Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Three design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved. It is also found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.
We numerically analyzed flow characteristics of the polymer melt in the screw equipment using a proper modeling and investigated design parameters which have influence on the mixing performance as the capability of the screw equipment. We considered the non-Newtonian and non-isothermal flow in a single rotor equipment to investigate the mixing performance with respect to screw dimensions as shape parameter of the single rotor equipment and screw speed as process parameter. We used Bird-Carreau-Yasuda model as a viscous model of the polymer melt and the particle tracking method to investigate the mixing performance in the screw equipment and considered four mixing performance indexes: residence time distribution, deformation rate, total strain and particle standard deviation as a new mixing performance index. We compared these indexes to determine design parameters and object function. On basis of the analysis results, we carried out the optimal design by using the response surface method and design of experiments. In conclusion, the differences of results between the optimal value and numerical analysis are about 5.0%.

Aerodynamic design optimization of rotor airfoil has been performed with advanced design method for improved aerodynamic characteristics of ONERA airfoils as a baseline. A multiple response surface method is used to consider various consider various constraints in rotor airfoil design. Airfoil surface and mean camber line are modified using various shape functions. Numerical simulations are performed using KFLOW, a Navier-Stokes solver with shear stress transport turbulence model. The present design method provides favorable configurations for the high performance rotor airfoil. Resulting optimized air foils give better aerodynamic performance than the baseline airfoils.

This paper describes some research works of computer-aided design of blanking and piercing progressive die for stator and rotor parts. An approach to the system is based on knowledge based rules. The deveolped system is composed of six modules such as main program, input and shape treatment, production feasibility check, strip layout, die layout and drawing edit module. Using this system, design parameters ( geometric shapes, die and punch dimensions and dimensions of tool elements) are determined and output is gen- erated in graphic from. Knowledges for tool design are extracted from the plasticity theories, handbooks, relevant references and empirical know-hows of experts in blkanking companies. The developed system provides powerful capabilities for process planning and die design of stator and rotor parts.
The optimization of a blade sweep for a transonic axial compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) has been performed using a response surface method and a Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. Two shape variables of the rotor blade, which are used to define a blade sweep, are introduced to increase an adiabatic efficiency. Data points for response evaluations have been selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method has been used for an optimization on a response surface. The result shows that the adiabatic efficiency is increased to about 1 percent compared to that of the reference shape of the rotor blade. Relatively high increasement of the adiabatic efficiency is obtained between 20 and 60 percent span. In the present study, backward swept blade is more effective to increase the adiabatic efficiency In the axial compressor rotor.

A design study was conducted for a new concept aircraft(Canard Rotor/Wing: CRW) that has the capability of dual mode flight, a rotorcraft and a fixed wing mode. The CRW can show a vertical take off/landing and a high speed/efficiency cruise performance simultaneously. It is not surprising to develop a new sizing code for this class of aircraft because conventional sizing codes developed solely for either the rotary wing or the fixed wing aircraft are not adequate to design a dual mode aircraft operated both by the rotary wing through tip jet effux and the fixed wing lift. Thus, a new design code was developed based on the conventional sizing code by adding some features including rotor performance, duct flow, and engine flow analysis, hence could eventually predict the performance of reaction driven rotor, the flight performance and the flight characteristics. The various design parameters were investigated to find their influences on the flight performance then, a small UAV(Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle) of 1500 lbs class was optimally designed to have minimum weight using the developed sizing code.
This paper introduces the multi-coil eddy current sensor and its characteristic in magnetic material gas turbine rotor. In the past, magnetic particle inspection method was used for qualitative defect evaluation in magnetic material gas turbine rotor. And the ultrasonic inspection method was used for quantitative defect evaluation. Nowadays, eddy current method is used in magnetic gas turbine rotor inspection due to advanced sensor design technology. We developed multi-coil eddy current sensor for the rotor dovetail inspection. At first, rotor stress is analyzed for the determination of sensor position and number. The sensor coils are designed to cover the stress concentration area of rotor dovetail. We select optimum frequency according to material standard penetration data and experiment results. The rotor mock-up and artificial defects were made for the signal detection and resolution analysis of multi-coil eddy current sensor. The results show that signal detection and resolution capabilities are enhanced in comparison to the commercialized sensor enough for the gas turbine rotor inspection. So, this developed multi-coil eddy current sensor substituted for commercialized one and it applied in real gas turbine rotor inspection.
The most important component of wind turbine is rotor blades. The developing method of wind turbine was focused on design of rotor blade. By the way, the design of a rotating body is more decisive process in order to adjust the performance of wind turbine. For instance, the design allows the designer to specify the wind characteristics derived by topographical map. The iterative solver is then used to adjust one of the selected inputs so that the desired rotating performance which is directly related to power generating capacity and efficiency is achieved. Furthermore, in order to save the money for manufacturing the rotor blades and to decrease the maintenance fee of wind power generation plant, while decelerating the cut-in speed of rotor. Therefore, the design and manufacturing of rotating body is understood as a substantial technology of wind power generation plant development. The aiming of this study is building-up the profitable approach to designing of rotating body as a system for the wind power generation plant. The process was conducted in two steps. Firstly, general designing and it’s serial testing of rotating body for voltage measurement. Secondly, the serial test results above were examined with the CFD code. Then, the analysis is made on the basis of amount of electricity generated by rotor-blades and of cut-in speed of generator.

A method for generating 3D solid models and drawings for a rotor in the steam turbine is proposed. One of the most important design steps is generating the drawing for manufacturing it. This step is a very routine and time-consuming job because each drawing is composed of several kinds of views and many dimensions. To achieve automation for this activity, rotor profiles are composed of 2D entity groups with attributes. Based on this, the improved design process is developed as follows. First, the rotor profiles can be selected by searching for 2D entity groups using the related attributes. Second, the profiles are connected sequentially so that an entire rotor profile is determined. The completed profile is used to generate 2D drawings automatically, especially views, dimensions, and 3D models. The proposed method is implemented using a commercial CAD/CAM system, Unigraphics, and API functions written in C-language and applied to the rotor of steam turbines. Some illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
