Prediction of Hover Performance on Development of Small-Scale UAV using Numerical and Experimental Approach (실험을 통한 소형 무인헬리콥터의 공력인자 도출 및 제자리 비행 성능 예측)

  • Prediction of the rotor blade performance is important for determining design factors such as weight and size in development of a small-scale helicopter. Generally, prediction of helicopter performance means the estimation of the power required for a given flight condition. However, due to lack of test data and analyzed results for small-scale rotor blade operated at low Reynolds numbers ($Re{\approx}10^5$), this is not an easy task. As an initial research, this work performs a modeling of a single rotor configuration with FLIGHTLAB and a experimental research with rotor test bed. In this process, we performed small-scale isolated single rotor by experimental and numerical method and achieved good agreement of the hover performance on the test data and simulation results.

Validation of Loads Analysis for a Slowed Rotor at High Advance Ratios

  • This work conducts a validation study for loads analysis of the UH-60A slowed rotor at high advance ratios. The nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics analysis code, DYMORE II, is used with a freewake model for the rotorcraft comprehensive analysis. Wind tunnel test data of airloads and structural loads of a full-scale UH-60A slowed rotor are used for this validation study. This analysis predicts well the thrust reversal phenomenon at the advance ratio of 1.0. The section airloads such as normal forces and pitching moments and the oscillatory blade structural moments in this analysis are compared well or moderately with the measured data, although the higher harmonics components of blade torsion moments are not captured well. This validation study assesses the prediction accuracy and investigates the unique aeromechanics characteristics of a slowed rotor at high advance ratio.

Numerical Study of Rotor-Tower Interaction for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (수평축 풍력터빈의 로터-타워 공력 간섭현상에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • In the present study, numerical unsteady simulations of the NREL Phase VI wind turbine in downwind operation conditions were conducted to investigate rotor-tower interaction. The calculations were performed using an unstructured mesh, incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solver. To capture the unsteady effects associated with the tower shadow between the rotor blades and the tower, the wind turbine was modelled including the rotor, tower, hub, and nacelle. The present results generally showed good agreements with available experimental data. At the lowest wind speed, the pressure distribution was characterized by a complete collapse of the suction peak on the blade when the blade passes through the tower wake. It was found that unsteady effects play a significant role in the response of the blades.

  • The purpose of current study is to develop and verify the newly developed solver for analyzing rotor flow using the open-source code. The algorithm of standard solver, OpenFOAM, is improved to analyze the rotor inflow with and without fuselage. For the calculation of the rotor thrust, the virtual blade method based on the blade element method is employed. The inflow velocities on the rotor disk used to specify the effective angle of attack, have been included in the solver. The results of the current rotor inflow analysis are verified by comparing with other experimental and numerical results. It was confirmed that the modified solver provides satisfactory results for rotor-fuselage interaction problem.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the rotordynamic analysis of a dual-spool turbofan engine in the context of blade defect events. The blades of an axial-type aeroengine are typically well aligned during the compressor and turbine stages. However, they are sometimes exposed to damage, partially or entirely, for several operational reasons, such as cracks due to foreign objects, burns from the combustion gas, and corrosion due to oxygen in the air. Herein, we designed a dual-spool rotor using the commercial 3D modeling software CATIA to simulate blade defects in the turbofan engine. We utilized the rotordynamic parameters to create two finite element Euler-Bernoulli beam models connected by means of an inter-rotor bearing. We then applied the unbalanced forces induced by the mass eccentricities of the blades to the following selected scenarios: 1) fully balanced, 2) crack in the low-pressure compressor (LPC) and high pressure compressor (HPC), 3) burn on the high-pressure turbine (HPT) and low pressure compressor, 4) corrosion of the LPC, and 5) corrosion of the HPC. Additionally, we obtained the transient and steady-state responses of the overall rotor nodes using the Runge-Kutta numerical integration method, and employed model reduction techniques such as component mode synthesis to enhance the computational efficiency of the process. The simulation results indicate that the high-vibration status of the rotor commences beyond 10,000 rpm, which is identified as the first critical speed of the lower speed rotor. Moreover, we monitored the unbalanced stages near the inter-rotor bearing, which prominently influences the overall rotordynamic status, and the corrosion of the HPC to prevent further instability. The high-speed range operation (>13,000 rpm) coupled with HPC/HPT blade defects possibly presents a rotor-case contact problem that can lead to catastrophic failure.

