Investigations were made on the status of women groups on processing activities of agricultural products for the Hyogo prefecture in Japan. The data were analyzed with the Hideyosi for Windows(Version 1.19) and the Econometric View for Quantative Micro Softwere(Version 2.0). The results indicats that many rural women groups have their own experience on the activities of processing agricultural products and many other women groups have gained such experience from the management and establishment of the restaurants and direct sales stores. This kind of systems has influenced the activation of each rural district. Further development of the processing of agricultural products by rural women groups in the future demands better cooperation among diverse groups involved in these establishment centers and consumers. In addition, it is necessary to attract young people and train and upgrade them for successive consumers. (Korean J of Human Ecology 2(1) : 68∼79, 1999)
The purpose of this study was to compare the nutritional status and the immunocompetence of elderly women residing in urban and rural areas. Dietary food records and anthropometric measurements were used to evaluate the nutritional status of subjects. The immune function of subjects was assessed by total and differential white blood cell(WBC) counts. Total B and T Lymphocytes, and T cell subsets were quantified by flow-cytometer. Immunoglobulin G, A, and M concentrations were also measured as an index of humoral immunity. Elderly women in rural area showed a relatively lower dietary intake of total energy, protein, and iron than did urban elderly women. Total WBC, neutrophil counts, eosinophil counts, and the percentage of neutrophils among total leukocytes were significantly higher in urban elderly women than in rural women. Although the numbers of lymphocytes were not significantly different, the percentage of Lymphocytes among total leukocytes as greater in rural elderly women than in urban. Both groups did not show any significant differences in numbers of T cell subsets and NK cells. Immunoglobulin G, A, and M levels were not significantly different between the two groups, but the numbers of subjects placed under the deficient range of immunoglobulins were greater in rural than in urban elderly women. from the present study, it could be suggested that poor nutritional intake may selectively affect the number of immune cells, thereby influencing the immunocompetence of elderly women. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of fashion leaders in relation to attitude toward change and socioeconomic level among Dae Gu woman as well as among rural women living on the suburbs of Dae Gu: and to compare the characteristics of these urban women in a mass society with the rural women living in a traditional society. Measures selected for this study consisted of the Schrank Fashion Opinion Leadership Inventory(1973), the Schrank ana Sugawara Attitudes Toward Change Inventory(1977), and socioeconomic level. The fashion Innovation Inventory was developed by author which consisted of a list of clothing and accessory items selected after surveys to local stores, campus, and main streets, and study of fashion magazines for the current seasons. The data from 280 respondents were analyzed by Pearson corrleation coefficients, analysis of variance, and t-test. The results were as followers : 1) A significant relationship was found between fashion leadership and socioeconomic level for both urban and rural women. High attitude toward change was significantly related to high fashion innovativeness and high fashion opinion leadership among the urban groups. re significant relationship was found between fashion opinion leadership and attitude toward change among the rural sample. 2) A significant difference was found in attitude toward change scores of four urban sub-sample groups : fashion innovators, fashion opinion leaders, fashion innovative communicators(who exhibit high scores on both fashion innovativeness and fashion opinion leader-ship), and non-fashion innovative communicators. No significant difference was found in attitude toward change scores of four rural sub-sample groups. No significant differences were found in socioeconomic level of four sub-sample groups for both urban and rural women.
This study was conducted to compare the dietary factors which influence on the bone status of 28 women in urban and 30 women in rural area. Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline(Hpr) and Calcium(Ca) were measured as biological markers of bone resorption. Mean daily intake levels of total protein, animal protein, total calcium, calcium, calcium from milk and milk products, animal calcium, Ca / P ratio by 24 hr recall method were significantly higher in urban women. However, mean daily sodium(Na) intake levels were not significantly different between two groups. Ca Index score and Na Index score by food frequency methods were also significantly higher in urban than in rural subjects. While urinary Ca excretion elves of two groups were similar, Na excretion levels were significantly higher in rural women. Mean urniary levels of Ca / creatinine(cr) and Hpr / cr as bone status index were within normal range and not significantly different between two groups. However, prevalence of poor bone status as assessed by hydroxyproline was higher in rural women. Na Index, urinary Ca excretion and Ca / cr ratio were significantly correlated with bone status(Hpr / cr) in urban women, while only age was related to bone status in rural women. These demonstrated that high Na intake results in increased urinary excretion of Na and Ca and could cause bone resorption. Multiple regression analysis indicated that Na Index score and age have greater effect than other variables in urban women and only age has greater effect in rural women.
This study aims to examine the determinants affecting rural women's participation in community organizations in rural Korea. The data was collected through interviews with 958 rural women among 1,870 respondents who have lived in Up and Myen as an administrative unit of a rural community, and analyzed by the SPSS/PC Win V.10 program. The statistical method utilized for this study was the hierarchy multiple regression model. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, rural women with a high income, a larger farm, or a fruit farm are more likely to participate in agricultural cooperatives. Second, rural women with a high income, a larger farm, who are engaged in full time forming, and grow fruit and special crops, are more likely to participate in cooperative firms. Third, rural women who are educated and have a larger farm, a fruit farm, and high community attachment are more likely to participate in learning organizations. Fourth, rural women who were educated and have small households are more likely to participate in religious groups. Fifth, rural women with a small farm are more likely to participate in civic organizations. Sixth, there was no significance between all of these variables and participation in political parties.

