  • Coastal structures, constructed for preventing coastal slope erosion, often causes the scour on the boundary between the coastal structure and the sea-bed, which might lead to collapse of coastal structures. To prevent the collapse, the usual upright block type coastal structures can be modified to other forms or systems of coastal structures. To validate the performance of the proposed systems, it is necessary to conduct high cost hydraulic experiments. If numerical modeling can be performed prior to the hydraulic experiments and the performance of the proposed systems is analyzed numerically in advance, the expenses can be reduced significantly by optimizing the number of cases for conducting the experiments. In this study, a fluid-structure interaction analysis procedure is proposed for modeling the hydraulic experiments of costal structures using the finite element package, LS-DYNA. As can be found in the usual hydraulic experiments, fluid velocities of potential scour locations are monitored and analyzed in detail for four types of coastal structures, block, step, trapezoid and rubble mound.

  • It was calculated using empirical formulas for the weight of Tetrapod, which was a representative armor unit in the rubble mound breakwater in Korea. As the formulas were evaluated from a curve-fitting with the result of hydraulic test, the uncertainty of experimental error was included. Therefore, the neural network and M5' model tree were used to minimize the uncertainty and predicted the stability number of armor block. The index of agreement between the predicted and measured stability number was calculated to assess the degree of uncertainty for each model. While the neural network with the highest index of agreement have an excellent prediction capability, a significant disadvantage exists that general designers can not easily handle the method. However, although M5' model tree has a lower prediction capability than the neural network, the model tree is easily used by the designers because it has a good prediction capability compared with the existing empirical formula and can be used to propose the formulas like an empirical formula.

  • Scale effects of stability, run-up, run-down and reflection of layered coastal structures are investigated through the experiments with 7 kinds of hydraulic scale models. The occurrence mechanism and the control method of scale effects are also discussed. As a result, it is found that the similarity of permeability of inner layers plays an important role in the occurrence of scale effects, which has been neglected in the most of conventional model tests. To assure the best scale effects for permeable coastal structures, control of Reynolds numbers of the porous media flow in each layer is recommended. It is also found that Reynolds numbers in revetment, filter, and core layer must be greater than $2{\times}10^4$, $3{\times}10^3$, and $1{\times}10^3$, respectively.

  • Tetrapod has been used as the armor blocks of most rubble mound breakwaters constructed in Korea. The Hudson formula has been widely used in the design of breakwater armor blocks in Korea. In the present study, we calculate the load and resistance partial safety factors of the Hudson formula for Tetrapod armors. The partial safety factors were calculated for the typical breakwater cross-sections of 12 trade harbors and 8 coastal harbors in Korea. The mean and standard deviation of them were also calculated. The mean values were compared with the partial safety factors of US Army (2006). The load and resistance factors are slightly smaller and larger, respectively, than the US Army values. However, the overall safety factors obtained by multiplying the load and resistance factors are close to the US Army values. The result of the present study could be used as the basic data to propose authorized partial safety factors in the future.

  • Geosynthetics are generally utilized to restrain the leakage of leachate and other contaminants during the construction of offshore waste landfill. Therefore, geosynthetic-soil interface is formed inevitably. In this study, 2 dimensional numerical analysis is performed to assess the dynamic behaviour of the offshore waste landfill including geosynthetic-soil interface. Offshore waste landfill can be divided into rubble mound revetment and retaining wall types and analyzed on each type. Effective stress analysis is conducted to consider the variation of pore water pressure and axial force and shear displacement of the interface are compared based on the characteristics of seismic frequency. Consequently, retaining wall type demonstrates more stable behavior against liquefaction potential and favorable forces and shear displacement.

