The seismic responses of a base Isolated Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR) are investigated using a mathematical model which expresses the superstructure as a linear lumped mass-spring and the seismic Isolator as an equivalent spring-damper. Time history analyses are performed for the 1940 El Centre earthquake with linear amplification. In the analysis 5% of structural damping is used for the superstructure. The effects of high damping rubber bearing on seismic response of the superstructure in base isolated system are evaluated for four stiffness model types. The acceleration responses in base isolated PWR superstructure with high damping rubber bearings are much smaller than those in fixed base structure. In the higher strain region where stiffness behaves non-linearly, the acceleration responses modelled by one equivalent stiffness are smaller than those in nonlinear spring model, and the higher stiffness spring model of isolator exhibits larger peak acceleration response at superstructure in the frequency range above 2.0 Hz. when subjected to linearly amplified 1940 El Centre earthquake.

Base isolation is an innovative design strategy that provides a practical alternative for the seismic design of structures. Base isolators, mainly employed to isolate large structures subjected to earthquake ground excitations and to rehabilitate structures damaged by past earthquakes, deflect and absorb the seismic energy horizontally transmitted to the structures. This study demonstrated that the base isolation system may offer effective performance for bridges during severe seismic events through shaking table tests. Two base isolation systems using laminated rubber bearings with and without hydraulic dampers are tested. The test results strongly show that the laminate rubber bearings cause the natural period of the bridge structure increased considerably, which results in the deck acceleration and the shear forces on the deck acceleratino and the shear forces on the piers reduced significantly. The results also demonstrate that the hydraulic dampers enhance the system's capacity in dissipating energy to reduce the relative displacement between the bridge deck and the pier.
Due to their low intrinsic damping, stay cables in cable-stayed bridges have often exhibited unanticipated and excessive vibrations which result in increasing maintenance frequency and disruption to normal operations of the entire bridges. Mitigation of undesired cable vibration can be achieved by attaching an external damping device near the anchorage. High Damping Rubber (HDR) dampers have many advantages such as compact size, better aesthetics, easy maintenance, temperature stability, and cost benefits; therefore, they have been widely used to increase cable damping. Although a single damper has been shown to reduce cable vibrations, it is not the most effective method due to geometric constraints. This paper proposes the use of two HDR dampers to improve effectiveness and robustness in suppressing cable vibration. Oscillation parameters of the cable-dampers system were investigated in detail by modeling the stay cable as a taut string and each HDR damper as complex-valued impedance and by using an analytical formulation of the complex eigenvalue problem. The problem of two HDR dampers arbitrarily located along a cable is solved and the solution is discussed. Asymptotic formulas to calculate the damping ratios of the cable with two HDR dampers installed near the anchorage(s) are proposed and compared with the exact solutions. Further, a design example is presented in order to justify the methodology. The results of this study show that when the two HDR dampers are installed close to each other on the same end of the cable, some interaction between the dampers leads to reduced damping ratio. When the dampers are on the opposite ends of the cable, they are effective in increasing damping ratio and can provide better vibration reduction to multiple modes.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the dynamic properties of DUS (damping-up system) composed of the materials with excellent damping capacity, and to compare with those of the conventional hangar bolt. The main parameters are the type and hardness (𝜂H), of rubber and the prestress force (value converted from the compression strain (𝜂R) in the stress-strain relationship of rubber). The dynamic properties were examined from the natural frequency (𝜔n), maximum response acceleration (Am), amplification coefficient (𝛼p), maximum relative displacement (𝚫m), and damping ratio (𝜉D). The test results showed that the Am, 𝛼p, and 𝚫m values of DUS were 46.3%, 46.6% and 62.9% lower, respectively, and the 𝜉D value was 3.89 times higher, when compared to those of the conventional hangar bolt. In particular, the 𝛼p value was 1.3 for DUS, and 2.45 for the conventional hanger bolt, which were similar to those of rigid and flexible components specified in KDS 41 17 00, respectively. Consequently, in the optimal details of DUS, the 𝜂H values of 50 and 45 were required for the NR (natural rubber) and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), and the 𝜂R value of 5% was also recommended.

