Effect of Organic Material, Active Carbon and Magnesium on the Growth of Zoysia koreana (잔디생육에 대한 유기물, 활성탄소 및 마그네슘의 효과)

  • Effect pf rape seed oil cake compast (OM) active carbon(C) compound fertilizer (NPK) and magnesium sulfate (Mg) application on Zoysia koreana growth by lysimeter of 50cm soil column filled with a low fertility loam. Effect on growth was in order of OM>OM . NPK interaction> NPK . active carbon and Mg were not effective OM . NPK interaction effect was negative on leaf width and root dry matter yield. OM and OM . NPK interaction were most effective on rhizome growth. Their effect did not change the ratio of growth rates between aerial part and rhizome but change that between aerial part and root. Leaf width was most sensitive to the treatments.

Processing-Node Status-based Message Scattering and Gathering for Multi-processor Systems on Chip

  • This paper presents processing-node status-based message scattering and gathering algorithms for multi-processor systems on chip to reduce the communication time between processors. In the message-scattering part of the message-passing interface (MPI) scatter function, data transmissions are ordered according to the proposed linear algorithm, based on the processor status. The MPI hardware unit in the root processing node checks whether each processing node's status is 'free' or 'busy' when an MPI scatter message is received. Then, it first transfers the data to a 'free' processing node, thereby reducing the scattering completion time. In the message-gathering part of the MPI gather function, the data transmissions are ordered according to the proposed linear algorithm, and the gathering is performed. The root node receives data from the processing node that wants to transfer first, and reduces the completion time during the gathering. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm increases at a greater rate as the number of processing nodes increases.

Differences on the Nitrate Accumulation in Edible Parts of Chinese Cabbage and Radish cultivated by Conventional and Organic Farming Method (일반관행 농법과 유기농법 배추, 무의 가식부위내 $NO-3^-$)

  • In the edible parts of chinese cabbage, the NO-3 accumulation was higher in the outer leaves than in the inner leaves and it was higher in the leaf midrib than in the leaf blade. In Radish, it was higher in the aerial part of the root than in the underground part of root. NO-3 accumulation in edible parts of chinese cabbage of organic farming fertilized with compost 8t/10a was about 4 times higher than those of conventional farming with recommended mineral nitrogen; and was similar to those of conventional farming fertilized with twice the mineral nitrogen rate. But, NO-3 accumulation in radish of organic farming with 8t/10a compost was lower than those of conventional farming with recommended mineral nitrogen. It showed NO-3 content in the edible parts of vegetables should be considered one of several parpmeters to judge a real safety vegetable to be certified by government.

  • In this study we investigated the suitability of horticultural main organic root substrate materials (peatmoss, coir) for the development proper root substrate for working with bulb onion transplanter. We investigated seedling sprout ratio, growth and characteristics (bulk density, root substrate cohesion) those are suitable for mechanical transplanting by mixing with inorganic materials(red clay etc.). Although both seedling growth and root substrate bulk density were similar in peatmoss and coir based root substrates, we found that peatmoss mixing had higher root substrate cohesion compared to coir mixing. We assume that higher cohesion properties of peatmoss based root substrate will give more weight of root part during mechanical transplanting of young onion seedlings in the field. Because of this, we suggest that peatmoss is the appropriate ingredient for developing root substrates for working with bulb onion transplanter.

  • To establish a lawn Zoysia japonica Steud with seeds a win of experiments were conducted for the investigation of seedling root system. The results m summarized m follows; Zoysia japonica and maize elongated mesocotyle in germinating stage. but rye and barley did not. The mesocotyle of Z. japonica seed pushed the elongating coleoptile up throngh the soil, hence could emerge from more deeply planted. The crown roots of Z japonica originated from the coleoptile node. The crown roots of barley originated from the first foliage led node.

A Study of the Nutritional Composition of the Dandelion by Part (Taraxacum officinale) (민들레의 부위별 영양성분 함량 비교)

  • Many studies have presented results about the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale). There has yet to be a study which makes comparisons of nutrients based on the parts of the Dandelion. To identify the nutrient composition by part of dandelion, nutrient contents were analyzed. Dandelions were taken from Songpa-gu in Seoul and the nutrient composition of the flower, leaf and root were measured. The nutrient content of each part was analysed by using the method developed by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). The proximate components(moisture, protein, fat, fiber, ash, and carbohydrates), minerals and vitamins of the dandelion were analysed. The nutrient composition of the dandelions showed many significant differences among the parts when the differences were determined by using Duncan's multiple range test. The leaf contains more protein, ash, Ca, K, Mg, Zn, vitamin A, B$_1$, B$_2$, and C than the other parts. The root has much more fiber, carbohydrate, P and Fe content. The results demonstrate that dandelions could be used as a food source supplement for fiber, Ca, Fe and vitamin B$_2$ which are common nutritional deficiencies in Korea. It is recommended that more research for other bio-functional factors besides nutrients composition is needed to enhance the utilization of the dandelion.

