  • This study was conducted to development of rapid propagation method by leaf cuttings in Hibiscus hamabo native to southern seaside of Korea, and special object of this study was to determine the effects of IAA, IBA, and NAA on rooting in leaf cuttings of H. hamabo. Rooting was promoted by dipping treated with IAA and IBA. And rooting percentage was greatest at 1,000 and 2,000$mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA. At higher concentrations of IAA and IBA, more adventitious roots were developed. Also, IAA at high concentrations (above 2,000$mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) and IBA ranged from 500~2,000$mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ promoted on root number and rootingratio. However, root formation in Hibiscus leaf cuttings inhibited by NAA application.

  • In order to find out the feasibility of producing grafted red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings with root-removed rootstocks, rooting response and subsequent seedling growth was also evaluated. Pinching the top of pepper seedlings for cutting significantly reduced the rooting of cuttings in 10 commercial hot pepper cultivars. Normal rooting was obtained from all commercial cultivars even though the rooting response varied considerably among cultivars. Poor rooting was observed in 'Gukbo' and 'Chungyang'. Rootone treatment significantly promoted rooting in all tested cultivars and the decrease of rooting response caused by pinching could be fully recovered by rootone treatment. Among the ten commercial rootstocks developed for hot pepper grafting, 'Tantan' showed the best rooting response followed by 'Konesian Hot' and 'Wonkwang 1'. Most of these rootstocks, however, showed higher rooting response as compared to the popular commercial cultivars, 'Manit', 'Chungyang', and 'Nokkwang'. Pasting of IBA at cut surface promoted the rooting of pepper cuttings, but the effect was not quite pronounced as compared to rootone treatment.

  • Most of Cudriania tricuspidata Bureau saplings in Korea have been produced by crown division. But the production of Cudriania tricuspidata B. saplings by this method is very low in efficiency and in uniformity. Therefore, to develop Cudriania tricuspidata B. saplings production system by cutting method which is suitable for mass production, several conditions on rooting and growth of cuttings were investigated. The rooting ability of cuttings varied according to temperature on the bed, length, thickness of the hard wood cutting and rooting agent application. Of different concentration of rooting agent, the 5,000 ppm of 1-naphthalenacetic acid(NAA) and Indole butyric acid(IBA) were found to be the highest in rooting of hardwood cuttings; other concentration were in order as follows; 2,500, 1,000 and 10,000 ppm in concentration of rooting agents. The shading ratio of polyethylene film showed the highest rooting ratio of the softwood cuttings at 55%.

  • To define the effects of synthetic auxins on rooting from the ginseng stern cutting and the root growth in diameter after the rooting of the cuttings, stern cuttings with palmate leaves obtained from seedlings and 2-year old ginseng plants were planted in rooting media treated with solutions of the synthetic auxins. All the roots induced from the cuttings were adventitious fibrous roots at first, but a few adventitious roots of the cutting were thickened in diameter to over 2 to 3mm at 120 days after cutting and the rest of them disappeared. IBA was the most effective auxin for rooting and root growth in diameter after rooting from the cuttings. The shape of the roots that thickened in diameter could be divided into two types. Both types of thickened roots were fully lignified at 120 days after cutting and those thickened roots did not dry up or die by July of the next year, however no rhyzomes or shoot primodia were induced from them.

  • This study was conducted to develop an efficient mass propagation method for the mature $Prunus$ $yedoensis$ Matsumura (43 to 58 years old). Cutting was conducted depending on cutting time, auxin treatments (IBA and NAA treatments mixed with talc powder), and cuttings position on shoots in a plastic house equipped with a fog system without heating. Rooted cuttings were transplanted to a nursery bed, and their growth characteristics were investigated in order to check whether the cuttings are successful or not for roadside tree planting. The average rooting rate was highly significant ($P$ < 0.0001) in all treatments: cutting on June 1st (61.4%) was more than two times greater in rooting rate than that on August 1st (23.6%); IBA 1,000 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ (90.8%) and IBA 500 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ (89.2%) showed much greater rooting rates than those of the other treatments; upper part of the cuttings treated with IBA 1,000 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ showed the highest rooting rate, 96.7%. The interactions among treatments in the average rooting rate were also significant. There were significant differences ($P$ < 0.0001) among the auxin treatments in the survival rate of leafed cuttings transplanted to a nursery bed. The average survival rate was 46.5%, and IBA 1,000 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment was the highest in leafed cuttings 79.2%, but most of leafless cuttings were dead. There were significant differences ($P$ < 0.0001) among the cuttings, grafts, and in the seedlings height, diameter at root collar, the number of roots, branches, and leaves, etc., and the cuttings was the best. We can expect a possibility of mass propagation of improved $P.$ $yedoensis$ Matsumura and a high planting survival rate through the transplanting of cuttings to a nursery bed in which the cuttings should be the following conditions: cutting in June to July, use of the upper part of cuttings, IBA treatment, and rooting in August in a cutting-greenhouse equipped with a fog system.

