We studied the compact anode design to develop 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube with large focal spot 1.2 mm, small focal spot 0.6 mm and tube voltage 150 kV for large hospital digital radiography using computer thermal simulation. The larger thermal radiation effect in a high vacuum can reduce the temperature of anode so the method to increase the surface area of anode is investigated. The anode has the multi-tier shape at the back side of TZM body of anode and also bigger diameter of anode. The number of multi-tiers was varied from 6 to 15 and the diameter of anode was also varied from ${\Phi}74$ to ${\Phi}82$. From ANSYS transient thermal simulation result, we could obtain $1056.4^{\circ}C$ anode maximum temperature when applying 100 kW input power at 0.1 second on target focal track which is less than $1091^{\circ}C$ of the conventional 75 kW X-ray tube with reduced anode weight by 15.5% than the conventional anode. The compact anode of reduced anode weight is able to improve the unwanted noise when the rotor is rotating at high-speed and also reduce the rotational torque which the cost effective stator-coil is possible. It is believed that the anode with 15 ea multi-tiers using ${\Phi}82$ can satisfy with the specification of the anode heat capacity. From the results of this paper, it has been confirmed that the proposed compact anode can be used as the anode of 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube for digital radiography.

The condition assessment of engineering systems has increased in importance because the manpower needed to operate and supervise various plants has been reduced. Especially, induction motors are at the core of most engineering processes, and there is an indispensable need to monitor their health and performance. So detection and diagnosis of motor faults is a base to improve efficiency of the industrial plant. In this paper, a model-based fault detection system is developed for induction motors, using steady state vibration signals. Early various fault detection systems using vibration signals are a trivial method and those methods are prone to have missed fault or false alarms. The suggested motor fault detection system was developed using a model-based reference value. The stationary signal had been extracted from the non-stationary signal using a data segmentation method. The signal processing method applied in this research is FFT. A reference model with spectra signal is developed and then the residuals of the vibration signal are generated. The ratio of RMS values of vibration residuals is proposed as a fault indicator for detecting faults. The developed fault detection system is tested on 800 hp motor and it is shown to be effective for detecting faults in the air-gap eccentricities and broken rotor bars. The suggested system is shown to be effective for reducing missed faults and false alarms. Moreover, the suggested system has advantages in the automation of fault detection algorithms in a random signal system, and the reference model is not complicated.
Multi-rotor type UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)s are expanding their applications not only for military purposes but also for private industries such as aerial photography and unmanned delivery vehicles. For wider use of unmanned aerial vehicles, studies should be carried out to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise of propellers, which can be achieved based on techniques of predicting aerodynamic performance and noise in a given environment. In this study, aerodynamic and noise prediction techniques were developed for a small unmanned aerial vehicle propeller, and it was verified by comparing it with actual measurement results. Thrust and torque due to the change of r/min and the frequency spectral prediction at a given position secured the reliability of the prediction method, which provides a basis for the shape design of the propeller.

In developing a multistage compressor, the stage matching is one of the critical design issues. The mismatching can be often observed even if each stage has been proven good and then used as part of a compression system. A good matching among the stages can be achieved by changing various design parameters (i.e., passage cross sectional areas, blades angles, stagger angles, curvature, solidity, etc.). Therefore, designers need to find out what parameters must be changed and how much. In this study, a method to search the design parameters for optimum stage matching has been used based on an 1-D mathematical model of a compressor, which uses the data obtained from the preliminary test to identify the design parameters. This methodology is applied with a two-stage axial compressor, which was originally designed for a helicopter gas turbine engine. After identifying design parameters using preliminary test data, an optimization process has been employed to achieve the best matching between the stages (i.e., maximum efficiency of the compressor at its operation modes within a given range of the rotor speed under given restrictions for required stall margins and mass flow). 3-D flow calculations have been performed to confirm the usefulness of the corrections based on the 1-D mathematical model. Calculational results agree well with the experimental data in view of the performance characteristics. Some promising results were produced through the methodology proposed in this paper in conjunction with flow calculations.

This paper proposes a new sensorless speed control scheme of permanent magnet DC motor using a numerical model and hysteresis controller, which requires neither shaft encoder, speed estimator nor PI controllers. By supplying the identical instantaneous voltage to both model and motor in the direction of reducing torque difference, the rotor speed approaches to the model speed, namely setting value and the system can control motor speed precisely. As the numerical model whose electric parameters are the same as those of the actual motor is adopted, the armature rotating speed can be converged to the setting value by controlling torque on both sides to be equalized. And the hysteresis controller controls torque by restricting the torque errors within respective hysteresis bands, and motor torque are controlled by the armature voltage. The experiment results indicate good speed and load responses from the low speed range to the high, show accurate speed changing performance.

