  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to predict the optimal bending angles of a running loop for bodily protraction of the mandibular first molars and to clarify the mechanics of molar tipping and rotation. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model was developed for predicting tooth movement, and a mechanical model based on the beam theory was constructed for clarifying force systems. Results: When a running loop without bends was used, the molar tipped mesially by $9.6^{\circ}$ and rotated counterclockwise by $5.4^{\circ}$. These angles were almost similar to those predicted by the beam theory. When the amount of tip-back and toe-in angles were $11.5^{\circ}$ and $9.9^{\circ}$, respectively, bodily movement of the molar was achieved. When the bend angles were increased to $14.2^{\circ}$ and $18.7^{\circ}$, the molar tipped distally by $4.9^{\circ}$ and rotated clockwise by $1.5^{\circ}$. Conclusions: Bodily movement of a mandibular first molar was achieved during protraction by controlling the tip-back and toe-in angles with the use of a running loop. The beam theory was effective for understanding the mechanics of molar tipping and rotation, as well as for predicting the optimal bending angles.

  • The present study investigated local pressure drop in a rotating smooth square duct with turning region. The duct has a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.7mm and a divider wall of 6.0mm or $0.225D_h$. The distance between the tip of the divider and the outer wall of the duct is $1.0D_h$. The Reynolds number (Re) based on the hydraulic diameter is kept constant at 10,000, and the rotation number (Ro) is varied from 0.0 to 0.20. The pressure coefficient distribution $(C_p)$, the friction factor (f) and the thermal performance $({\eta})$ are presented on the leading, the trailing and the outer surfaces. It is found that the curvature of the $180^{\circ}-turn$ produces Dean vortices that cause the high pressure drop in the turning region. The duct rotation results in the pressure coefficient discrepancy between the leading and trailing surfaces. That is, the high pressure values appear on the trailing surface in the first-pass and on the leading and side surfaces in the second-pass. As the rotation number increases, the pressure discrepancy enlarges. In the fuming region, a pair of the Dean vortices in the stationary case transform into one large asymmetric vortex cell, and then the pressure drop characteristics also change.

  • This paper presents an end-point position control of 1-link flexible robot arm by the PID self-tuning fuzzy algorithm. The governing equation is derived by the extended Hamilton's principle and based on the Bernoullie-Euler beam theory. The governing equation is solved by applying the Laplace transform and the numerical inversion method. The arm is mounted on the translational mechanism driven by a ballscrew whose rotation is controlled by dcservomotor. Tip position is controlled by the PID self-tuning fuzzy algorithm so that it follows a desired position. This paper shows the experimental and theoretical results of tip dispalcement, and also shows the good effects reducing the residual vibration of the end-point.

  • The septal extension graft is a very useful method of controlling nasal lengthening and tip projection, rotation, and shape by fixing a graft to the septum, which leads to a strong supporting structure. Enhancing graft stability is important for better long-term outcomes and minimizing complications or relapse, and even more efficient application of these methods is needed for East Asians who lack enough cartilage to be harvested in addition to possessing a weak cartilage framework. In this paper, the methods for overcoming the drawbacks of the septal extension graft, such as instability, a fixed tip, and insufficiency of cartilage, are presented, and the applications of each method for greater satisfaction with surgical outcomes are also discussed.

  • The bio-micro pin has been usually used for the biochemistry analysis. The manufacturing capability of the micro-pin and the their array with the effective and low-cost way is very important and it gives great economical benefits to developers. The micro-pin is composed of the sample channel for holding the liquid with the fixed volume, the flat tip which determines the printing quality and the pin head for preventing the rotation of the pin in the holder. In this study, we have manufactured newly designed micro-pins by the wire-EDM process with special jigs, and analyzed liquid holding and printing characteristics with respect to the variation of the shape and the tip size of the micro-pin.

  • Modern vehicles require a high degree of refinement including good driveability. Vehicle driveability, which becomes a key decisive factor f3r marketability, is affected by many parameters such as engine control and the dynamic characteristics in drive lines. Therefore engine and drive train characteristics should be considered to achieve a well balanced vehicle response simultaneously. This paper describes experimental procedures which have been developed to measure engine torque and investigate shuffle characteristics. To analyze the vehicle dynamic behavior, fractional torques and inertia mass moment of engine, and drive train were measured. Shuffle characteristics during tip-in condition were investigated in an experimental vehicle at 2nd and 3rd gear stages. It was found that the shuffle characteristics were caused by sudden changes of engine torque and have a different vibration frequency with gear stage variation. Inertia mass moment of engine including flywheel rotation showed a key factor for the shuffle characteristics.

The micro-pin is composed of "sample channel" putting liquid into already fixed volume, "flat tip" having connection with printing quantity, and "head part" for preventing it from rotation of pin in the holder. We analyzed out printing variation in accordance with shape and tip size of the micro-pin point channel, In this study, we suggested the manufacturing progress and shape demand condition of the micro-pin which could put $0.2{\mu}{\ell}$-biochemistry material into the sample volume, and will be able to produce the micro-pin which can put $10n{\ell}$-biochemistry material into the sample volume in the future.

  • Insect flight is adapted to cope with each circumstance by controlling a variety of the parameters of wing motion in nature. Many researchers have struggled to solve the fundamental concept of insect flight, but it has not been solved yet clearly. In this study, to find the most effective flapping wing dynamics, we conducted to analyze CFD data on fixing some of the optimal parameters of wing motion such as stoke amplitude, flip duration and wing rotation type and then controlled the deviation angle by fabricating wing tip motion. Although all patterns have the similar value of lift coefficient and drag coefficient, pattern A(pear-shape type) indicates the highest lift coefficient and pattern H(pear-shape type) has the lowest lift coefficient among four wing tip motions and three deviation angles. This result suggest that the lift and drag coefficient depends on the angle of attack and the deviation angle combined, and it could be explained by delayed stall and wake capture effect.

  • Spray characteristics of high pressure injectors for diesel engines have been experimentally studied with special emphasis on the effect of swirl. A constant volume chamber was rotated in order to generate a continuous swirl having the flow field of a solid body rotation, resulting in the linear dependance of the swirl number on the rotating speed of the chamber. Emulsified fuel is injected into the chamber and the developing process of fuel sprays is visualized. The fuel spray developing process in D.I. diesel engine was investigated by this liquid injection technique. The effect of swirl on the spray tip penetration is quantified through modelling. Results show that the spray tip penetration is qualitatively different for low and high pressure injections. For high pressure injection case, a good agreement is achieved between the experimental results and the modeling accounting the effect of swirl. For low pressure injection, a reasonable agreement is obtained. It is found that excessive swirl may cause adverse effect on spray dispersion during the initial combustion period since the spray can not be impinged on chamber wall.

  • In modern industry the requirement of automation of manufacturing process increases so that unmanned system has been popular as an ultimate goal of modern manufacturing process. In unmanned manufacturing process the tool fracture is a very serious problem because it results in the damage of workpieces and can stop the operation of whole manufa- turing system. In this study, image processing technique is used to detect the fracture of insert tip of face milling using multi-point-tool. In order to acquire the image information of fracture shape of rotation insert tip. We set up the optical system using a light beam chopper. In this system we can reduce the image degradation generated from stopped image of rotating insert tip using image restoration technique. We calculated the mean square error to diagnose the condition of tool fracture, and determind the criteria of tool fracture using experimental and staticstical method. From the results of this study we've developed non- contact detection technique of tool fracture using image processing method and proposed the fracture direction of automation and unmanned system considering the optimal time of tool change milling.
