Step-Type Obstacle Traversal Algorithm for Six Legged Mobile Robot (견마형 로봇의 계단형 장애물 극복 알고리즘 개발)

  • Mobile robots traveling on rough terrain need several algorithms to overcome obstacles. In this paper, we propose the step-type obstacle traversal algorithm to adapt the mobile robot with six arms and wheels to travel on rough terrain. Obstacle traversal is composed of two different stages: planning and control. In planning stage, the required joint torque of each arm as well as the interference between the wheels and the arms are analyzed to guarantee traversing obstacles. Control stage includes such steps as checking distance to obstacle, determining the height and length of obstacle, performing arm motion according to sensed torque data, and evaluating safety at every instance. The proposed algorithm is designed and implemented for CALEB 1 six legged robot developed in the laboratory and verified by simulation and experiment in outdoor environment.

  • Unmanned ground vehicles(UGVs) are expected to play a key role in the future army. These UGVs would be used for weapons platforms. logistics carriers, reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition in the rough terrain. Most of path planning methodologies for UGVs offer an optimal or sub-optimal shortest-path in a 20 space. However, those methodologies do not consider increment and reduction effects of relative distance when a UGV climbs up or goes down in the slope of rough terrain. In this paper, we propose a novel path planning methodology using the modified distance transform algorithm. Our proposed path planning methodology employs two kinds of map. One is binary obstacle map. The other is the DEM. With these two maps, the modified distance transform algorithm in which distance between cells is increased or decreased by weighting function of slope is suggested. The proposed methodology is verified by various simulations on the randomly generated DEM and obstacle map.

  • In this paper, the method of analyzing mobility of the mechanisms is suggested. The method based on the joint screws provides accurate values of mobility of the mechanisms even with the lack of geometric generality. To show its validity, the method is applied to finding mobilities of planar mobile robots and a rough-terrain mobile robot, Mars Rover. To do so, simplified joint model for each of four different typical wheels of the mobile robots are described including friction velocities, firstly.   • For a mobile robot that travels along a terrain consisting of various geology, information on tire force and friction coefficient between ground and wheel is an important factor. In order to estimate the lateral force between ground and wheel, a lot of information about the model and the surrounding environment of the vehicle is required in conventional method. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to estimate lateral force through simple model (Minimal Argument Lateral Slip Curve, MALSC) using only minimum data with high estimation accuracy and to improve estimation reliability of the friction coefficient by using the estimated lateral force data. Simulation is carried out to analyze the correlation between the longitudinal and transverse friction coefficients and slip angles to design the simplified lateral force estimation model by analysing simulation data and to apply it to the actual field environment. In order to verify the validity of the equation, estimation results are compared with the conventional method through simulation. Also, the results of the lateral force and friction coefficient estimation are compared from both the conventional method and the proposed model through the actual robot running experiments.

  • A four-legged mobile robot can move on the plain terrain with mobility and stability, but if there exist any obstacles on the terrain of the motion direction, it takes extra times for a mobile robot to cross those obstacles and the stability should be considered during motion. The main objevtive is the study of a quadruped which can cross obstacles with better mobility, stability and fuel economy than any other wheeled or tracked vehicles. Vertical step, isolated wall and ditch are the basic obstacles and by understanding those three cases perfectly, a quadruped can move on any mixed rough terrain as 4-legged animal moves. Each leg of a determine the crossing capability in a static analysis. A quadruped can be simplified with links and joints. By applying the research method, a quadruped can determine the control procedures as soon as it receives the terrain informations from scanner and finally can be moved as animals move with mobility and stability.

  • Hybrid locomotive UGV with actively articulated legs along with wheeled ends has high traversability to travel over rough terrain. The behavior control method was usually adapted for the controlling of the suspension configuration which determines the traversability of the UGV. In this study, we are proposing a method of configuration planning of the legs without any detail geometric data about the terrain. The terrain was estimated by the traces of each wheel and the leg configurations for the desired posture of the vehicle were set up against the constraints of the terrain. Also, an optimal leg configuration was calculated based on the quasi-static stability and power consumption, and plans for the leg behavior were made. Validity of the proposed method was checked by simulations using some off-the-shelf programs, and showed that the orientation control without geometric features of terrains and simplification of the behavior planning for obstacle negotiation were possible.

Numerical Study on the Wind Flow Over Hilly Terrain (언덕지형을 지나는 유동의 수치해석적 연구)

  • A theoretical and numerical investigation on the boundary-layer flow over a two- or three-dimensional hill is presented. The numerical model is based on the finite volume method with boundary-fitted coordinates. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with modified wall function and the low-Reynolds-number model are employed. The hypothesis of Reynolds number independency for the atmospheric boundary-layer flow over aerodynamically rough terrain is confirmed by the numerical simulation. Comparisons of the mean velocity profiles and surface pressure distributions between the numerical predictions and the wind-tunnel experiments on the flow over a hill show good agreement. The linear theory provides generally good prediction of speed-up characteristics for the gentle-sloped hills. The flow separation occurs in the hill slope of 0.5 and the measured reattachment points are compared with the numerical prediction. It is found that the k- $\varepsilon$ turbulence model is reasonably accurate in predicting the attached flow, while the low- Reynolds-number model is more suitable to simulate the separated flows.ows.

  • Unmanned ground vehicles have important military, reconnaissance, and materials handling application. Many of these applications require the UGVs to move at high speeds through uneven, natural terrain with various compositions and physical parameters. This paper presents a framework for high speed autonomous navigation based on the integrated real time traversability. Specifically, the proposed system performs real-time dynamic simulation and calculate maximum traversing velocity guaranteeing safe motion over rough terrain. The architecture of autonomous navigation is firstly presented for high-speed autonomous navigation. Then, the integrated real time traversability, which is composed of initial velocity profiling step, dynamic analysis step, road classification step and stable velocity profiling step, is introduced. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the method for a $6{\times}6$ autonomous vehicle moving on flat terrain with bump.

Design and development of an automated all-terrain wheeled robot

  • Due to the rapid progress in the field of robotics, it is a high time to concentrate on the development of a robot that can manoeuvre in all type of landscapes, ascend and descend stairs and sloping surfaces autonomously. This paper presents details of a prototype robot which can navigate in very rough terrain, ascend and descend staircase as well as sloping surface and cross ditches. The robot is made up of six differentially steered wheels and some passive mechanism, making it suitable to cross long ditches and landscape undulation. Static stability of the developed robot have been carried out analytically and navigation capability of the robot is observed through simulation in different environment, separately. Description of embedded system of the robot has also been presented and experimental validation has been made along with some details on obstacle avoidance. Finally the limitations of the robot have been explored with their possible reasons.
