The effect of sodium acetate to reduce the fiber damage and hardening of acetate fabrics during alkaline treatment is studied. The optimal condition is controlled concentration 2%, at $50^{\circ}C$ for 6 minutes and at $70^{\circ}C$ for 2 minutes through the result of weight loss, shrinkage and tensile strength. Alkaline treated acetate fabrics under optimal condition show softer than untreated acetate fabrics. Alkaline treatment with sodium acetate brings the reduction in hardening and shrinkage in internal fiber of acetate fabric. Also, alkaline treatment with sodium acetate improves the tensile strength of acetate fabrics compared with only alkaline treatment. The moisture regain of acetate fabrics is also improved by alkaline treatment under optimal condition.
Antimicrobial effect of Lithospermum erythrorhizon extracts against food-borne pathogens was investigated. L. erythrorhizon was extracted with methanol at room temperature, and the extraction was sequentially fractionated using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Antimicrobial activity of L. erythrorhizon extracts was determined using paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. Ethyl acetate extracts of L. erythrorhizon showed the highest activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. Synergistic effect was found in combined extracts of L. erythrorhizon and Sophora subprostrata as compared with each extract alone. Growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of L. erythrorhizon, against S. aureus and S. dysenteriae. Ethyl acetate extract of L. erythrorhizon, showed strong antimicrobial activity against S. aureus at 4,000 ppm, retarding growth of S. aureus more than 48 hr and S. dysenteriae up to 12 hr.

Antimicrobial activities of green tea extracts used for coarse tea were investigated by disc diffusion method using eight different bacteria. Among the green tea extracts, the 70% ethanol extract demonstrated the strongest antimicrobial activities against Vibrio parahemolyticus (V. parahemolyticus) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and thus was further fractionated. Among these fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed the strongest antimicrobial activities against V. parahemolyticus, S. aureus, Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). These activities exceeded that of all extracts and fractions tested in this study. Interestingly, although green tea extracts showed significant antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus (M. luteus), once fractionated, the ethyl acetate fraction did not show any antimicrobial activity against M. luteus. MICs of the ethyl acetate fraction were $5\;\;{\mu}L$/disc against B. subtilis and $3\;{\mu}L$/disc against S. aureus, S. mutans and V. parahaemolyticus. 90% inhibition of B. subtilis was observed with 0.05% ethyl acetate fraction but S. mutans needed over 0.1% ethyl acetate fraction to exhibit the same inhibition as B. subtilis. Antimicrobial activities of ethyl acetate fractions were reduced around 10% by thermal treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. All the results suggest that the 70% ethanol extract as well as the ethyl acetate fraction from green tea used for coarse tea could be further developed into a natural antimicrobial agent.
Porous spheres composed of natural waxes and inorganic materials containing vitamin E acetate as a drug were prepared by impregnation method. Furthermore, the amount of vitamin E acetate entrapped in the spheres and the release rate of vitamin E acetate from the spheres were studied. The impregnation of vitamin E acetate was carried out by dipping the spheres in vitamin E acetate solutions. Entrapment mechanism of vitamin E acetate could be expressed in terms of Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The amount of vitamin E acetate entrapped in porous spheres was influenced by the structure and concentration of the polymer used in vitamin E acetate solutions, and the concentration of vitamin E acetate. Release characteristics of vitamin E acetate from the spheres were investigated by withdrawing samples periodically and analyzing them by spectrophotomer.
This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Cutellaria baicalensis George extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Cutellaria baicalensis George was extracted with methanol at room temperatures, and fractionation of the methanol extracts from Cutellaria baicalensis George was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Cutellaria baicalensis George extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extracts of Cutellaria baicalensis George showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Cutellaria baicalensis George and Portulaca oleracea as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Cutellaria baicalensis George against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The ethyl acetate extract of Cutellaria baicalensis George showed strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of ethyl acetate extract from Cutellaria baicalensis George retarded the growth of S. aureus more than 24 hours and Shigella dysenteriae up to 36 hours. The ethyl acetate extracts of Cutellaria baicalensis George has been shown the antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae.
This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Fraxinus rhynchophylla extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Fraxinus rhynchophylla was extracted with methanol at room temperatures, and fractionation of the methanol extracts from Fraxinus rhynchophylla was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Fraxinus rhynchophylla extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Portulaca aleracea as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The ethyl acetate extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla showed strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of ethyl acetate extract from Fraxinus rhynchophylla retarded the growth of S. aureus more than 24 hours and Shigella dysenteriae up to 36 hours. The ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla has been shown the antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae.
To investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Patrinia scabiosaefolia extracts against food-borne pathogens, we extracted the P. scabiosaefolia with methanol at room temperature and the fractionation of the methanol extracts was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the P. scabiosaefolia extracts was determined by using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extracts of P. scabiosaefolia showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Shigella sonnei. Synergistic effect in inhibition was observed when P. scabiosaefolia extract was mixed Forsythiae fructus extract as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curves were determined by using ethyl acetate extracts of P. scabiosaefolia against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Shigella sonnei. The ethyl acetate extract of P. scabiosaefolia had strong antimicrobial activity against S. sonnei at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. At this concentration, the growth of S. Sonnei was retarded more than 72 hours and up to 48 hours for S. epidermidis. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate extracts of P. scabiosaefolia can be used for the efficient material against the growth of S. epidermidis and S. sonnei.
Lonicerae Flos was extracted with methanol and successively fractionated with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol to investigate their antimicrobial effects against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria using paper disc method. Ethyl acetate extracts of L. Flos showed highest antimicrobial activity against Shigella dysenteriae. Synergistic effect in inhibition was observed when L. Flos extract was mixed with Artemisa capillaris extract as compared to using each extract alone. Growth inhibition curves were determined using ethyl acetate extracts of L. Flos against Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. dysenteriae. Ethyl acetate extract of L. Flos had antimicrobial activity against S. dysenteriae at 3,000 ppm, retarding growth of S. dysenteriae up to 12 hr.

