  • This paper is to study the examples for rubber damage and weaken reliability of timing belt, constant velocity joint boot and weather strip in vehicle. The first example, when the service man replaced the new timing-belt of rubber material, he assembled the belt that was weaken it's contact surface because of material transform. He knew the abnormally tearing failure by friction action between belt and sprocket. The second example, it certified the fact that the grease is leaked out boot protecting of constant velocity joint by split of rubber surface because of durability badness. The third example, the weather stripe took the minutely tearing because of damage produced the material transform by crack of chemistry change. It certified the production phenomenon of a tiny noise by coming with outside air because of overlapped the rubber of weather stripe when driving after closing the door. Therefore, the driver must always manage the rubber system part of vehicle.

The Influence of Plasma Surface Modification on Frictional Property of Natural Rubber Vulcanizates

  • The plasma surface modification of natural rubber vulcanizate was carried out using chlorodifluoromethane in a radio-frequency (13.56 MHz) electrodeless bell type plasma reactor. The modification was qualitatively assessed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The frictional force of the plasma-treated surface was found to decrease with the time of plasma treatment. An increase in the surface polarity, as evidenced by the decrease in contact angle of a sessile drop of water and ethylene glycol on the natural rubber vulcanizate surface, was noted with the plasma modification. In the case of similar plasma treatment of glass surface, only a reduction in the polarity was observed. The use of geometric and harmonic mean methods was found to be useful to evaluate the London dispersive and specific components of surface free energy. Irrespective of the method used for evaluation, an increasing trend in the surface free energy was noted with increasing plasma treatment time. However, the harmonic mean method yielded comparatively higher values of surface free energy than the geometric mean method. The plasma surface modification was found to vary the frictional coefficient by influencing the interfacial, hysteresis and viscous components of friction in opposing dual manners.

  • A certain amount of MBS rubber was added to improve toughness of PVC which has a strong tendency of being brittle, producing a mixture, PVC/MBS, from which test specimens were prepared. PVC has strong chemical resistance, oil resistance, frame retardancy and high mechanical strength. Also, it is relatively inexpensive to produce, but shows weakness to impact and difficult for processing. MBS, a typical toughening agent for PVC is generally known, when added in a small amount, to improve impact resistance and to minimize difficulties during the processing of the PVC without adversely affecting the positive aspects of the PVC. In this investigation, attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic and damping constants of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. Generally, the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease while the damping capacity improves when MBS rubber was added.

  • 지금까지 대형 구조물에 널리 사용되고 있는 Base Isolator는 특히, 지진하중에 대하여 상부 구조물의 지반분리(base isolation)을 이용한 지진제어를 목적으로 하기 때문에 Seismic Isolator라 한다. 일반적으로 면진베어링에는 LRB(Laminated Rubber Bearing) 방식과 R-FBI(resilient-friction base isolator) 방식으로 크게 나눌 수 있다. LRB 방식은 가장 널리 사용되는 면진베어링으로써 방진고무를 주된 재료로 하고 수직강성을 보강하기 위하여 steel plate를 조합하여 제작하며, 초기강성 및 에너지 소산능력을 증가시키기 위하여 단면중앙에 납(lead plug)를 삽입하기도 한다. R-FBI 방식은 방진고무 적층판 내부에 미끄럼판을 가지고 있으므로 LRB 방식에 비하여 더 큰 수평변위를 발생시킬 수 있다. 이번에 설계 제작한 면진베어링은 LNG 저장탱크의 Seismic Isolation을 목적으로 적용대상의 사양에 맞추어 설계 제작하고 성능평가 시험을 수행하여 LNG 저장탱크, 원자로, 대형 건축물등 지진으로부터 보호되어야 하는 대형구조물의 방진재로 적용할 수 있는가를 평가하고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 제작된 면진베어링의 설계를 검증하고 방진고무(HDR)재료의 물리적 특성시험, 축소모델에 의한 정적, 동적시험을 통하여 시험방법을 소개하고 이러한 시험결과를 기초로 하여 면진베어리의 성능을 평가하였으며, 면진베어링의 온도변화, 외부 수직하중의 변화등에 따른 특성변화와 LNG 저장탱크와 면진베어링의 체결방법에 따른 시험으로 체결방법을 검증하였으며, 대상물의 사양에 적합한가를 고찰하였다.

Efficient optimal design of passive structural control applied to isolator design

  • Typical base isolated buildings are designed so that the superstructure remains elastic in design-level earthquakes, though the isolation layer is often quite nonlinear using, e.g., hysteretic elements such as lead-rubber bearings and friction pendulum bearings. Similarly, other well-performing structural control systems keep the structure within the linear range except during the most extreme of excitations. Design optimization of these isolators or other structural control systems requires computationally-expensive response simulations of the (mostly or fully) linear structural system with the nonlinear structural control devices. Standard nonlinear structural analysis algorithms ignore the localized nature of these nonlinearities when computing responses. This paper proposes an approach for the computationally-efficient optimal design of passive isolators by extending a methodology previously developed by the authors for accelerating the response calculation of mostly linear systems with local features (linear or nonlinear, deterministic or random). The methodology is explained and applied to a numerical example of a base isolated building with a hysteretic isolation layer. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach is shown to be significant for this simple problem, and is expected to be even more dramatic for more complex systems.

