  • Small-sized axial fans are used as air coolers for electric equipment. There is a strong demand for higher power of fans according to the increase of quantity of heat from electric devices. Therefore, higher rotational speed design is conducted, although, it causes the deterioration of the efficiency and the increase of noise. Then, the adoption of contra-rotating rotors for small-sized fans is proposed for the improvement of the performance. In the case of contra-rotating rotors, blade row distance between the front and the rear rotors influences on the performance and the noise. Therefore, it is important to clarify the optimum blade row distance between front and rear rotors. The performance curves of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan under the condition of different blade row distances are shown and the blade row interaction between the front and the rear rotors are discussed by the numerical results. Furthermore, the optimum blade row distance of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan is considered.

  • Although two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) has been shown to be successful in face recognition system, it is still very sensitive to illumination variations. To reduce the effect of these variations, texture-based techniques are used due to their robustness to these variations. In this paper, we explore several texture-based techniques and determine the most appropriate one to be used with 2DPCA-based techniques for face recognition. We also propose a new distance metric computation in 2DPCA called Row Assembled Matrix Distance (RowAMD). Experiments on Yale Face Database, Extended Yale Face Database B, AR Database and LFW Database reveal that the proposed RowAMD distance computation method outperforms other conventional distance metrics when Local Line Binary Pattern (LLBP) and Multi-scale Block Local Binary Pattern (MB-LBP) are used for face authentication and face identification, respectively. In addition to this, the results also demonstrate the robustness of the proposed RowAMD with several texture-based techniques.

  • In a previous paper, we have examined the effects of nozzle configuration and jet to jet spacing on the heat transfer of 1 row of circular water jets. In this paper, experiments have been conducted to obtain the effects of nozzle to target plate distances on the heat transfer of 1 row of 3 jets and 1 row of 5 jets. The nozzle configurations are Cone type, Reverse cone type and Vertical circular type. Nozzle to target plate distance H was varied from 16 mm(H/D=2) to 80mm(H/D=10). For fixed value of mass flow rate and nozzle to target plate distance, larger values of average Nusselt number were obtained for the smaller jet to jet spacing. For the array of water jets, the average heat transfer was decreased slightly with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at low jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$=3 m/s. However, except for $\textrm{V}_{o}$=8 m/s of 1 row of 5 jets, it was increased with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at high jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$$\geq$6m/s. We proposed to apply the nozzle configuration of maximum average heat transfer to each nozzle to target plate distance for 1 row of 3 jets, and, it was Reverse cone type nozzle for 1 row of 5 jets(Reynolds number$\geq$36000).

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum number of inter-rows according to distance of drainage furrow (DF) for running-off excessive-water stress (EWS) in paddy field. The most soil water potential was shown in high ridge (distance of DF by 70 cm) cultivation and the soil water potential showed increasing tendency in over four inter-rows cultivation by DF. The growth of soybean reduced by extended inter-row and its reducing level was high, especially, over four inter-rows (DF distance by 2.8 m) because of EWS. The photosynthetic rate decreased in the more extensive field by distance of DF at V5 and R2 stages, especially, in over four interrows cultivation. Also, root activity decreased at wider DF. The yield was reduced with wider distance of DF more extensively, the highest yield of 270 g per $m^2$ at the every row, but yield showed decreasing tendency at over the $4^{th}$ row (2.8 m) cultivation. Soybean cultivation in paddy field could be founded with DF of every other or $4^{th}$ row.

  • In order to simulate wake of stator and a gas turbine engine's balde row, acryl cylinder and a linear turbine cascade were used respectively in this study. Experimental of heat transfer distributions was done on the passage endwall and blade suction surface. Temperature distributions on the experimental regions were obtained through image processing system by using the cholesteric type liquid crystal which has chain structure of metyl$(CH_3)$. To represent the degree of heat transfer, dimensionless St number was used. The results show that heat transfer on the blade suction surface was increased due to the wake from the cylinder and was decreased as the distance between cylinder row and blade row increases. Because of groth of passage vortex, heat transfer distributions on the trailing edge area showed triangular shape which was little changed with wake. On the other hand, heat transfer on the passage endwall was decreased due to the wake from cylinder. As the distance between cylinder row and blade row increases, heat transfer was more decreased.

  • Spraying method from the paddy-field levee is known to give insufficient penetration of the spray droplets to the rice stem of the densely grown plants, which is generally encountered at the last stage of rice growth. This study was intended to investigate the spraying system to solve this existing problem. As an approach, it was attempted to develop the boom-with-nozzle, between-the-row application system. Several types of nozzles and their different arrangements in the boom were tested in the field to measure the penetration-reaching distance and the uniformity of spray droplet distribution. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Field experiments by the spraying method from the paddy-field levee showed to have practically no penetration of the spray droplets to the portion of the plant stem with the normal flow volume generally applied and thus need for improving present spraying method. 2. It was found that, considering both the uniformity of the spray droplet distribution and performance rate, the most efficient type of nozzle in the between-the-row boom-type spraying system was one that has core-insert hollow-cone with some clearance between the cone and tip. 3. When tested by applying the spraying method of between-the-row, the nozzle pressure did not affect the uniformity of spray droplet distribution. However, the nozzle pressure had a positive effect on the penetrating-reaching distance of the facing side of the rice stem and did not affect much on that of the opposite face of the stem. It was also found that the maximum pressure to affect the penetration-reaching distance was about $10kg/cm^2$. 4. The uniformity of the spray droplet distribution in the between-the-row system was greatly affected by the height and orientation of the nozzles in the boom. Based on experimental work for the different type of the boom-with-nozzle arrangements, it is recommended that the position of nozzle is set at about 0.45 m above the ground and two nozzles in the boom are oriented to be faced with each other with some angle such that the droplet stream from the nozzle would not directly face with each other.

  • Recently, not only Korea but also the world has been suffering from problems related to coastal erosion. The hard defense method has been primarily used as a countermeasure against erosion. However, this method is expensive and has environmental implications. Hence, interest in other alternative methods, such as the eco-friendly vegetation method, is increasing. In this study, we aim to analyze the hydraulic characteristic of submerged rigid vegetation according to the cross-sectional change through a hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation. From the hydraulic experiment, the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient, and energy dissipation coefficient were analyzed according to the density, width, and multi-row arrangement of the vegetation zone. From numerical simulations, the flow field, vorticity distribution, turbulence distribution, and wave distribution around the vegetation zone were analyzed according to the crest depth, width, density, and multi-row arrangement distance of the vegetation zone. The hydraulic experiment results suggest that the transmission coefficient decreased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased, and the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the hydraulic characteristics significantly. Moreover, the numerical simulations showed that as the crest depth decreased, the width and density of vegetation increased along with vorticity and turbulence intensity, resulting in increased wave height attenuation performance. Additionally, there was no significant difference in vorticity, turbulence intensity, and wave height attenuation performance based on the multi-row arrangement distance. Overall, in the case of submerged rigid vegetation, the wave energy attenuation performance increased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased and crest depth decreased. However, the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the wave energy attenuation performance significantly.