The rates of mass transfer with the alkaline hydrolysis of ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate were measured by using a modified Lewis cell. The rates of mass transfer with chemical reaction were independent of the speed of agitation, and the reaction enhancement factors were independent of the ionic strength. The second order reaction rate constants of ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate could be obtained from an approximate solution of a diffusion equation by film theory, and their values were $0.041m^3/kg\;mol{\cdot}s$ and $0.338m^3/kgmol{\cdot}s$, respectively.

Minimal growth inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of chitosan acetate (M.W. 60 kDa) on heterotrophic bacteria (strains MK1, S, and R) isolated from the soft-rotten tissues of Neungee mushroom (Sarcodon aspratus) were measured. The slimy substance produced by the MK1 strain was responsible for the diseased mushroom’s appearance. The S and R strains were members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex. These strains showed different levels of susceptibility toward chitosan acetate. The MIC of chitosan acetate against the MK1 and S strains was 0.06%. The MIC against the R strain was greater than 0.10%. Survival fractions of the MK1 and S strains at the MIC were $3\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ and $1.4\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ after 24 h, and $2\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ and $7\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ after 48 h, respectively. Survival fractions of the R strain after 24 and 48 hr at 0.1% chitosan acetate were $1\;{\times}\;10^{-2}$ and $6.9\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$, respectively. Compared to the MK1 and S strains, the low susceptibility of the R stain towards chitosan acetate could be due to the ability of the R strain to utilize chitosan as a carbon source. Thirty-eight percent of Neungee pieces treated in a 0.06% chitosan acetate solution for $2{\sim}3$ second did not show any bacterial growth at 4 days, whereas bacterial growth around untreated mushroom pieces occurred within 2 days. These data suggest that chitosan acetate is highly effective in controlling growth of indigenous microorganisms on Neungee. The scanning electron micrographs of the MK1 strain treated with chitosan revealed a higher degree of disintegrated and distorted cellular structures.
