The common goals of designing a routing algorithm are not only to reduce control packet overhead, maximize throughput and minimize the end-to-end delay, but also take into consideration the energy consumption. Scalability is an important factor in designing an efficient routing protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSN's). Three metrics (power consumption, time of transmission and packet loss rate) are used in order to compare three routing protocols which are AODV, DSDV and LEACH.

A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is characterized by multi-hop wireless connectivity, frequently changing network topology with mobile nodes and the efficiency of the dynamic routing protocol plays an important role in the performance of the network. In this paper, the performance of five routing protocols for MANET is compared by using OPNET modeler: AODV, DSR, GRP, OLSR and TORA. The various performance metrics are examined, such as packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and routing overhead with varying data traffic, number of nodes and mobility. In our simulation results, OLSR shows the best performance in terms of data delivery ratio in static networks, while AODV has the best performance in mobile networks with moderate data traffic. When comparing proactive protocols (OLSR, GRP) and reactive protocols (AODV, DSR) with varying data traffic in the static networks, proactive protocols consistently presents almost constant overhead while the reactive protocols show a sharp increase to some extent. When comparing each of proactive protocols in static and mobile networks, OLSR is better than GRP in the delivery ratio while overhead is more. As for reactive protocols, DSR outperforms AODV under the moderate data traffic in static networks because it exploits caching aggressively and maintains multiple routes per destination. However, this advantage turns into disadvantage in high mobility networks since the chance of the cached routes becoming stale increases.

Recently, multicast routing protocols become increasingly important aspect in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), as they effectively manage group communications. Meanwhile, multimedia and real-time applications are becoming essential need for users of MANET. Thus it is necessary to design efficient and effective Quality of Service (QoS) multicast routing strategies. In this paper, we address the scalability problem of multicast routing protocols to support QoS over MANETs. In particular, we introduce a Position-Based QoS Multicast Routing Protocol (PBQMRP). Basically, the protocol based on dividing the network area into virtual hexagonal cells. Then, the location information is exploited to perform efficient and scalable route discovery. In comparison with other existing QoS multicast routing protocols, PBQMRP incurs less control packets by eliminating network flooding behavior. Through simulation, the efficiency and scalability of PBQMRP are evaluated and compared with the well-known On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). Simulation results justify that our protocol has better performance, less control overhead and higher scalability.
The existing ad hoc network protocols suffer the scalability problem due to the inherent characteristics of node mobility. Cluster-based routing protocols divide the member nodes into a set of clusters and perform a hierarchical routing between these clusters. This hierarchical feature help to improve the scalability of ad hoc network routing. However, previous k-hop cluster-based routing protocols face another problems, that is, control overhead of the cluster headers. This paper proposes a novel k-hop cluster-based routing scheme with delegation functions for mobile ad hoc networks. The scheme employs is based on tree topology to manage cluster members in effectively. The cluster headers do not manage the routing table for whole members, while the header keeps the routing table for its neighbor members and the member list for one hop over nodes within k-hop cluster. Then the in-between leveled nodes manage the nested nodes which is structured in the lower level. Therefore, the proposed mechanism can reduce some control overhead of the cluster leaders.

Underwater Wireless Sensors Networks (UWSNs) are deployed in remotely monitored environment such as water level monitoring, ocean current identification, oil detection, habitat monitoring and numerous military applications. Providing scalable and efficient routing is very challenging in UWSNs due to the harsh underwater environment. The biggest difficulties are the nodes inherent movement due to water current, long delay in data transmission, low bandwidth of the acoustic signal, high error rate and energy scarcity in battery powered nodes. Many routing protocols have been proposed to solve the aforementioned problems. There are three broad categories of routing protocols namely depth based, energy based and vector-based routing. Vector Based Forwarding protocols perform routing through virtual pipeline by defining their radius which give proper direction to packets communication. We proposed a routing protocol termed as Path-Oriented Energy Scaled Expanded Vector Based Forwarding (PESEVBF). PESEVBF takes into account all parameters; holding time, the source nodes packets routing path and void holes creation on the second hop; PESEVBF not only considers the packet upward advancement but also focus on density of the forwarded nodes in terms of number of potential forwarding and suppressed nodes for path selection. Node selection in resultant holding time is based on minimum Path Factor (PF) value. Moreover, the suppressed node will be selected for packet forwarding to avoid the void holes occurrences on the second hop. Performance of PESEVBF is compared with other routing protocols using matrices such as energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, packets dropping ratio and duplicate packets creation indicating considerable performance improvement.

