol mixtures. For five representative solvents, studies were made at several temperatures and activation parameters determined. The 29 solvents gave a reasonably precise extended Grunwald-Winstein equation plot, correlation coefficient (R) of 0.933, which improved to 0.983 when the four TFE-ethanol points were excluded. The sensitivities (l = 1.00 and m = 0.64) were similar to those obtained for dimethyl phosphorochloridate and phosphorochloridothionate and diphenylphosphinyl chloride (1). As with the four previously studied solvolyses, an $SN_2$ pathway is proposed for the solvolyses of diphenylthiophosphinyl chloride. The activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$, were determined and they are also in line with values expected for an $S_N2$ reaction.

Protective Effect of Coptidis Rhizoma on SNAP-Induced Cytotoxicity in Pancreatic RINm5F Cells (SNAP 유도성 RINm5F 세포 독성에 대한 황연 추출물의 방어효과)

  • Objectives : Coptidis rhizoma (CR) is an oriental medicine that has been used in many traditional prescriptions against diabetes mellitus in Korea for centuries. Our purpose was to determine the protective effect and its action mechanism of CR on the cytotoxicity of pancreatic -cell line (RINm5F cell). Methods : In this experiment, we used methods such as MTT assay for detection of cytotoxicity, DNA fragmentation assay for detection of apoptotic cell death, LDH activity assay for detection of necrotic cell death, and measurement of $DiOC_{6}$ (3) retention for detection of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Background : Nitric oxide (NO) is believed to playa key role in the process of pancreatic -cell destruction leading to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Results : Exposure of RINm5F cells to chemical NO donor such as S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) induced cytotoxic events such as DNA fragmentation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release into medium. However, pretreatment of RINm5F cells with CR extract ($10~50{\mu\textrm{g}}/ml$) for 3 hours prevented SNAP-induced DNA fragmentation and LDH release into medium through the inhibition of MMP disruption. Conclusions : These results suggest that CR may be a candidate for a therapeutic or preventing agent against IDDM.

  • In the end of a production line a new built power converter has to undergo a series of stress tests. This can be achieved by connecting it to a dynamometer consisting of a three-phase machine joined by a rigid shaft to a DC load machine. The latter is controlled to create some specific load characteristic needed for the test. In this paper a test method is proposed, in which no mechanical equipment is needed. The suggested test stand consists only of a converter to be tested and a simulator converter. Both devices are connected back-to-back on the AC-side via smoothing reactors. The simulator operates in real-time as an equivalent load circuit, so that the device under test will only notice the behaviour of a three-phase machine under consideration of the load.

  • Tungsten silicide는 낮은 전도도, 높은 녹는점, pattern 형성에 용이함등으로 VLSI device Interconnect(Bit line)로 활발하게 이용되고 있다. 일반적으로 Tungsten silicide 는 polycide(WSi$_2$/poly-Si)구조로 사용이 되며, polycide 구조는 산화분위기에서 WSi$_2$위에 SiO$_2$막을 쉽게 형성시키는 장점이 있다. As-dep상태의 polycide를 산화시킬적에는 텅스텐 실리사이드에 존재하는 excess-silicon과 microcrystalline 구조 (grain size=3$\AA$)로 인하여 텅스텐 실리사이드 표면에 균일한 SiO$_2$가 형성이 된다. 그러나 post-anneal을 실시한 샘플 Furnace anneal ($N_2$:O$_2$유량비=2:1) 처리하면 성장된 텅스텐 실사이드 입자의 입계효과에 의하여 텅스텐 실리사이드의 표면에 SiO$_2$뿐만 아니라 WO$_3$가 형성되는 이상산화가 발생되어 공정의 어려움을 야기시키고 있다. 본 실험에서는 post anneal ($700^{\circ}C$, 30min, $N_2$ 분위기) 시킨 시편을 Implantation(As 또는 phosphorous)을 실시하여 실리사이드 표면을 비정질화 시킨후 Furnace anneal 실시하여 이상산화 발생 억제에 I/I처리가 미치는 효과를 관찰하였다. XPS를 이용하여 이상산화막 두께와 WO$_3$존재를 조사하였고, AES를 사용하여 W, Si, O 원소들이 깊이에 따라 변하는 것을 관찰하였다.

Effects of an Ultrasound-assisted Palpation Training Program on Physical therapy Student's Palpation Skills

  • Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of a novel training program that integrates ultrasound technology to enhance the palpation skills of physical therapy students. The program was designed to support students in developing more precise palpation techniques by using ultrasound as a supplementary tool for anatomical identification. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of twenty students, all enrolled in the physical therapy department at S University, who met the specified selection criteria, were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group (EG, n=10) or the control group (CG, n=10). The experimental group participated in an ultrasound-assisted palpation training program, while the control group did not receive this intervention. Results:The experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in their ability to accurately palpate anatomical landmarks, specifically the long head of the biceps brachii (LHBT) and the lateral joint line of the knee (LJLK), as well as an increased level of confidence in their palpation skills (p<0.05). A comparative analysis of changes from pre- to post-training revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the ultrasound-assisted training program can provide valuable educational benefits, offering foundational data to enhance the development of palpation skills in physical therapy students and making a meaningful contribution to educational research within the field.

