Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructure-less network that can configure itself without any centralized management. The topology of MANET changes dynamically which makes it open for new nodes to join it easily. The openness area of MANET makes it very vulnerable to different types of attacks. One of the most dangerous attacks is the Resource Consumption Attack (RCA). In this type of attack, the attacker consumes the normal node energy by flooding it with bogus packets. Routing in MANET is susceptible to RCA and this is a crucial issue that deserves to be studied and solved. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to study the impact of RCA on two routing protocols namely, Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR); as a try to find the most resistant routing protocol to such attack. The contribution of this paper is a new RCA model (RCAM) which applies RCA on the two chosen routing protocols using the NS-2 simulator.

Mobile Ad hoc Network is a network of multiple wireless nodes which communicate and exchange information together without any fixed and centralized infrastructure. The core objective for the development of MANET is to provide movability, portability and extensibility. Due to infrastructure less network topology of the network changes frequently this causes many challenges for designing routing algorithms. Many routing protocols for MANET have been suggested for last few years and research is still going on. In this paper we review three main routing protocols namely Proactive, Reactive and Hybrid, performance comparison of Proactive such as DSDV, Reactive as AODV, DSR, TORA and Hybrid as ZRP in different network scenarios including dynamic network size, changing number of nodes, changing movability of nodes, in high movability and denser network and low movability and low traffic. This paper analyzes these scenarios on the performance evaluation metrics e.g. Throughput, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), Normalized Routing Load(NRL) and End To-End delay(ETE).This paper also reviews various network layer security attacks challenge by routing protocols, detection mechanism proposes to detect these attacks and compare performance of these attacks on evaluation metrics such as Routing Overhead, Transmission Delay and packet drop rates.

The current security issue for the Internet is focused on the security for user data. On the other hand, the research on the security for routing protocols is not so active, considering the importance of its role for the harmonious and accurate operation of the Internet. In this paper, we investigate the security problems of the link-state routing protocol which has been employed in the Internet, and suggest a new authentication mechanism for routing messages which complements and extends the previous ones. For this purpose, a concept of dual hash chains is newly introduced, which is provably secure, and we explain how to provide both the integrity and source authentication service for routing messages based on the session hash chains.

In this technical report, we have examined the basic building blocks of mobile ad-hoc networks. The paper discusses various security requirements of ad-hoc networks, attacks in ad-hoc networks, Security Implementation and Routing Protocols. The primary purpose of the paper is to address the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol in detail, along with the various possible attacks. Finally, algorithms for securing OLSR are proposed, via the addition of digital signatures, as well as more advanced techniques such as cross checking of advertised routing control data with the node's geographical position. The main aim of this research work is the addition of security features to the existing OLSR protocol. In order to effectively design a secure routing protocol, we present a detailed literature survey of existing protocols, along with the various attacks. Based on the information gathered from the literature survey, a secure routing protocol for OLSR is proposed. The proposed secure routing protocol involves the addition of a digital signature as well as more advanced techniques such as the reuse of previous topology information to validate the actual link state. Thus, the main objective of this work is to provide secure routing and secure data transmission.
We use the call routing to interpret the number or name for routing address in multimedia internet. The routing address is used for connection setup. The traffic engineering consists of traffic management, capacity management and network planning. In this paper, in the traffic management function, the basic functions for call routing and connection/bearer-path routing will be presented.
Secure routing is vital to the acceptance and use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for many applications. However, providing secure routing in WSNs is a challenging task due to the inherently constrained capabilities of sensor nodes. Although a wide variety of routing protocols have been proposed for WSNs, most do not take security into account as a main goal. Routing attacks can have devastating effects on WSNs and present a major challenge when designing robust security mechanisms for WSNs. In this paper, we examine some of the most common routing attacks in WSNs. In particular, we focus on the wormhole routing attack in some detail. A variety of countermeasures have been proposed in the literature for such attacks. However, most of these countermeasures suffer from flaws that essentially render them ineffective for use in large scale WSN deployments. Due to the inherent constraints found in WSNs, there is a need for lightweight and robust security mechanisms. The examination of the wormhole routing attack and some of the proposed countermeasures makes it evident that it is extremely difficult to retrofit existing protocols with defenses against routing attacks. It is suggested that one of the ways to approach this rich field of research problems in WSNs could be to carefully design new routing protocols in which attacks such as wormholes can be rendered meaningless.

Networks in Mobile ad hoc contain distribution and do not have a predefined structure which practically means that network modes can play the role of being clients or servers. The routing protocols used in mobile Ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are characterized by limited bandwidth, mobility, limited power supply, and routing protocols. Hybrid routing protocols solve the delay problem of reactive routing protocols and the routing overhead of proactive routing protocols. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is used to solve other real-life problems such as the travelling salesman problem, capacity planning, and the vehicle routing challenge. Bio-inspired methods have probed lethal in helping to solve the problem domains in these networks. Hybrid routing protocols combine the distance vector routing protocol (DVRP) and the link-state routing protocol (LSRP) to solve the routing problem.

The need for securing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is essential especially in mission critical fields such as military and medical applications. Security techniques that are used to secure any network depend on the security requirements that should be achieved to protect the network from different types of attacks. Furthermore, the characteristics of wireless networks should be taken into consideration when applying security techniques to these networks. In this paper, energy efficient Security Model for Tree-based Routing protocols (SMTR) is proposed. In SMTR, different attacks that could face any tree-based routing protocol in WSNs are studied to design a security reference model that achieves authentication and data integrity using either Message Authentication Code (MAC) or Digital Signature (DS) techniques. The SMTR communication and processing costs are mathematically analyzed. Moreover, SMTR evaluation is performed by firstly, evaluating several MAC and DS techniques by applying them to tree-based routing protocol and assess their efficiency in terms of their power requirements. Secondly, the results of this assessment are utilized to evaluate SMTR phases in terms of energy saving, packet delivery success ratio and network life time.
In MANET consisting of only mobile nodes, all nodes serve as routes. However, the dynamic topology due to frequent movement of nodes degrades routing performance and is also cause of many security vulnerabilities. Therefore, security must be applied to routing techniques that can influence the performance of MANET. In this paper, we propose a technique for efficiently responding to various routing attacks and safe data transmission through application of zone-key based security routing techniques. A zone-based network structure was used, and a management node that manages member nodes in each zone was used in the proposed technique. In addition, the damage from the attacking node was minimized by issuing a key to each node and applying this to a routing technique. The zone management node issues a key for encryption routing information and manages the issuance information. A member node that wants to transmit data encrypts routing in formation using a key issued from the zone management node, and then performs path discovery using this. The improved performance of the proposed technique was confirmed through a comparative experiment with the CBSR and ARNA technique, excellent performance was confirmed through experiments.

An ad hoc network is a collection of mobile nodes without any Infrastructure. However, ad hoc networks are vulnerable to attacks such as routing disruption and resource consumption; thus, routing protocol security is needed This paper proposes a secure and efficient routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, where only one-way hash function are used to authenticate nodes in the ROUTE REQUEST, while additional public-key cryptography is used to guard against active attackers disguising a node in the ROUTE REPLY.
