PtRuW/C catalysts were prepared with the different molar ratios of Pt : Ru : W and their compositions were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The uniform distribution of particles was observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An average crystalline size of 3.5~5.5 nm was calculated based on x-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The electrochemical properties such as electrochemically active surface areas, current densities, specific activities and poisoning rates, were analyzed via CO stripping, linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry. From the analysis, we observed that ternary alloy catalysts, except $PtRu_2W_2/C$, have higher current densities, specific activities and stabilities than those of commercial binary catalysts. Among all in-house catalysts, Pt5Ru4W/C showed the highest specific activity of $121.05mA{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and the lowest poisoning rate of $0.01%{\cdot}s^{-1}$.

The steam reforming of methane over Ru-promoted $Ni/Al_2O_3$ was carried out. Compared with $Ni/Al_2O_3$, which needs pre-reduction by $H_2$, $Ru/Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts exhibited relatively higher activity than conventional $Ni/Al_2O_3$. According to $H_2-TPR$ of reduced or used catalysts and $CH_4-TPR$, it was revealed that the reduction of $RuO_x$ by $CH_4$ decomposition begins at a lower temperature ($220^{\circ}C$) and the reduced Ru facilitates the reduction of NiO, and leads to self-activation. To improve metal dispersion, the catalyst was soaked in 7 M aqueous $NH_4OH$ for 2 h at $45^{\circ}C$ while stirring. As a result, $Ru/Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with aqueous $NH_4OH$ treatment have higher activity, larger metal surface area (by $H_2$-chemisorption), and small particle size (by XRD and XPS). It is noted that the amount of noble metal could be reduced by aqueous $NH_4OH$ treatment.
Electrodes using for the anode electrode of direct methanol fuel cell with Pt/C and Pt/Ru/C catalyst were prepared and characterized by SEM, TEM, thermal analysis and electrochemical analysis. The half cell tests were carried out with 1 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte and 1 M $CH_3OH$ in order to evaluate the electrode performance. The employed electrochemical methods were cyclic vol-tammetry and potentiodynamic polarization experiments. It was found that 20 w% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in catalyst showed the best performance due to the best platinum utilization on PTFE-containing catalyst layer. It was found that Pt/Ru/C binary catalyst inhibited the poisoning of anode electrode showing improved performance compared to the Pt/C catalyst by the adsorption of oxygen containing species on the electrode surface at same time. The apparent activation energy for methanol oxidation on the Pt/Ru/C and Pt/C catalyst layer was 11.60 kJ/mol and 26.85 kJ/mol, respectively.

The characteristics of nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition were studied to utilize the nitrous oxide as a propellant. The Ru and Pt were selected as nitrous oxide decomposition catalysts and loaded in the $Al_2O_3$ support using an impregnation method. The nitrous oxide conversions as a variation of GHSV and reaction temperature were measured in a tubular reactor. At the low GHSV and high temperature, the conversion was increased, and Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed better performance than Pt/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst.

Steam reforming of tar produced from biomass gasification was conducted using several Ni-based catalysts. In labscale, the catalytic steam reforming of toluene which is a major component of biomass tar was studied. A fixed bed reactor was used at various temperatures of 400-800 ℃. Ru (0.6 wt%) and Mn or K (1 wt%) were applied as a promoter in Ni based catalysts. Generally, Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 catalyst shows higher performance on steam reforming of toluene than Ni/Ru-Mn/Al2O3 catalyst. Used catalysts were analyzed by XRD and TGA to detect sintering and carbon deposition. Base on the lab-scale studies, the monolith and pellet type catalysts were tested in 1 ton/day scale biomass gasification system. Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 monolith catalyst shows high tar reforming performance at high temperature. In addition, Ni/Ru-Mn/Al2O3 monolith catalyst was showed deactivation with operation time. Reforming performance of Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 pellet catalyst which showed 66.7% tar conversion at 587 ℃ was compared to regenerated one. Overall, Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 pellet catalyst shows higher stability and performance than other used catalysts.
Small amounts of CO in reformate fuel gas effectively block platinum catalysts by strong adsorption on the platinum surface at the operation temperature of $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ in PEMFC. To oxidate CO, Ru/C layer (CO filter) was placed between Pt/C layer and GDL (gas diffusion layer) in this study. Ru/C filter provided good CO-tolerant PEMFC anode, but decreased the performance of unit cell about 10% at 0.6 V due to mass transfer resistance from Ru/C filter thickness and increase of charge transfer resistance. Membrane degradation is one of the most important factors limiting the life-time of PEMFCs. Membrane durability would be dependent on the electrode catalyst type. It seemed that Ru catalyst layer would shorten the life time of PEMFC as enhanced the fluoride emission rate of membrane in acceleration test.