  • If the seabed is exposed to high waves for a long period, the pore water pressure may be excessive, making the seabed subject to liquefaction. As the water pressure change due to wave action is transmitted to the pore water pressure of the seabed, a phase difference will occur because of the fluid resistance from water permeability. Thus, the effective stress of the seabed will be decreased. If a composite breakwater or other structure with large wave reflection is installed over the seabed, a partial standing wave field is formed, and thus larger wave loading is directly transmitted to the seabed, which considerably influences its stability. To analyze the 3-D dynamic response characteristics of the seabed around a composite breakwater, this study performed a numerical simulation by applying LES-WASS-3D to directly analyze the wave-structure-soil interaction. First, the waveform around the composite breakwater and the pore water pressure in the seabed and rubble mound were compared and verified using the results of existing experiments. In addition, the characteristics of the wave field were analyzed around the composite breakwater, where there was an opening under different incident wave conditions. To analyze the effect of the changed wave field on the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed, the correlation between the wave height distribution and pore water pressure distribution of the seabed was investigated. Finally, the numerical results for the perpendicular phase difference of the pore water pressure were aggregated to understand the characteristics of the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed around the composite breakwater in relation to the water-structure-soil interaction.

  • A reliability analysis on sliding of monolithic vertical caisson of composite breakwaters is extensively carried out in order to make the basis for the applicability of reliability-based design method. The required width of caisson of composite breakwaters is determined by the deterministic design method including the effect of impulsive breaking waves as a function of water depth, also studied interactively with the results of reliability analyses. It is found that the safety factor applied in current design may be a little over-weighted magnitude for the sliding of caisson. The reliability index/failure probability is also seen to slowly decrease as the water depth increases for a given wave condition and a safety factor. In addition, optimal safety factor can roughly be evaluated by using the concept of target reliability index for several incident waves. The variations of optimal safety factor may be resulted from the different wave conditions. Finally, it may be concluded from the sensitivity studies that the reliability index may be more depended on the incident wave angles and the wave periodsrather than on the bottom slopes and the thickness of rubble mound.

  • In this study, the program was modified by adding the empirical formula of EurOtop (2018) to enable calculation of wave overtopping on armoured slope structures in the FUNWAVE-TVD model using the fully nonlinear Boussinesq equation. The validity of the modified numerical model was verified by comparing it with CLASH data and experiment data for the rubble mound structure. This model accurately reproduced the change in wave overtopping rate according to the difference in the roughness factor of the armoured block, and well reproduced the rate of decrease in wave overtopping rate due to the increase in relative freeboard. The overtopping rate of the armoured slope structures showed significant differences depending on the positioning condition of the armoured blocks. When Tetrapods were placed with regular positioning, the overtopping rate increased significantly compared to when they were placed with random positioning, and it was consistent with when they were placed with Rocks. Meanwhile, when rocks were placed in one row, the wave overtopping rate was greater than when rocks were placed in two rows, which is believed to be due to the influence of the roughness and permeability of the structure's surface.

  • This is the second of a two-part paper which describes comparison of reliability design methods by application to Donghae Harbor Breakwaters. In this paper, Part 2, we deal with sliding of caissons. The failure modes of a vertical breakwater, which consists of a caisson mounted on a rubble mound, include the sliding and overturning of the caisson and the failure of the rubble mound or subsoil, among which most frequently occurs the sliding of the caisson. The traditional deterministic design method for sliding failure of a caisson uses the concept of a safety factor that the resistance should be greater than the load by a certain factor (e.g. 1.2). However, the safety of a structure cannot be quantitatively evaluated by the concept of a safety factor. On the other hand, the reliability design method, for which active research is being performed recently, enables one to quantitatively evaluate the safety of a structure by calculating the probability of failure of the structure. The reliability design method is classified into three categories depending on the level of probabilistic concepts being employed, i.e., Level 1, 2, and 3. In this study, we apply the reliability design methods to the sliding of the caisson of the breakwaters of Donghae Harbor, which was constructed by traditional deterministic design methods to be damaged in 1987. Analyses are made for the breakwaters before the damage and after reinforcement. The probability of failure before the damage is much higher than the allowable value, indicating that the breakwater was under-designed. The probability of failure after reinforcement, however, is close to the allowable value, indicating that the breakwater is no longer in danger. On the other hand, the results of the different reliability design methods are in fairly good agreement, confirming that there is not much difference among different methods.