This study aimed to identify factors that promote participation of rural women in community activities. A total of 466 rural women (effective recovery rate 84.6%) residing in rural areas from October 10 to October 14 in 2016 were surveyed. The main results of the study are as follows. First, the highest participation of rural women in community activities involved women farmers' organizations, which also showed the highest satisfaction. The purpose of their participation in community activities was for community service. Second, there were differences in participation among groups according to individual factors such as age, annual income, and occupation as well as value factors such as sense of community and life satisfaction. Third, with higher age and income and sense of community, rural women were more likely to participate in community activities.
This study aims to examine the socio-demographic heterogeneity of community participation in rural Korea. Data was collected through interviews with 1,870 rural householders and housewives who have lived in Up or Myen as an administrative unit of rural communities, and analyzed by the SPSS/PC Win V.10 program. The statistical techniques used for this study were frequency and percentile. The major findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, the extent to which rural people have participated in community organizations were: cooperative groups, $80.8\%$; religious groups, $20.6\%$; learning groups, $12.7\%$; political groups, $9.8\%;$ civil groups $6.7\%$; and voluntary groups, $5.3\%$. Whereas the numbers were high for community participation in groups related to agricultural production, participation in civil and voluntary groups were lower. Secondly, it showed that people who lived in urbanized and high population density areas were more likely to participate in community groups. The diversity of community organizations was different according to the level of rurality. Thirdly, farm householders were more likely to participate in religious, civil and voluntary groups than non-farm householders. Fourthly, people with higher education, females, those in the 40 to 50 age groups were more likely to participate in community organizations. Fifthly, even though men are more likely to participate in political parties, women were more likely then men to agree that women should participate in political parties. This empirical study could support the results of Sundeen (1988) and Wilson and Musick (1997) in that education was related positively to community participation. In addition, we concluded that community participation in a rural development process has two main considerations: philosophical and pragmatic. This implies that there is room for government to enable and facilitate 'true' community participation. That can be done through policy reform which creates a permissive environment for community decision-making and input, in addition to simply supporting community development through financial assistance.
As rural life has shifted with the long term changes in the internal and external conditions of rural communities, this study aims to investigate the living conditions and life satisfaction of rural women. 70 questionnaires in health, clothing, food, shelter, economic conditions and child-rearing fields were used for a survey of 393 rural women from five rural areas in the northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-Do. Statistical techniques of frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test and regression analysis were employed through 'SPSS Statistics 21'. Participants were divided into 3 groups, with Group A with income less than 15 million won, Group B with income of at least 15 million won and less than 30 million won, and Group C with at least 30 million won. For the life satisfaction and health conditions, Group C showed higher scores than Group A. The food security status of rural women in the research area was worse than that in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and food consumption by Group C was higher than that of Group A and Group B. For the satisfaction of kitchen, bathroom facilities and heating system, the income of 15 million won seemed to be the divisive value where richer groups were more satisfied. Job satisfaction seemed more related with the income amount rather than with the job itself. The parenting efficacy and child-rearing satisfaction were higher for Group C than for Group A. Determinants of life satisfaction turned out to be health conditions, heat susceptibility, fruit consumption, kitchen unit satisfaction, job satisfaction and parenting efficacy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of stress, social support, and marital satisfaction between married immigrant women living in urban areas and women living in rural areas to identify ways to improve their mental health. Methods: Two hundred married immigrant women were recruited from multicultural familysupport centers located in Daejeon City and Chungcheong Province. From July, 2009 to January, 2010, data were collected using self- administered questionnaire. Study instruments were scales for acculturative stress, housewives life stress, support from spouse, and marital satisfaction. Results: Urban married immigrant women had lower levels of acculturative stress and higher levels of support from spouse and more positive marital satisfaction compared to rural women. Both groups reported similar levels of stress in life as a housewife. Factors influencing marital satisfaction in both group were lower levels of acculturative and housewives life stress, higher levels of support from spouse, and living with parents-in-law. Conclusion: Rural married immigrant women may have more problems in adjusting to Korean culture and marriage compared to urban women. Therefore, to improve the physical and psychological wellbeing and marital adjustment of married immigrant women, development of nursing strategies according to area of residence is needed.
This study was performed for the purpose of analyzing the relationship of menopausal symptoms of midlife women between urban area and rural area. A total of 129 midlife women who have lived in seoul, Kyeung ki and Kangwon were selected conveniently and data were collected by structured questionnaire from May to June, 1998. The instruments were the menopausal symptoms scale developed by Neugarten, Ci Sung-Ai & Kim Hy-Eun. Data analysis was done by Chi-square test, ANOVA, t-test. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The mean score for the menopausal symptoms of midlife women was 2.12. Serious menopausal symptoms which could be found in this study were "joint pain and numbness of arm and leg"(2.63), "fatigue and powerlessness"(2.58), "nervousness"(2.44). Over 97.8% of women complained menopausal symptoms. 2. In the relationship between social demographic variables and menopausal symptoms of midlife women were significant difference in urban area and rural area(t=-4.569, P=.000), marriage status(F=4.809, P=.010), education(F=7.359, P=.000), married son and daughter(F=7.359, P=.000), mensturational status(F=5.993, P=.003), and satisfaction to husband(F=9.093, P=.000). 3. In the relationship of menopausal symptoms of midlife women between two groups were statistically significant differences(t=-4.569, P=.000). The mean score of menopausal symptoms of rural women(2.34) were higher than those of urban women(1.85). This study shows the possible implication for nursing intervention of midlife women's health to prevent and relieve menopausal symptoms.