In this research, we analysed design and CFD analysis of an inflow radial turbine for OTEC with an output power of 8kW using an working fluid of ammonia. The inflow radial turbine consists of scroll casing, vain nozzle with 18 blade numbers and rotor blade with 13 blade numbers. Mass flow rate, and inlet temperature are 0.5kg/s and $25^{\circ}C$ respectively, and variable rotational speeds were applied between 12,000 and 36,000 with 3,000 rpm intervals. As the results according to the rotational speeds, the designed speed is 24,000 rpm where maximum efficiency exists. The maximum efficiency and output power are 88.66% and 8.52kW, respectively. Through this study, we expect that the analysed results will be used as the design material for the composition of the turbine optimal design parameters corresponding to the target output power under various working material conditions.

In developing an aircraft, configuration determination and requirement proofing depend on flight test results. Since the flight tests require much time and high cost, systematic flight test planning and analysis are needed to reduce cost and development time. This paper presents a desirability function approach to present an integrative measure of vibration levels at important positions and suggests a fractional factorial design which is one of the experimental design methods to help perform systematic flight tests. A method to perform flight tests in stages is also suggested to further reduce the number of flight tests.
The purpose of this research is to study the characteristics of heat transfer in composite rotary heat pipe as modeled turbine rotating by a finite element analysis and experiment. Nu number, Re number, Pr number and dimensionless condensate layer thickness by thermal input and revolutions per minute were given as analysis factors. The comparison between calculated and experimental data showed similar tendency. Therefore the analysis method may be useful to predict the performance of composite heat pipe. The resistance on heat pipe showed the best effect of heat transfer by film condensation, by decreasing film condensation, the heat transfer rate from condenser was increased rapidly. The dimensionless condensate layer thickness according to Re number at given Pr number showed constant values, the dimensionless condensate layer thickness is proportionate to the square root of inverse of revolution number per minute. In this study Nu=A$({\delta}({\omega}/v)^{-1/2}Re^B)$ is used to the convection heat transfer coefficient and A=0.963, B=0.5025 were obtained as analysis predicts.

Recently, composite materials have been mainly used in the main wings, ailerons, and fuselages of aircraft and rotor blades of helicopters. Composite materials used in rapid moving structures are subject to impact by hail, lightning, and bird strike. Such an impact can destroy fiber tissues in the composite materials as well as deform the composite materials, resulting in various problems such as weakened rigidity of the composite structure and penetration of water into tiny cracks. In this study, experiments were conducted using a 2 kW halogen lamp which is most frequently used as a light source, a 2 kW near-infrared lamp, which is used for heating to a high temperature, and a 6 kW xenon flash lamp which emits a large amount of energy for a moment. CFRP composite sandwich panels using Nomex honeycomb core were used as the specimens. Experiments were carried out under impact damages of 1, 4 and 8 J. It was found that the detection of defects was fast when the xenon flash lamp was used. The detection of damaged regions was excellent when the halogen lamp was used. Furthermore, the near-infrared lamp is an effective technology for showing the surface of a test object.
Tilting pad journal bearing is widely used for steam turbines because of its excellent dynamic stability. As the turbine capacity increases, power loss in the bearings becomes a matter of concern. Power loss in tilting pad journal bearings can be reduced by increasing the bearing clearance and reducing the pad arc length. In this study, the tilting pad journal bearing is tested by changing the seal tooth clearance to verify the static characteristics of the bearing. Bearing power loss and bearing metal temperature are evaluated to compare the bearing's performance and reliability for several test cases. The test bearing is a tilting pad journal bearing with 300.62mm inner diameter and 120.00mm active length. The bearing power loss, its metal temperature, and oil film thickness are measured and evaluated based on the rotor's rotational speed, oil flow rate, and bearing load. Test results show that a tilting pad journal bearing with large seal tooth clearance has 40% lower power loss compared with a bearing with a small seal tooth clearance. As the seal tooth clearance is increased, the power loss of the tilting pad journal bearing decreases. However, with respect to the bearing metal temperatures, a detuning point is observed that makes the minimum bearing metal temperature. Moreover, as the seal tooth clearance is increased, the oil film thickness increases due to high viscosity.
