  • Synthetic seismograms and deduced characteristic properties of the non-geometrical $S^*$ and $P^*$ waves are presented. These waves are excited on the free surface or an interface between two different media by an inhomogeneous P wave from a point source nearby, and propagate as homogeneous waves in the media. Synthetic seismograms are computed using an extended reflectivity method designed for buried source and receiver. An efficient computational procedure for propagator matrices of layers is devised to reduce the computational time and the RAM memory size in the implementation of the reflectivity method. Radiation patterns are obtained from the particle motions of the four types of the "*" waves, i.e., the $S^*$ wave generated near the free surface, and the reflected $S^*$, transmitted $S^*$ and transmitted $P^*$ waves generated near an interface. Some patterns show polarity changes of displacements and others reveal monotonic or non-monotonic variation of amplitude depending on the velocity structure. The decaying trend of amplitude with increasing epicentral distance are also shown for the head wave type of the "*" waves.

  • We carry out the numerical simulation to test a hypothesis that freak waves can be triggered by the infragravity waves of bound mode underlying the ever-present swells and its constructive interaction with swells using the Tool Box called the ihFoam that has its roots on the OpenFoam, and Bi-spectrum. Numerical simulation is implemented for the SamChcuk LNG Plant where freak waves have been reported in front of the private wharf during its construction phase due to the uncompleted northern breakwater. Infra-gravity waves of bound mode is generated using the difference wave-wave interaction between the local wind waves of 7 s and a swell of 11.4 s based on the Bi-spectrum. For the sake of comparison, numerical simulation for infra-gravity waves of free mode is also carried out. Numerical results show that stem waves along the private wharf for SamChcuk LNG Plant can be triggered by the infra-gravity waves of bound mode coming from the north, which eventually leads to freak waves when encounters the reflected waves from the south jetty.

  • Abnormally high waves occurring at the east coast of korea were observed at five field measurement stations and their characteristics were analyzed with the use of wind data provided by the Korean Meteorological Administration. The high waves occurred because strong Donghae twister that was developed by extratropical cyclone blew while high swell arrived at the east coast of Korea. At Sokcho, the most northern site among the five measurement stations, maximum gust speed was 63.7 m/s and significant wave height reached at its maximum of 9.69 m with the corresponding peak wave period of 12.8 s. The reason for appearance of the abnormally high waves is that high swell continued while the twister blew strongly. Moreover, the wind direction was the same as the direction of swell propagation, which maximizes the increase of wave height due to superposition of swell and wind-generated waves. On the east coast of Korea, outbreak of this type of storm waves is very probable in winter season so that it is requested to establish a countermeasure of minimizing possible damage caused by the storm waves.

  • The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a photorefractive crystal is considered. The electromagnetic waves(i.e. TE waves and TM, waves) incident upon the crystal at any incident angle are coupled with reflected waves due to the Fresnel's reflectance in the photorefractive crystal. This coupling leads to a nonreciprocal optical transmissivity. About some incident angles, the optical transmissivity of TE and TM waves in regard to the coupling strength is investigated.

  • We have been developing a method to build models for time series using Genetic Programming. The proposed method has been applied to various kinds of time series e.g. computer-generated chaos, natural phenomena, and financial market indices etc. Now we apply the prediction method to time histories of seismic ground motion i.e. one-step-ahead prediction of seismographic amplitude. Waves of earthquakes are composed of P-waves and S-waves. They propagate in different speeds and have different characteristics. It is believed that P-waves arrive firstly and S-waves arrive secondly. Simulations were performed based on real data of Hyuganada earthquake which broke out at southern part of Kyushuu Island in Japan. To our surprise, prediction model built using the earthquake waves in early time can enough precisely predict main huge waves in later time. Lots of experiments lead us to conclude that every slice of data involves P-wave and S-wave. The simulation results suggest the GP-based prediction method can be utilized in alarm systems or dispatch systems in an emergency.

  • The world wide efforts for detecting gravitational waves, the detectors in vogue and the expected astrophysical sources of gravitational waves will be discussed. Ground based detectors especially, the resonant bar detectors and laser interferometers will be described with a brief mention of the space based detector (the LISA project). Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves such as coalescing binaries, supernovae, pulsars/ rotating neutron stars, stochastic background will be discussed in the context of detection.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the surface waves in fibre-reinforced anisotropic thermoelastic medium subjected to gravity field. The theory of generalized surface waves has firstly developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley waves, Rayleigh waves and Love waves. The analytical expressions for displacement components, force stress and temperature distribution are obtained in the physical domain by using the harmonic vibrations. The wave velocity equations have been obtained in different cases. The numerical results are given and presented graphically in Green-Lindsay and Lord-Shulman theory of thermoelasticity. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibrereinforced of the material medium. The results indicate that the effect of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material medium are very pronounced.

  • Generally, it is pointed out that the submerged breakwater with one row can not regulate the long period waves efficiently, because the crown width is very shorter than the wave length of the long period waves. Therefore, the wide crown is needed to raise the controlling efficiency for the long period waves. This study picks up the submerged breakwater with two rows which has smaller construction materials comparing to the one row and discusses the wave controlling function for the long period waves. Judging from the results obtained by using the strict dividing region method, the submerged breakwater with two rows can more regulate the long period waves than one row can, especially, in case that crown width and inner width of its construction come to be wider.

  • For the mechanism of ship capsizing, we can generally consider that it\`s caused due to pure loss of stability, parametric oscillation(low cycle resonance) of ship in waves and the broaching phenomena. Among them, low cycle resonance occurs due to the dynamic change of righting arm with respect to the relative position of ship to waves. The dynamic change depends on the encounter period of a ship in following waves. This paper discusses the following items : (1) An analytical expression of GZ curve varying with respect to the relative position of ship to waves, (2) Non-linear equation of motion describing low cycle resonance, (3) The effects of righting arm, stability range and encounter period on low cycle resonance.