A Study of Characteristics on Weathering for Decomposed Granite Soils in Cutting Slope (화강토 지반 절취사면의 풍화특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear parameters on cutting slope of weathered granite soils by using small dynamic cone penetration test on the very moment of its cutting. The results were : On the relations among N$\_$c/, Li, and CEC, the condition of Li>6%, CEC>14(meq/100g) corresponds to that of N$\_$c/ values of 2∼30, and 3<CEC<14(meq/100g) to N$\_$c/=30∼50. Comparing the smallest penetration depth from two small dynamic cone penetration tests done at 5m below from the top of the slope on April 15th, October 31t. there was a l0cm difference. So we could find out the degree of weathering on the slope. And dividing the difference by 190 days (the whole testing time), we could know it's being weathered 0.052mm each day. The more N. value increases, the more shear parameters(internal friction angle ; $\phi$, cohesion : c) increase at a standard pressure($\sigma$>32㎪). So the condition of N$\_$c/=2∼50 corresponds to that of $\phi$=27∼50, c=12∼49㎪. From the above testing results, the N$\_$c/ values more correspond to $\phi$ values than c values. In conclusion, this study suggests that on small dynamic cone penetration test a penetration boundary line of 5 centimeters is decided at around Li=4%, CEC=3(meq/100g) which is classified as a strong weathering soil. It also shows that as Li increases CEC increases as well, while N$\_$c/ decreases.

  • 주문형 비디오나 원격 회의 그리고 원격 강의와 같은 멀티미디어 애플리케이션들은 비디오나 오디오와 같은 멀티미디어 트래픽을 유발한다. 이러한 멀티미디어 트래픽의 가장 큰 특성은 폭주성이다. 폭주성은 통신망의 효율을 떨어뜨리는 매우 중요한 요인이며, 따라서 폭주성에 대처할 수 있는 효율적인 대역폭 할당 정책이 통신망 관리에서 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 멀티캐스팅 방식의 온라인 비디오 애플리케이션에 대해서 대역폭 완화 작업이라고 불리우는 효율적이고 유용한 대역폭 할당 방안을 설계하였다. 본 논문에서 제시하는 새로운 대역폭 완화 기법은 비디오 서버에서 이미 전송된 데이타의 특성을 이용하여 대역폭 완화창의 크기를 조절하는 동적인 기법이다. 몇 가지 MPEG 트레이스들로 실험했을 때 기존의 온라인 대역폭 완화 기법과 비슷한 성능을 보이고, 특히 멀티캐스팅 방식의 온라인 비디오 서비스에 대해서는 서버의 자원 효율성을 향상시킴을 알 수 있었다. Abstract All of the multimedia applications such as VOD, teleconferencing, and tele-lecturing invoke multimedia traffic like video or audio traffic. The most important characteristic of these multimedia traffic is the burstiness property. So, bandwidth management is becoming the major part of network management. In this paper, we propose a new and efficient bandwidth management technique called bandwidth smoothing for the multicasting on-line video applications. Our bandwidth smoothing technique reduces as much of the network bandwidth required to transmit on-line video traffic as previously proposed methods, and improves the server's resource utilization especially for the multicast on-line video services.

DIFFUSE [CII] 158 MICRON LINE EMISSION FROM THE INTERSTELLAR MATTER AT HIGH GALACTIC LATITUDE

  • We present the results of an rocket-borne observation of far-infrared [CII] line at 157.7 ${\mu}m$ from the diffuse inter-stellar medium in the Ursa Major. We also introduce a part of results on the [CII] emission recently obtained by the IRTS, a liquid-helium cooled 15cm telescope onboard the Space Flyer Unit. From the rocket-borne observation we obtained the cooling rate of the diffuse HI gas due to the [CII] line emission, which is $1.3{\pm}0.2 {\times} 10^{-26}$ $ergss^{-1} H^{-1}_{atom}$. We also observed appreciable [CII] emission from the molecular clouds, with average CII/CO intensity ratio of 420. The IRTS observation provided the [CII] line emission distribution over large area of the sky along great circles crossing the Galactic plane at I = $50^{\circ}$ and I = $230^{\circ}$. We found two components in their intensity distributions, one concentrates on the Galactic plane and the another extends over at least $20^{\circ}$ in Galactic latitude. We ascribe one component to the emission from the Galactic disk, and the another one to the emission from the local interstellar gas. The [CII] cooling rate of the latter component is $5.6 {\pm} 2.2 {\times}10$.
