The term High Speed Machining has been used for many years to describe end milling with small diameter tools at high rotational speeds, typically 10,000 - 100,000 rpm. The process was applied in the aerospace industry for the machining of light alloys, notably aluminium. In recent year, however, the mold and die industry has begun to use the technology for the production of components, including those manufactured from hardened tool steels. With increasing cutting speed used in modern machining operation, the thermal aspects of cutting become more and more important. It not only directly influences in rate of tool wear, but also will affect machining precision recognized as thermal expansion and the roughness of the surface finish. Hence, one needs to accurately evaluate the rate of cutting heat generation and temperature distributions on the machining surface. To overcome the heat generation, we used to cutting fluid. Cutting fluid play a roles in metal cutting process. Mechanically coupled effectiveness of cutting fluids affect to friction coefficient at tool-work-piece interface and cutting temperature and chip control, surface finish, tool wear and form accuracy. Through this study, we examined the behavior of heat generation in high-speed machining and the cooling performance of various cooling methods.

In this paper, the feedforward control with least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed and examined to reduce rotating error by runout of an active magnetic bearing system. Using eddy-current type gap sensor fur control, the electrical runout caused by non-uniform material properties of sensor target produces rotational error amplified in feedback control loop, so this runout should be eliminated to increase rotating accuracy. The adaptive feedforward controller is designed and examined its tracking and stability performances numerically with established frequency response function. The tested grinding spindle system is manufactured with a 5.5 ㎾ internal motor and 5-axis active magnetic bearing system including 5 eddy current gap sensors which have approximately 15 ~ 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of electrical runout. According to the experimental analysis, the error signal in radial bearings is reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when it is rotating up to 50,000 rpm due to applying the feedforward control for first order harmonic frequency, and vibration of the spindle base is also reduced about same frequency.

The real-time simulator of a pneumatic actuation system that is composed of differential PWM signal generator, charge solenoid valve, discharge solenoid valve, actuator, load, and rotational potentiometer is developed using a DSP board and a PC. The simulator receives the control signals from the external controller through the A/D converter, updates the state and output variables of the Pneumatic actuation system responding to the input signals every sampling time, and sends out the output signals through the D/A converter in real time. The user can observe the displacements, velocities, pressures, and mass flows representing the operation of pneumatic actuation system through the PC monitor in real time. Also the user can see the moving images between the pistons and rotating arm realistically in real time. The accuracy of the real-time simulator is verified by the good agreement of the real-time simulation results and the experimental results of the pneumatic actuation system.

A fine stage is developed for the 3-DOF error compensation of a linear axis in order to improve the positioning accuracy. This stage is designed as a planar parallel mechanism, and the joints are based on a flexure hinge to achieve ultra-precise positioning. Also, the effect of Abbe's offsets between the measuring and driving coordinate systems is minimized to ensure an exact error compensation. The mode shapes of the designed stage are analyzed to verify the desired 3-DOF motions, and the workspace and displacement of a piezoelectric actuator (PZT) for compensation are analyzed using forward and inverse kinematics. The 3-DOF error of a linear axis is measured and compensated by using the developed fine stage. A marked improvement is observed compared to the results obtained without error compensation. The peak-to-valley (PV) values of the positional and rotational errors are reduced by 92.6% and 91.3%, respectively.

Radar target identification can be achieved by using various radar signatures, such as one-dimensional(1-D) range profile, 2-D radar images, and 1-D or 2-D scattering centers on a target. In this letter, five 1-D scattering center extraction methods are discussed - TLS(Total Least Square)-Prony, Fast Root-MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification), Matrix-Pencil, GEESE(GEneralized Eigenvalues utilizing Signal-subspace Eigenvalues), TLS-ESPRIT(Total Least Squares - Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique), These methods are compared in the context of estimation accuracy as well as a computational efficiency using a noisy data. Finally these methods are applied to the target classification experiment with the measured data in the POSTECH compact range facility.

Rotating cantilever beams can be found in several practical engineering applications such as turbine blades and helicopter rotor blades. For reliable and economic design, it is necessary to estimate the dynamic characteristics of those structures accurately and efficiently since significant variation of dynamic characteristics resulted from rotational motion of the structures. Recently, Differential Transformation Method(DTM) was proposed by Zhou. This method has been applied to fluid dynamics and vibration problems, and has shown accuracy, efficiency and convenience in solving differential equations. The purpose of this study, the free vibration analysis of a rotating cantilever beam, is to seek for the reliable property of DTM and confidence in the results obtained by this method by comparing the results with that of finite element method applied to linear partial differential equations. In particular, this study is worked by supposing optional T-function values because the equations governing chordwise motion are based on two differential equations coupled with each other. This study also shows mode shapes of rotating cantilever beams for various rotating speeds.

The ball screw preloaded for high nigidity and accuracy increases frictional resistance, therefore, its temperature and positioning error rise. In this paper, 2 diamensional temperature distributions of a ball screw with preload are analyzed according to the rotational speeds and stop times by a finite element method. The theremal behaviors of a ball screw are measured to examine the analyzed datum. The examined results show that the trends of temperature rising and axial distributions in steady state are nearly extimate but the temperature low. The differences of temperature ate seems to be caused by not exact heat transfer coefficients. More than an hour is consumed for calculation by FEM. So the modified lumped method for the real-time estimation of the thermal distribution is proposed. The estimated temperature of a ball serw by the modified lumped method is more exactly estimated than by FEM, nd that method takes less than several millisec. Moreover it can be used to estimate heat transfer coefficients.

When surgical instruments are tracked in an image-guided surgical navigation system, a stereo vision system with high accuracy is generally used, which is called optical tracker. However, this optical tracker has the disadvantage that a line-of-sight between the tracker and surgical instrument must be maintained. Therefore, to complement the disadvantage of optical tracking systems, an internal vision sensor is attached to a surgical instrument in this paper. Monitoring the target marker pattern attached on patient with this vision sensor, this surgical instrument is possible to be tracked even when the line-of-sight of the optical tracker is occluded. To verify the system's effectiveness, a series of basic experiments is carried out. Lastly, an integration experiment is conducted. The experimental results show that rotational error is bounded to max $1.32^{\circ}$ and mean $0.35^{\circ}$, and translation error is in max 1.72mm and mean 0.58mm. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed tool tracking method using an internal vision sensor is useful and effective to overcome the occlusion problem of the optical tracker.
This paper focuses on a model order reduction (MOR) for large-scale rotordynamic systems by using finite element discretization. Typical rotor-bearing systems consist of a rotor, built-on parts, and a support system. These systems require careful consideration in their dynamic analysis modeling because they include unsymmetrical stiffness, localized nonproportional damping, and frequency-dependent gyroscopic effects. Because of this complex geometry, the finite element model under consideration may have a very large number of degrees of freedom. Thus, the repeated dynamic analyses used to investigate the critical speeds, stability, and unbalanced response are computationally very expensive to complete within a practical design cycle. In this study, we demonstrate that a Krylov subspace-based MOR via moment matching significantly speeds up the rotordynamic analyses needed to check the whirling frequencies and critical speeds of large rotor systems. This approach is very efficient, because it is possible to repeat the dynamic simulation with the help of a reduced system by changing the operating rotational speed, which can be preserved as a parameter in the process of model reduction. Two examples of rotordynamic systems show that the suggested MOR provides a significant reduction in computational cost for a Campbell diagram analysis, while maintaining accuracy comparable to that of the original systems.