An Experimental Study of Incidence Angel Effect on 3-D Axial Type Turbine (3차원 축류형 터빈에서 입사각의 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study of turbine performance is conducted with various incidence angles on a rotating turbine rotor. 5 different incidence angles are applied from -17$^{\circ}$to 13$^{\circ}$with 7.5$^{\circ}$gaps. In order to precisely set up the incidence angles at the rotor inlet, 5 turbine discs are manufactured with the different fir tree section. Total-to-total efficiencies are obtained on the several off-design points with considering the exit total pressure, which is meas fred at 12 locations between the hub and casing using a pressure rake. The degree of reaction is 0.373 at the mean radius, and Reynolds number based on the rotor chord is 0.86$\times$10$^{5}$ at the turbine inlet on the design point experiment. The experiment on a single-stage turbine is conducted at the low-pressure and low-speed state, but it is sufficient to consider the blade loading effect due to the rotating apparatus even though the total pressure loss at the exit is increased proportionally to the turbine output power. The experimental results recommend 6$^{\circ}$as an optimum incidence angle on the turbine blade design. The total-to-total efficiency is steeply decreased when the incidence angle is over $\pm$9$^{\circ}$ from the optimum incidence angle. In the range of less than -10$^{\circ}$incidence angle, 7.5$^{\circ}$ reduction of incidence angle generates 15% decrease of total-to-total efficiency. This result is obtained on the same rotor blade by changing only the rotational speed to minimize the effect of profile and secondary flow loss in the passage. Experimental results show that the change rate of total-to-total efficiency according to the incidence angle change is unchanged although the turbine operates at the off-design condition.

Effects of Composite Couplings on Hub Loads of Hingeless Rotor Blade (무힌지 로터 블레이드의 허브하중에 대한 복합재료 연성거동 연구)

  • In this work, the effect of composite couplings on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor blade is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear, torsional warping are considered in the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton's principle. The blade response and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated by quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap $({\delta}3)$ or $pitch-lag({\alpha}1)$ coupling. It is found that the elastic couplings have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_b/rev$ hub loads. Nearly 10 to 40% of hub loads is reduced by appropriately tailoring the fiber orientation angles in the laminae of the composite blade.

Design optimization and vibratory loads analysis of active twist rotor blades incorporating single crystal piezoelectric fiber composites (단결정 압전섬유작동기를 사용한 능동 비틀림 로터 블레이드의 최적 설계 및 진동하중 해석)

  • This paper presents a design optimization of a new Advanced Active Blade Twist (AATR-II) blade incorporating single crystal Macro Fiber Composites (MFC) and conducts vibratory loads reduction analysis using an obtained optimal blade configuration. Due to the high actuation performance of the single crystal MFC, the AATR blade may reduce the helicopter vibration more efficiently even with a lower input-voltage as compared with the previous ATR blades. The design optimization provides the optimal cross-sectional configuration to maximize the tip twist actuation when a certain input-voltage is given. In order to maintain the properties of the original ATR blade, various constraints and bounds are considered for the design variables selected. After the design optimization is completed successfully, vibratory load reduction analysis of the optimized AATR-II blade in forward flight condition is conducted. The numerical result shows that the hub vibratory loads are reduced significantly although 20% input-voltage of the original ATR blade is used.

Blade Analysis Library Development of Dimension Reducible Modeling and Recovery Analysis for Composite Rotor Blades (복합재 로터 블레이드의 차원축소와 복원해석을 위한 블레이드 해석 라이브러리 개발)

  • In this paper, numerical results of sectional analysis and stress recovery were compared with the results of VABS through the blade analysis library. The results of recovery analysis for one-dimensional model including the stiffness matrix is compared with the calculated three-dimensional stress results of three-dimensionial FEM based on the principle of virtual work. We discuss the configuration of the blade analysis library and compare verifications of numerical analysis results of VABS. Blade analysis library through dimensional reduction and stress recovery is intended to be utilized in conjunction with pre- and post-processing of the analysis program of the composite blade, high-altitude uav's wing, wind blades and tilt rotor blade.

Airfoil Aerodynamic Analysis for the Helicopter Rotor Blade Preliminary Design (헬리콥터 로터 블레이드 예비설계를 위한 에어포일 공력 해석)

  • The aerodynamic analysis of helicopter rotor airfoils was performed to generate the basic data for selection and distribution of airfoils at the helicopter rotor blade preliminary design phase.10 airfoils were chosen among the existing rotor airfoils, and the tabulated aerodynamic coefficients which are proper for the aerodynamic analysis using blade element theory were generated. Considering analysis cost, the simple mathematical models were chosen before the wind tunnel test to generate the aerodynamic characteristic curves($C_{l},C_{m},C_{d}$) in full AoA range($-180^{o}\sim180^{o}$) including the reverse flow region. The essential data necessary to the generation of the complete curves were obtained by using the IBLM(Interactive Boundary Layer Method). The generated aerodynamic characteristic curves agree with experimental results qualitatively. Finally, the aerodynamic characteristics of all 10 airfoils were compared and classified according to their own lift or moment characteristics.
