  • The main objective of this paper is to provide a methodology of feature extraction using shape of image objects for content-based image retrieval. The shape of most real-life objects is irregular, and hence there is no universal approach to quantify the shape of an arbitrary object. In particular. electronic catalogs contain many image objects for their products. In this paper, we perform feature extraction based on individual objects in images rather than on the whole image itself, since our method uses a shape-based approach of objects using RLC lines within an image. Experiments show that shape parameters distinctly represented image objects and provided better classification and discrimination among image objects in an image database compared to Texture.

  • Conventional cutting(CC) and Ultrasonic Vibration Cutting(UVC) of 20[KHz] are practised with standard lathe for fine ceramics(A1$_{2}$O$_{3}$. UVC is suggested to good cutting method for difficult-to-machine-materials and it is known to excellent cutting method to super precision cutting and elevation of productibility for general, nonferrous matals. In this research, main results to be obtained are as follows: 1. From the CC and UVC results by general lathe with sintering diamond tool, the surface roughness and roundness are improved in UVC. Also tool life is longer in UVC than CC. From the observation of machined surface, it is found that brittle fracutural material remove occured in fine ceramics cutting. 2. It is verified that the thrust force is the biggest in fine ceramics cutting, principal force is the next, and feed rate force the third and it is appear a little, on the other hand the principal force is the biggest in metal cutting, feed rate frece is the second, and thrust force is the next.

  • This study compares Static Terrestrial Laser Scanning (STLS)with the conventional Total Station (TS) method for the geometric assessment of cylindrical storage tanks. With the crucial need for maintaining tank integrity in the oil and gas industry, STLS and TS methods are evaluated for their efficacy in assessing tank deformations. Using STLS and TS, the roundness and verticality of two cylindrical tanks were examined. A deformation analysis based on American Petroleum Institute (API) standards was then provided. Key objectives included comparing the two methods according to API standards, evaluating the workflow for STLS point cloud processing, and presenting the pros and cons of the STLS method for tank geometric assessment. The study found that STLS, with its detailed and high-resolution data acquisition, offers a substantial advantage in having a comprehensive structural assessment over TS. However, STLS requires more processing time and prior knowledge about the data to tune certain parameters and achieve accurate assessment. The project outcomes intend to enhance industry professionals' understanding of applying STLS and TS to tank assessments, helping them choose the best method for their specific requirements.

  • Size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) agglomerates in the dilute phase of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d{\times}2.6m\;high$) have been determined by the laser sheet technique. Axial solid holdup distribution of the CNT particles showed S curve with dense phase and dilute phase in bubbling fluidization regime. Heywood diameter and Feret diameter of the CNT agglomerates in the dilute phase of bubbling fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The CNT particle number in the agglomerates increased with increasing of gas velocity. Aspect ratio increased and circularity, roundness and solidity decreased with increasing of gas velocity. A possible mechanism of agglomerates formation was proposed based on the obtained information.

  • Some promising design criteria for the construction of artificial beaches are presented. Based on the result of visitor's enquete and field observations, the degree of satisfaction for some parameters such as wave height, water and air temperature and quality of sediments are obtained. Correlations between these parameters and the degree of satisfaction are also derived and discussed. From the study, the desirable design conditions for artificial beaches with the degree of satisfaction over 70% are proposed as; the minimum comfortable utilization area per capita is found to be approximately $10m^2$, maximum mean wave height 0.7m, the lowest water temperature $22^{\circ}C$, average diameter of sands 0.5mm approximately with identical grain size and roundness, and the foreshore slope less than 1 : 20.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the geomorphic processes of beach and sanddune development in the Chungcheong-Namdo Province. The sands consist mainly of quartz and feldspar with lesser amounts of mica and other heavy minerals. With the exception of those from the granite, the sands have a very fine texture. Another characteristic of the sand grains is low degrees of roundness and grading indicating that source areas for the material were in the vicinity of the accumulating field. Over the years, the beaches have receded as a response to the decreasing amount of depositional materials. The driving force for the formation and transformation of coastal dunes in the study area is dominant winds from the center of the Siberian High. To some extent, the erosion of coastal dunes has been a global phenomenon. The degradation process occurred most actively when spring tides attacked beaches, berms, and foredunes. The relief and shape of present-day coastal dunes is determined initially by the Pleistocene strata underneath. From the fact that the strata contained traces of frozen structure, it can be inferred that sediment once experienced the process of soil formation.

  • The welded connection is known as an essential factor for establishing qualified construction and/or maintenance of wrapped steel pipe. In this study, welded connection conditions in the coated pipes with large diameter (over 700 mm) in Korea water distribution systems were estimated for suggesting technically and economically available welded connection method. For the study analysis, current steel pipe usage and accident cases were investigated. In addition, the characteristics of each welded connection method and automatic or manual connection techniques were also compared and estimated. As results, automatic welded connection method is superior than manual welded connection method in aspect of pure construction cost (average 9%) or pure welded connection cost (average 13.5%). When the poor welding-working situations in Korea are considered such as high tolerance of out-of-roundness in KS regulation, a number of lap joint welded connections, the real cost benefits of automatic welded connection should be much higher than those of manual welded connections.

  • Ultimate flexural buckling strength of cylindrical steel shells for the wind turbine tower structure was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and type of steel on the ultimate flexural strength of cylindrical shell were analyzed. The flexural strengths of cylindrical shells obtained by FEA were compared with design flexural strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and AISI. The shell buckling modes recommended in DNV-RP-C202 and the out-of-roundness tolerance and welding induced imperfections specified in Eurocode 3 were used in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometrical imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 60 to 210 were considered and shells are assumed to be made of SM520 or HSB800 steel.

  • It is known that the difference of texture of the polycrystalline Al sheet is not a critical parameter for the formation of aligned nanopore arrays in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). This will be related to the polycrystalline grain in the Al sheet. The texture of each grain in the polycrystalline Al sheet is different. The mixed textures of grains have the mixing effects on the nanopore structure of the AAO. Thus, the effect of Al texture on the nanopore structure of the AAO was investigated using three types of Al single crystals with (111), (200) and (220) textures in this paper. These three types of AAO layers were fabricated by the two-step anodizing method at 40 V and temperature of 0-5℃ in oxalic acid solution. In the nanopores formed on the AAO, the average area of one nanopore and the average roundness of one nanopore were measured were measured based on the SEM images. In the hexagon obtained by connecting nanopores on the AAO, the average standard deviation of one angle deviated from 120° was measured. In the AAO nanopores with texture of (111), (200) and (220) single crystal samples, the average area of one nanopore of (200) single crystal sample was the widest, followed by (111), (220) single crystals. The average circularity of one nanopore of (200) single crystal sample was the best, followed by (111), (220) single crystals. The average standard deviation of an angle from 120° of (220) single crystal sample was the largest, followed by (111) and (200) single crystals.