  • This study analyzed the mechanical characteristics and evaluated their subsequent performance for two types of seals which reinforced characteristics with lower friction and anti-wear functions among the foremost important features in the automotive engine seals; one with the addition of glass fiber to PTFE(Polytetrafluoro ethylene); the other with the addition of self-lubricant molybdenumin addition to the glass fiber. Based on the configuration design of seal installed to the front part in the automotive engine, this study carried out interpretations on the stress and reaction for those two types of oil seals to compare the maximum stress and contact load generated from the seal steel, rubber and PTFE lip. This study also verified the stress concentration and anti-wear performance through the coefficient of friction, torque and durability test by producing two types of PTFE seals actually.

Analysis of Joining Strength in Electromagnetic Joining of Metals to High Toughness Polymers (금속과 고분자 재료의 접합강도 해석)

  • Electromgnetic joining of aluminum alloy tubes to high toughness polyurethane rubber cores is studied in order to estimate the joining strength and to analyze the effect of the process variables. The equation which can estimate the joining strength is proposed under considering the elastic recovery of the polyurethane core and the radial shrinkage of the core by pulling it axially. The obtained results are as follows : 1) The joining strength is mainly dependent on the magnitude of residual elastic strain of the polyurethane core. 2) The radial shrinkage (residual strain reduction) of the core during the axial pulling causes the joining strength to decrease severely. The equation for the reduced axial strength is proposed and it is found that the estimated values agree well with experimental results. 3) The magnitude of radial shrinkage could be reduced for the smaller value of ratio l/r. 4) The joining strength in metal/polymer joining increases as the friction coefficient increases. But its effect of friction coefficient is insignificant in comparison with the case of metal/metal joining.

Design of a piezovibrocone and calibration chamber

  • This paper presents the details of indigenous development of the piezovibrocone and calibration chamber. The developed cone has a cylindrical friction sleeve of $150cm^2$ surface area, capped with a $60^{\circ}$ apex angle conical tip of $15cm^2$ cross sectional area. It has a hydraulic shaker, coupled to the cone penetrometer with a linear displacement unit. The hydraulic shaker can produce cyclic load in different types of wave forms (sine, Hover sine, triangular, rectangular and external wave) at a range of frequency 1-10 Hz with maximum amplitude of 10 cm. The piezovibrocone can be driven at the standard rate of 2 cm/sec using a loading unit of 10 ton capacity. The calibration chamber is of size $2m{\times}2m{\times}2m$. The sides of the chamber and the top as well as the bottom portions are rigid. It has a provision to apply confining pressure (to a maximum value of $4kg/cm^2$) through the flexible rubber membrane inlined with the side walls of the calibration chamber. The preliminary static as well as dynamic cone penetration tests have been done sand in the calibration chamber. From the experimental results, an attempt has been made to classify the soil based on friction ratio ($f_R$) and the cone tip resistance ($q_c$).

A Study on the Estimation of Separation Forces of a Power Steering Hose Assembly (동력조향장치 호스 조립품의 이탈력 추정에 관한 연구)

  • The power steering hose assembly is usually manufactured through the swaging process, which is conducted to connect a hose with metal fittings. In this process the hose is inserted into metal components, the sleeve and the nipple, and compressed in the radial direction by the jaws to clamp the hose with metal components. In case that the clamping force is small, the oil in the hose can leak locally under the severe operating conditions. To confirm the clamping force requirements, the measurement of separation force in longitudinal direction of the hose is usually performed. In this study, the swaging process of a hose is simulated with the finite element method, to investigate the effect of friction coefficient on the separation fDrce. The results interpretations are ffcused on the inner rubber component, and also a formula is proposed to estimate the separation farces with respect to friction coefficients.

  • This paper reported test of full-scale cables attached with four types of dampers: viscous damper, passive Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper, friction damper and High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper. The logarithmic decrements of the cable with attached dampers were calculated from free vibration time history. The efficiency ratios of the mean damping ratios of the tested four dampers to theoretical maximum damping ratio were derived, which was very important for practical damper design and parameter optimization. Non-ideal factors affecting damper performance were discussed based on the test results. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness were discussed in detail and compared theoretically. Approximate formulations were derived and verified using numerical solutions. The critical values for non-dimensional concentrated mass coefficient and negative stiffness were identified. Efficiency ratios were approximately 0.6, 0.6, and 0.3 for the viscous damper, passive MR damper and HDR damper, respectively. The efficiency ratio for the friction damper was between 0-1.0. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness on cable damping were positive as both could increase damping ratio; the concentrated mass was more effective than negative stiffness for higher vibration modes.