As for the marine propulsion shafting system using 4 stroke diesel engine, it is common to apply a reduction gear box between diesel engine and shafting to increase propulsion efficiency, which requires inevitably a certain elastic coupling to avoid chattering and hammering inside of gear box. In this study, the optimum method of rectifying propulsion shafting system in case of 750 ton fishing vessel is theoretically studied in a view of dynamic characteristics of torsion. After the replacement of diesel engine and gear box, the torsional vibration get worse and so some countermeasures are needed. The elastic coupling is modified from a present rubber coupling of block type having relatively high torsional stiffness to a rubber coupling haying two serially connected elements. Torsional vibration damper was installed at crankshaft free end additionally and moment of inertia of flywheel was adjusted. The dynamic characteristics of shafting system was improved by these modification. The theoretical analysis of torsional vibration are compared to measurement results using two laser torsion meters during the sea trial.

Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using hysteretic damper is shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. A mechanical model is determined that can effectively portray the behavior of a typical E-shape device. Comparison with experimental results for a hysteretic damper indicates that the model is accurate over a wide range of operating conditions and adequate for analysis. The seismic performance of hysteretic dampers are studied and compared with the conventional systems as a base isolation system. A five-story building is modeled and the seismic performance of the systems subjected to three different earthquake is compared. The results show that the hysteretic damper system can provide superior protection than the other systems for a wide range of ground motions.

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause serious problems in cable-stayed bridges. Externally attached dampers have been used to provide an effective means to suppress the vibration of relatively short stay-cables. For very long stay-cables, however, such damper systems are rendered ineffective, as the dampers need to be attached near the end of cables for aesthetic reasons. This paper investigates a new control system to mitigate the cable vibration. The proposed control system which consists of a laminated rubber bearing and an internal damper may be installed inside of the cable anchorage. A simple analytical model of the cable-damper system is developed first based on the taut string representation of the cable. The response of a cable with the proposed control system is obtained and then compared to those of the cable with and without an external passive damper. The proposed stay-cable vibration control system is shown to perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges for mitigation of rain-wind induced vibration of stay-cables.

In this study, a transfemoral prosthesis system of which both stance phase and swing phase are controllable has been developed for the recovery of the biomechanical function of the amputated leg. It consists of a 5 bar link mechanism, a hydraulic-rubber knee damper for stance phase control and a pneumatic cylinder controlled via a microprocessor for stance phase control. The mechanical characteristics of the knee damper which absorbs the impact energy generated at the heel contact were investigated. The characteristics of the pneumatic cylinder essential for the speed adaptation of the prosthesis during swing phase were also studied for its mechanical characteristics. The prosthesis was subject to the clinical tests, and the gait characteristics obtained were very close to those of normal subjects. The stance and swing controlled prosthesis that were developed in this study showed good stability during the stance phase and showed good controllability during the swing phase.

Chatter is a relative vibration between workpiece and tool in machining of metals, and is an important limiting factor of production rate and surface quality, and also reduces the life of machine-tool itself and its tool. In this study, in order to suppress the machining chatter, the spring and the rubber damper are adopted to the tool post of a lathe. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows. 1. The spring and the damper employed in the tool post for the suppression of chatter increase the maximum chatter-free depth of cut and optimum values found for spring constant and compressive strain are 95kg/mm, 0.1954 respectively. 2. On the optimum condition resulting in this experimental study, the modified tool post increased 6 times in the maximum chatter-free depth of cut as compared with the conventional tool post.

A fracture of hand held device, such as radio, TV and CD-RW drive, mainly occurs due to drop situation. For CD-RW drive, the need of high reading/writing speed in conjunction with low price accelerates the fracture of the device. Computer simulation can reduce the period of development and enhance impact characteristic of device. In this study, the detailed finite element model of CD-RW drive was developed to predict the damage under drop conditions. Material property for shock absorbing damper was obtained from tensile test of raw material. A MOONEY-RIVLIN type rubber in LS-DYNA was used as the material model of damper. To assess the reliability of the developed model, drop test at 200G-2msec and 150G-10msec condition was conducted and acceleration at pick-up was compared.
