  • High performance characteristics are required for rolling bearings and the various functions of bearing are greatly influenced by grease. Recently, higher performance is being demanded of rolling bearing greases for bearing lubrication. Four special greases with different composition such as lithium soap/ester oil, urea/ester oil, urea/ether oil and PTFE/fluorine oil were synthesized to compare the performance of these greases with that of the conventional lithium soap/mineral oil grease. The grease properties were investigated using a series of typical grease testing methods and grease life test. After the life test, the greases were charaterized by FTIR analysis and a microscope. And the iron amount in the greases was analyzed by AAS after ashing. The composition and manufacturing process determined the grease performance. The grease with a base oil of synthetic oil showed higher performance and the urea/ester oil and PTFE/fluorine oil showed about three times longer life as compared with conventional lithium grease.

  • The shot peening treatment were conducted for improving the strength of rolling contact fatigue of machine element like a gear. This paper was undertaken to analyze the influence of shot peening treatment for inner race of ball bearing on the rolling contact fatigue. Shot peening treatment were applied to the full hardened and the carbonitrided bearing. And the rolling contact fatigue life test and X-ray diffraction test were carried out. The results of this study showed that the fatigue life of ball bearing in the clean and the contaminated oil could be improved by shot peening treatment. This effect was found to be more pronounced to the full hardened bearing. These facts might be due to the generation of compressive residual stress and the strain hardening of surface layer by shot peening treatment. The failure of the shot peened bearing were presumed to initiate at surface.

The various functions of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required to improve rolling bearing lubrication. The two conditions for optimum grease synthesis were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) program by using dropping points and OIT values respectively. And the optimized two urea/ether oil greases were synthesized to compare the performance. The typical physical properties of grease were investigated. And life test of these greases was conducted by rolling bearing grease life tester The characteristics of the greases before and after life test were investigated using FTIR, microscope, SEM, TG/DSC, OIT and TAN meter The optimized two greases showed longer life time than typical urea/ether oil grease. • The effective case depth for case-hardened rolling bearing has been discussed. For this purpose, rolling contact fatigue tests for ball bearings built with inner race of various hardness values were conducted until L10 calculating rating life using a bearing life test machine under radial loading. Then, the distribution of residual stress below the inner raceway, which depended on the hardness value, was measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result, the linear relationship was established between the hardness value of the inner race and the theoretical shear stress evaluated at the depth where the residual stress disappeared below the inner raceway. Based on the relationship, it could be found that the factor of safety in bearing manufacturer’s rules for the effective case depth of case hardened rolling bearings was set higher. However, it could be also found that the hardness values at the depth where the maximum shearing stress acted below the raceway surface in a tapered roller bearing hardened by the carburizing process, were not sufficient for preventing plastic deformation under the basic dynamic load rating. Consequently, further efforts were still required to reduce or to disperse the contact load on the material design of a rolling bearing in order to prolong its life.

  • In In this study, we compared the results of a ball bearing life prediction model based on rolling element loads with the results of fatigue life prediction of ball bearings when a stress-based contact fatigue life prediction technique is applied to the ball bearing. We calculate the load acting on each rolling element by the external load of the bearing and apply the result to the Lundberg-Palmgren (LP) theory to calculate ball bearing life based on the rolling element. We also calculate stress-based ball bearing life through contact and fatigue analyses based on contact modeling of the ball and raceway while considering the fatigue test results of AISI 52100 steel. In stress-based life prediction, we use three high-cycle fatigue-determination equations that can predict the fatigue life when multi-axis proportional loads such as rolling-slide contact conditions are applied. These equations are derived from the stress invariant and critical plane methods and the mesoscopic approach. Life expectancy results are compared with those of the LP model. Results of the analysis indicated that the fatigue life was predicted to be lower in the order of the Crossland, Dang Van, and Matake models. Of the three, the Dang Van fatigue model was found to be the closest to the LP life.

  • The objective of this paper is to introduce the standard of evaluation methods and fatigue test for linear motion rolling bearing. In particular, attention well be given to the list of evaluation and fatigue results in this paper. The life of a linear motion rolling bearing is given by the length of distance covered between the connection parts before the first evidence of fatigue develops in the material of one of the raceways of rolling elements. The main factors that contribute to fatigue failures include: Number of load cycles experienced; Range of stress experienced in each load cycle; Mean stress experienced in each toad cycle; Presence of local stress concentrations.

  • Rolling element bearing fatigue life can be significantly reduced by debris particles in lubricants. The debris particles cause raceway surface dents that initiate early fatigue damage. Optical interferometry has been found to be the best method for characterizing bearing raceway debris dent damage. This technique is used to determine the important features, sizes and density of dents. The resulting data file is then used to determine bearing fatigue life. Tests show that bearings manufactured by different processes and material types are affected differently by debris damage and that these differences must be considered by life prediction methodologies. Bearings made by a specific enhanced process can significantly resist the deleterious effects of debris damage and outperform bearings made by other means.

  • Rolling bearings are classified one of the most important machine elements. The various function of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required to improve bearing lubrication. Three urea/ether oil greases with different composition were synthesized to compare the performance of these greases. The typical grease physical properties were investigated, and life test of these greases was conducted by FE-9 grease life tester. The grease with higher content of the thickener showed higher performance. After these preliminary test, twelve greases were synthesized and evaluated the performance of dropping point and OIT value. And optimized conditions for grease synthesis were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) using dropping point and OIT value respectively. The optimized grease using OIT value showed longer grease life than that using dropping point. Two greases were synthesized following the optimum synthesis conditions by means of OIT value. Then grease life and other properties of these greases were investigated. These two greasaes showed longer grease life than typical urea/ether oil grease.