  • This study investigated the effects of rare-earth fertilizer on the shoot cuttings' rooting of Vitex rotundifolia L. and Tamarix chinensis Lour. The shoot cutting test was carried in 2008 and the main results are summarized as follows. The rate of rooting and the average roots increased in both number and length when rare-earth fertilizer is treated in V. rotundifolia and T. chinensis in comparison to those of the untreated control plot. In particular, when rare-earth fertilizer is diluted with water 1/2500, the rooting outstandingly increases. This result is almost similar to the effect of the rooting stimulant, IAA. Although there is no differentiation in its rooting rate according to the density, the rooting of T. chinensis shows a 100 percent effect on in the entire treated plot but not in the untreated control plot, so it is usable as a rooting stimulant. As for shoot cuttings' rooting, depending on the time immersed in diluted solution of rare-earth fertilizer, both V. rotundifolia and T. chinensis showed relatively higher percentages in all treatment plot immersed for 60 minutes than for 10 minutes. In conclusion, considering the results of the rooting percentage and the average number and length of roots of V. rotundifolia and T. chinensis, the shoot cuttings' rooting appeared higher in percentage when they were immersed in the rooting stimulant for sixty minutes with a lower density than 1/2500. This result shows that rare-earth fertilizer can be utilized as an alterative for IAA rooting stimulants currently available in the market.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation and ortet ages on the rooting of Quercus acutissima cuttings. The cuttings taken from 12-week-, 2-year-, 4-year-, and 20-year-old plants were rooted in mid summer in the rooting medium (vermiculite 2 : peatmoss 1 by volume) with or without Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Glomus sp. inocula and IBA under intermittent misting system in an open shed. The average percentages of rooting were about 82%, 49%, 29%, and 13% for cuttings taken from 12-week-, 2-year-. 4-year-, and 20-year-old seedlings, respectively. Pt inoculation, enhanced rooting of cuttings at all age classes, except 12-week-old seedlings, with the highest enhancement(22%) observed in cuttings taken from 20-year-old trees. The highest percentage of rooting in each age group eras 88.9% in 12-week-old seedlings treated with Pt plus 3.000ppm IBA, 75% in 2-Year-old plants with 1,000ppm IBA, 58.3% in 4-year-old plants with 3.000ppm IBA and 22% in 20-year-old plants. The addition of Glomus sp. fungus inoculum failed to enhance rooting. Pt mycorrhizal inoculation enhanced root dry weight, length, and diamter of adventitious roots at cuttings taken from 12-week- and 20-year-old trees, except the cuttings taken from 4-year-old seedlings. Rooted cuttings had more total nitrogen content in the leaves than unrooted cuttings, and the greater rooting response was associated with the higher phosphorus content in the leaves.

  • The present investigation was undertaken to determine if CO2 enrichment promoted rooting and subsequent growth of Lagerstroemia indica L. cuttings. Cutting were taken from the one-year-old semihardwood twigs, and rooted in enclosed propagation frame with enriched CO2 levels (500-2000ppm) regulated by a gas monitor. The base of each cutting was dippid from 500 to 4000ppm naphthalenacetic acid. Roothing was determined after 3 months. CO2 enrichment during roothing increased the rooting percentage and number of roots per cutting, but nontreated cuttings rooted in low percentages producing one or two roots. The length of new shoots and dry weight of whole cuttings in CO2 enrichment were significantly greater than those of the atmospheric controls. The organic and inorganic compounds concentraion were measured as an indication of nutritional state in whole cuttings. As a result of CO2 enrichment, carbohydrate, protein and inorganic compounds(total nitrogen, P2O5, K2O, CaO, MgO) concentration were higher than controls.

  • To investigate the practicality of a small scale softwood propagation plastic film tent and the rooting promoting effect of indole-3-butyric acid(IBA) for northern highbush blueberry, softwood cuttings of 3 varieties (Duke, Elizabeth, Elliot) were made after dipping in the IBA solutions of 100ppm, 300ppm, 500ppm, 1,000ppm for 2 hour, and 3,000ppm for 20 seconds, respectively. Two-way ANOVA confirmed the significant differences in the percentage of rooting of cutting, longest root length and rooting volume index (RVI) induced by IBA treatment, as well as the percentage of rooting of cutting and RVI among examined varieties. In particular, the highly significant difference was observed in th RVI for IBA treatment. However, there was no interactions between the auxin treatments and varieties. Spontaneous rooting ability (control) depends on the varieties, showing that the lowest rooting ability was observed in the 'Duke' (45%) followed by 'Elliot'(85%) and 'Elizabeth' (90%). In addition, the rooting of the examined 3 varieties were enhanced by both of short time (20sec) dipping treatment of low level solutions, and long time (2hr) dipping treatment of high level solution, with the remarkably promoted rooting of the 'Duke' cuttings.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effects of cutting dates and rooting promoters on rooting of the Rhododendron mucronulatum Turcz. The rooting percentage in greenwood cutting was high in June and decreased after July 3, when reproductive growth began. The best rooting percentage(92.5%) occurred when cutting was completed on June 12. There was no difference in rooting potentials between the greenwood straight cutting and the greenwood heel cutting. Cuttings of R. mucronulatum for. albiflora showed high rooting percentage(85%) similar to the cuttings of R. mucronulatum. Dipping cuttings in NAA $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ solution for 15 sec increased the rooting percentage up to 97.5%, and also promoted root growth.