In this study, a Cu/hexaaluminate catalyst was prepared by a co-precipitation method, and then a binder was added to form a pellet. A catalyst in which Ni and Ru promoters were added to a Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst was prepared. This study focused on examining the effect of the addition of Ni and Ru promoters on the properties of Cu/hexaaluminate catalysts and the decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellants. Cu/hexaaluminate catalysts had few micropores and well-developed mesopores. When Ru was added as a promoter to the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst, the pore volume and pore size increased significantly. In the thermal decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellant, the decomposition onset temperature was 170.2 ℃. Meanwhile, the decomposition onset temperature was significantly reduced to 93.5 ℃ when the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst was employed. When 1% or 3% of Ru were added as a promoter, the decomposition onset temperatures of ADN-based liquid monopropellant were lowered to 91.0 ℃ and 83.3 ℃, respectively. This means that the Ru promoter is effective in lowering the decomposition onset temperature of the ADN-based liquid monopropellant because the Ru metal has excellent activity in the decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellant, simultaneously contributing to the increase of the pore volume and pore size. After the thermal treatment at 1,200 ℃ and decomposition of ADN-based liquid monopropellant were repeatedly performed, it was confirmed that the addition of Ru could enhance the heat resistance of the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst.

Catalytic hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes by RuH(NO)$L_3$ ($L_3$: $PPh_3$, PhP($CH_2CH_2PPh_2$)$_2$(etp)) was investigated to examine the reaction mechanism and the competence of hydridonitrosyl complexes as catalysts for organic synthesis. RuH(NO)$L_3$ showed catalytic activity for the hydrogenation and the activities of catalysts were dependent on the steric and electronic factors. The less the steric demands of the substrates become, the more activity the catalysts show. For the electronic effect, the more the partial positive charge on the carbonyl carbon atom in ketones becomes and the more the double bond character of carbonyl group in aldehydes becomes, the more active the catalysts are. These results reflect the difference of reaction mechanisms of two substrates, ketones and aldehydes. Catalytic activities of RuH(NO)(etp) and RuH(NO)($PPh_3$)$_3$ in the presence of extra $PPh_3$ toward hydrogenation showed the existence of a reaction pathway accompanied with the change of the bonding modes of NO ligand. The roles of excess $PPh_3$ change with increase of the mole ratio of $PPh_3$ to catalysts; prevention of ligand dissociation from comlexes → bases → ligands. The activity of RuH(NO)(etp) was lower than that of RuH(NO)($PPh_3$)$_3$ toward the hydrogenation of the same substrates mainly due to the structural difference. These catalysts showed the selectivity toward olefin hydrogenation over carbonyl groups in the competitive reaction.
Cryogel and aerogel Pt-Ru/C were synthesized by the sol-gel process for the electrooxidation of methanol. From XRD analysis, it was found that the catalysts had highly dispersed Pt-Ru alloys on carbon support although high temperature treatments have been conducted. Electrocatalytic activities of 3 type aerogel catalysts were investigated in half cell experiments by cyclic voltammetry. Among them, Phloroglucinol-Formaldehyde(PF) type catalyst shows the highest activity. From the results of deactivation test for each catalysts, the aerogel catalysts are found to have excellent durability compared with those prepared by colloidal method.
In this study, noble metals (Pd, Ru, Ir) were supported to $TiO_2$ catalyst. In order to distribute metals uniformly, $H_2O-H_2$ pretreatment technique was used. Xylene, toluene, and MEK were used as reactants. The monometallic or bimetallic catalysts were prepared by the excess wetness impregnation method and were characterized by XRD, and XPS analysis. Pd-Ru, Pd-Ir bimetallic catalysts had multipoint active sites which improved the range of Pd metal state. Bimetallic catalysts had a higher conversion of VOCs than that of monometallic one. The effect of $H_2O-H_2$ pretreatment technique was the enhancement of uniform distribution of Pd particles and promotion of catalytic efficiency. In this study, addition of Ru and Ir metals to Pd promoted oxidation conversion of VOCs. In addition, $H_2O-H_2$ pretreatment promoted removal efficiency of VOCs on the $TiO_2$ support.