  • The effects of temperature(0, 5, 10 $^{\circ}C$), sawdust removal in root part and packaging conditions on the respiration and keeping qualities were evaluated. Higher respiratory activity, weight loss and stipe elongation were observed at higher temperature. Removal of sawdust part slowed down the rate of stipe elongation with little effect on the respiration rates, and therefore improve the quality preservation. The modified atmosphere packaging of 100g mushroom using hermetically sealing by 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ polypropylene (CPP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) films were effective in preserving the quality such as visual appearance and Hunter L value, and reducing weight loss at 0$^{\circ}C$, 5$^{\circ}C$ and 10$^{\circ}C$ compared to perforated packages.

Antimicrobial effect of calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament in root canal treatment: a literature review - Part II. in vivo studies

  • The first part of this study reviewed the characteristics of calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) and summarized the results of in vitro studies related to its antimicrobial effects. The second part of this review covers in vivo studies including human clinical studies and animal studies. The use of $Ca(OH)_2$ as an intracanal medicament represented better histological results in animal studies. However, human clinical studies showed limited antimicrobial effects that microorganisms were reduced but not eliminated through the treatment, and that some species had resistance to $Ca(OH)_2$. Most of clinical outcome studies supported that there is no improvement in healing of periapical lesions when $Ca(OH)_2$ was applied between appointments. Further studies are required for the antimicrobial effects of $Ca(OH)_2$, and search for the ideal material and technique to completely clean infected root canals should be continued.

Comparison of Growth Characteristics and Ginsenoside Content of Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) Cultivated with Greenhouse and Traditional Shade Facility (비닐하우스와 관행재배 인삼의 생육특성 및 진세노사이드 함량 비교)

  • Growth characteristics, root yield and ginsenoside contents of 3-year-old ginseng in greenhouse shaded by $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain made of aluminum were compared to traditional shade facility in order to develop cultural practice for organic ginseng. Light transmittance ratio in greenhouse with $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain shade was distinctly lower than that of traditional shade from sunrise to 9 a.m., while its ratio in greenhouse was higher than traditional shade since 9 a.m. due to the reflection of light. Air temperature of greenhouse was $1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than that of traditional shade on the first ten days of August due to more reflected light. Root yield of greenhouse was 44% higher than that of traditional cultivation because of the inflow of reflected light and the decrease of disease of Alternaria and Anthracnose by blocking rainfall. Dry matter partitioning ratio of rhizome and lateral root were increased in ginseng cultivated at greenhouse due to longer survival time in leaf than traditional cultivation. Total ginsenoside contents cultivated at greenhouse was decreased in the part of taproot, while it was increased in the part of lateral and fine root compare to traditional cultivation. Individual ginsenoside contents between greenhouse and traditional cultivation showed significant difference more frequent in fine root than taproot and lateral root. Total ginsenoside contents including $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, and $Rg_2$ in whole root of 3-year-old ginseng did not showed significant difference by greenhouse and traditional cultivation.

Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of the Ethanol Extract of Allium victoriallis L. var. platyphyllum

  • This study was conducted to evaluate in vitro antioxidative and antimicrobial properties of ethanolic extracts from Allium victoriallis L. var. platyphyllum (AVP) with 6 different parts. The antioxidative activities of these samples were determined using the 4 separate methods that involved reducing power, DPPH, hydrogen radical scavenging, and lipid peroxidation with use of a $\beta$-carotene/linoleic acid system. The leaf part ethanolic extracts (1,000 ppm) showed the strongest inhibitory potential for reducing power, DPPH, and hydroxyl radicals to 99.8, 49.4, and 52.8%, respectively. Inhibition values of linoleic oxidation were calculated as 58.0, 39.5, and 38.0% for seed, flower, and leaf ethanolic extracts (1,000 ppm), respectively, from AVP. In addition, the ethanolic extracts of the root part showed the most effective antimicrobial activity. The inhibition zones of the root ethanolic extracts ($200\;{\mu}g/disc$) of AVP against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus were 17 and 14 mm, respectively. In a micro-dilution assay, B. cereus, S. aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus exhibited sensitivity to root part ethanolic extracts with an minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) value of 20, 28, and 18 mg/mL, respectively. Therefore, the AVP extracts may be suitable as antimicrobial and antioxidative agents in the food industry.
