  • In foreign country such as U.S.A and Japan, considerable research has been done regarding the spread of smoke in room of fire involvement by using computer. But, in our country it has not been. So, this paper presents a detailed qualitative description of phenomena which occures during typical fire scenarios through numerical analysis. This research, in the view of field model, is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution. And it is planned to analyze governing equation including smoke diffusion equation by numerical analysis with finite volume method and non-staggered grid system. The SIMPLE method for pressure-velocity couple and power-law scheme for convection terms are used. It shows that a plume is formed, hot plume is formed, hot plume gases impinge on the ceiling and they spread across it. then, it eventually reaches the bounding walls of the enclosure. It takes 60s for smoke to fill the enclosure.

  • The present article reports a numerical study on the fire characteristic change by water-mist in under-ventilated compartments. The natural gas and heptane pool fires are used as fire sources, which are located in the bottom center of the 2/5 reduced-scaled model of the ISO 9705 standard room. The fire modeling using the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) is validated by comparison with previously published experimental results. For temperature and combustion gas concentrations at two positions located in the upper layer of compartment, the predicted results with and without water-mist are compared each other. The results show that under the water-mist operation, the predicted temperature and carbon monoxide concentration reduce as $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and about 20%, respectively, compared to those without water-mist.

  • Many pressurization systems are designed and built with the goal of providing a smoke-free escape route in the event of a building fire. A secondary objective is to provide a smoke-free staging area for fire fighters. In the present study, a computer program is developed to calculate pressure loss and flow rate at several building elements such as a room, a ]tabby a staircase and an air supply shaft. By the program as the dosing tool for the pressurization system, the capacity of the injection fan is calculated, and the design method is proposed for the optimization of the fan capacity.

  • There has been an increase in fire/explosion accidents caused by chemical substances used in new small/medium sized construction, reconstruction, or extension sites. There is vast room for improvement, especially in safety training, safety inspection, and selection of countermeasures because training, technicality, and management systems regarding fire/explosion risks in small/medium sized construction sites are very immature in most cases. The purpose of this study is to propose a differentiated technical, educational, and management application plan for preventative management of fire/explosion accidents caused by chemical substances used in small/medium sized construction sites.

  • Namsan road are taxis in the engine room fires (07/14/2011 18:05) in the tunnel, and the driver of the vehicle was 100 passenger car and more than 500 evacuated were disasters. Pole road vehicles within the tunnel if there is a fire tunnel fire occurred at a two-way evacuation difficult and rapid evacuation is difficult and mass casualties are concerned, the number of casualties is feared. In this study, by considering the problems and improve the Namsan 1,2,3 Tunnel In case of fire, the best disaster response is to come up with ways.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the flow patterns and thermal characteristics by computer simulation under the variations of fire strength for Daegu-Pahang Yimgo-4th tunnel, from which flow and heat distributions are predicted in the longitudinal tunnel. Though the results of numerical computations, followings are found; one is that the volume flow rate is discontinuously increasing as closer to fire location, and the other is that a critical design to get faster flow rate is required because of existence of backlayer flow for the high fire strength in view of safety for the people in fire of the tunnel.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate the formation of smoke layer in case of several furniture fires such as trashcan, chair, carpet, sofa, mattress, and wardrobe in a residential room. As a result of the present investigation, the uniformly distributed fire of carpet showed that the ignition and the initial growth period were relatively short while the fully developed period was considerably long. The concentrated fires such as mattress and wardrobe showed that the ignition and the initial growth period were relatively long. The descending time of the interface heights was within 1-3 minutes to reach around 1m. However, the interface height was lowered to 0.25-0.75m above the floor at the time of the maximum temperature.

  • Experimental and numerical studies on the fire characteristics according to the distance between the fire source and sidewall under the over-ventilated fire conditions. A 1/3 reduced ISO 9705 room was constructed and spruce wood cribs were used as fuel. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was used for fire simulations to understand the phenomenon inside the compartment. As a result, the mass loss rate and heat release rate were increased due to the thermal feedback effect of the wall in the compartment fire compared to the open fire. As the distance between the fire source and sidewall was reduced, the major fire characteristics, such as maximum mass loss rate, heat release rate, fire growth rate, temperature, and heat flux, were increased despite the limitations of air entrainment into the flame. In particular, a significant change in these physical quantities was observed for the case of a fire source against the sidewall. In addition, the vertical distribution of temperature was changed considerably due to a change in the flow structure inside the compartment according to the distance between the fire source and sidewall.

  • The main objective of the present study is to investigate the performance characteristics of a ground-source heat pump(GSHP) system with a 130 m vertical and 62 mm nominal diameter U-tube ground heat exchanger. In order to evaluate the performance analysis, the ground-source heat pump connected to a test room with $90\;m^2$ floor area in the Korea Institute of Construction $Technology(37^{\circ}39'N,\;126^{\circ}48'E)$ was designed and constructed. This ground-source heat pump system mainly consisted of ground heat exchanger, indoor heat pumps and measuring devices. The cooling and heating loads of the test room were 5.5 and 7.2 kW at design conditions, respectively. The experimental results were obtained from July 2, 2003 to July 1, 2004. The cooling and heating performance coefficients of the system were determined from the measured data. The average cooling and heating COPs for the system were obtained to be 4.90 and 3.96, respectively. The temperature variations in ground and the ground heat exchanger pipe surface at different depths were also measured.