Multicast Routings is a big challenge due to limitations such as node power and bandwidth Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). The path to be chosen from the source to the destination node requires protocols. Multicast protocols support group-oriented operations in a bandwidth-efficient way. While several protocols for multi-cast MANETs have been evolved, security remains a challenging problem. Consequently, MANET is required for high quality of service measures (QoS) such infrastructure and application to be identified. The goal of a MANETs QoS-aware protocol is to discover more optimal pathways between the network source/destination nodes and hence the QoS demands. It works by employing the optimization method to pick the route path with the emphasis on several QoS metrics. In this paper safe routing is guaranteed using the Secured Multicast Routing offered in MANET by utilizing the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique to integrate the QOS-conscious route setup into the route selection. This implies that only the data transmission may select the way to meet the QoS limitations from source to destination. Furthermore, the track reliability is considered when selecting the best path between the source and destination nodes. For the optimization of the best path and its performance, the optimized algorithm called the micro artificial bee colony approach is chosen about the probabilistic ant routing technique.
With the recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have become available. However, energy-efficient routing is one of the most important key technologies in wireless sensor networks as sensor nodes are highly energy-constrained. Therefore, many researchers have proposed routing protocols for sensor networks, especially cluster-based routing protocols, which have many advantages such as reduced control messages, bandwidth re-usability, and improved power control. Some protocols use information on the locations of sensor nodes to construct clusters efficiently. However, it is rare that all sensor nodes know their positions. In this article, we propose another cluster-based routing protocol for sensor networks. This protocol does not use information concerning the locations of sensor nodes, but uses the remaining energy of sensor networks and the desirable number of cluster heads according to the circumstances of the sensor networks. From performance simulation, we found that the proposed protocol shows better performance than the low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH).
One of the major issues in current on-demand routing protocols for ad hoc networks is the high resource consumed by route discovery traffic. In these protocols, flooding is typically used by the source to broadcast a route request (RREQ) packet in search of a route to the destination. Such network-wide flooding potentially disturbs many nodes unnecessarily by querying more nodes than is actually necessary, leading to rapid exhaustion of valuable network resources such as wireless bandwidth and battery power. In this paper, a simple optimization technique for efficient route discovery is proposed. The technique proposed herein is location-based and can be used in conjunction with the existing Location-Aided Routing (LAR) scheme to further reduce the route discovery overhead. A unique feature of our technique not found in LAR and most other protocols is the selective use of unicast instead of broadcast for route request/query transmission made possible by a novel reuse of routing and location information. We refer to this new optimization as the UNIQUE (UNIcast QUEry) technique. This paper studies the efficacy of UNIQUE by applying it to the route discovery of the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol. In addition, a comparative study is made with a DSR protocol optimized with only LAR. The results show that UNIQUE could further reduce the overall routing overhead by as much as 58% under highly mobile conditions. With less congestion caused by routing traffic, the data packet delivery performance also improves in terms of end-to-end delay and the number of data packets successfully delivered to their destinations.

Mobile multi-robot teams are useful in many critical applications such as search and rescue. Explicit communication among robots in such mobile multi-robot teams is useful for the coordination of such teams as well as exchanging data. Since many applications for mobile robots involve scenarios in which communication infrastructure may be damaged or unavailable, mobile robot teams frequently need to communicate with each other via ad hoc networking. In such scenarios, low-overhead and energy-efficient routing protocols for delivering messages among robots are a key requirement. Two important primitives for communication are essential for enabling a wide variety of mobile robot applications. First, unicast communication (between two robots) needs to be provided to enable coordination and data exchange. Second, in many applications, group communication is required for flexible control, organization, and management of the mobile robots. Multicast provides a bandwidth-efficient communication method between a source and a group of robots. In this paper, we first propose and evaluate two unicast routing protocols tailored for use in ad hoc networks formed by mobile multi-robot teams: Mobile robot distance vector (MRDV) and mobile robot source routing (MRSR). Both protocols exploit the unique mobility characteristics of mobile robot networks to perform efficient routing. Our simulation study show that both MRDV and MRSR incur lower overhead while operating in mobile robot networks when compared to traditional mobile ad hoc network routing protocols such as DSR and AODV. We then propose and evaluate an efficient multicast protocol mobile robot mesh multicast (MRMM) for deployment in mobile robot networks. MRMM exploits the fact that mobile robots know what velocity they are instructed to move at and for what distance in building a long lifetime sparse mesh for group communication that is more efficient. Our results show that MRMM provides an efficient group communication mechanism that can potentially be used in many mobile robot application scenarios.

Many routing protocols have been proposed for mobile ad-hoc networks, but most protocols do not consider the physical location of the communicating nodes. In this paper we propose adaptive zoning approach with multiple hosts for reducing the number of route request messages. The proposed approach makes the sub-request zone has shorter interval than the existing schemes between the source and destination. This results in significantly lower routing overhead than the existing schemes as verified by computer simulation.
