Nuclear rings at centers of barred galaxies exhibit strong star formation activities. They are thought to undergo gravitational instability when sufficiently massive. We approximate them as rigidly-rotating isothermal objects and investigate their gravitational instability. Using a self-consistent eld method, we first construct their equilibrium sequences specified by two parameters: ${\alpha}$ corresponding to the thermal energy relative to gravitational potential energy, and $R_B$ measuring the ellipticity or ring thickness. The density distributions in the meridional plane are steeper for smaller ${\alpha}$, and well approximated by those of infinite cylinders for slender rings. We also calculate the dispersion relations of nonaxisymmetric modes in rigidly-rotating slender rings with angular frequency ${\Omega}$ and central density ${\rho}_c$. Rings with smaller are found more unstable with a larger unstable range of the azimuthal mode number. The instability is completely suppressed by rotation when ${\Omega}$ exceeds the critical value. The critical angular frequency is found to be almost constant at $0.7(G{\rho}_c)^{1/2}$ for ${\alpha}$ > 0.01 and increases rapidly for smaller ${\alpha}$. We apply our results to a sample of observed star-forming rings and confirm that rings without a noticeable azimuthal age gradient of young star clusters are indeed gravitationally unstable.
We present a spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M86 in the Virgo galaxy cluster. Using the spectra obtained from the Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru Telescope, we measured the radial velocities of 25 GCs, the metallicities of 16 GCs, and the ages of 8 GCs in M86. The mean velocity and the vocity dispersion of the GCs are < ${\upsilon}_p$ > = -354 ${\pm}$ 80 km/s and ${\sigma}_p$ = 292 ${\pm}$ 32km/s, respectively. The M86 GC system shows some rotation with a large uncertainty and the velocity dispersion of the blue GC system is 60 km/s larger than that of the red GC system. The mean metallicity and age of M86 GCs are <[Fe/H]> = -1.13 ${\pm}$ 0.47 and = 9.7 ${\pm}$ 4.0 Gyr, respectively. We found one GC younger than 5 Gyr. We discuss the spectroscopic results of the M86 GC system in comparison with the GC systems in other gEs.
In this paper, we reviewed the spindle system's motor and bearing and its mode safety for optimal design of a high speed spindle system that exceeds DmN value of 1,500,000. We could verify that it has a separation margin during critical speed by performing critical speed analysis. Also, we have selected an optimal sensoring installation location and actually manufactured & installed the sensor by identifying the stress concentration position in the axial load through finite element analysis to install the built-in piezo electric type load sensor to the spindle housing that can measure and monitor the machining load during high speed rotation of the spindle. Reproducibility is also verified by calibrating the error through the sensor's sensitivity adjustment after comparing the output between the plate dynamoneters and the load sensor to confirm the reproducibility of the load sensor.
This paper deals with the analysis of the natural frequencies, mode shapes of an axially loaded beam system carrying ends consisting of non-concentrated tip masses and three spring-two mass sub-systems. The influence of system design and sub-system parameters on the combined system characteristics is the major part of this investigation. The effect of material properties, rotary inertia and shear deformation of the beam system is included. The end masses are elastically supported against rotation and translation at an offset point from the point of attachment. Sub-systems are attached to center of gravity eccentric points out of the beam span. The boundary conditions of the ordinary differential equation governing the lateral deflections and slope due to bending of the beam system including developed shear force frequency dependent terms, due to the sub.system suspension, have been formulated. Exact formulae for the modal frequencies and the modal shapes have been derived. Based on these formulae, detailed parametric studies are carried out. The geometrical and mechanical parameters of the system under study have been presented in non-dimensional analysis. The applied mathematical model is presented to cover wide range of mechanical, naval and structural engineering applications.
In this research, we experimentally investigated the sealing performance of elastomeric rotary lip seals for washing machines. In general, NBR is used as a material for elastomeric rotary lip seals in washing machines, but the mixing formula of the rubber material can affect the sealing performance. In this study, we manufactured rotary lip seals using three kinds of NBRs with a different mixing formula, and examined the sealing performance using an acceleration test mode. The results of an SEM investigation into the surfaces of three kinds of specimens showed a much smaller wear volume and better sealing performance for the specimens with smaller particle sizes of mixing composition than for the specimen with the larger. Repeated deformation and recovery by the shaft-to-seal eccentricity on rotation were shown to cause a phase difference in the rubber material, and we measured the recovery ratio to find the influence of this phase difference on the sealing performance. As another method for checking the phase difference, we also measured tan ä, and a lower tan ä was revealed as the recovery ratio increased for each specimen. Specimens with a higher recovery ratio (lower tan ä) were shown to have a better sealing performance. Consequently, specimens with a smaller particle size in the mixing composition had a better sealing performance because they show a higher recovery ratio.
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 in the Virgo cluster. The photometry of the GCs is based on HST/WFPC2 images for the inner region and deep, wide field Washington $CT_1$ CCD images for the outer region. We investigated the color distribution, the radial number density profile, the spatial distribution, and the mean color of the bright blue GCs about the GCs in NGC 4636. We obtained spectra of the GC candidates in NGC 4636 using the Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the SUBARU 8.2m Telescope. We measured the velocities for 105 GCs in NGC 4636. Using the 238 GCs obtained from combining our results with data in the literature, we investigated the kinematics of the GC system of NGC 4636: the rotation, the velocity dispersion, the radial variation, and the orbit. We also investigated the distribution and the radial variation of the metallicities, ages, and alpha-elements of the GCs in NGC 4636 derived using the absorption lines. We compared the GC kinematics of NGC 4636 with those of other six gEs, finding that the kinematic properties of the GCs are diverse among gEs. We found several correlations between the kinematics of the GCs and the global parameters of their host galaxies. Finally we discuss the implication of the results for the formation models of the GC system in gEs, and suggest a mixture scenario for the origin of the GCs in gEs.
Ultrasonic motors using piezoelectric ceramics and brass metal endcaps were fabricated, which is operated by single - phase high frequency. The structure of the ultrasonic motors has the wind-mill type. The stator part consists of a piezoelectric disk and two metal endcaps slotted wind-mill type. According to the piezoceramic disk vibrates as a radial mode, two metal endcaps provide both longitudinal and torsional displacements simultaneously. Because the metal endcaps have a nonsymmetric structure. the principle of the ultrasonic motor is not well understood. The dimension of the ultrasonic motor is diameter in 12.7 mm and thickness in 2.0 mm, and especially the PMN-PT-PZ piezoelectric disk was used. The maximum revolution speed 700 rpm and the maximum torque 0.22 mN.m were obtained. The ultrasonic motor for rotation was Supplied only single phase AC.
We use a compound-cam twin arm structure and random tool access method to achieve a faster ATC (Automatic Tool Changer) system for the accurate position and rotation control of a tool magazine and an exchange am. Based on the data obtained from various sensors, it is possible to follow the sequence of commands in each control step for an exchange arm. However, it is not so easy to reduce the exchange time of the system because of the slow responses of the sensors and execution mode delays of PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) scan time. In this paper, we propose a new programmed limit-switch position control method to obtain the shortest possible delays for the random tool access method and compound-cam twin arm structure. With some experimental results, we have achieved below 0.9sec tool exchange time with the proposed method.
