Using emulsion lubricant whose cooling effect and incombustibility are good and which is economical, I investigated lubricative mechanism and the behavior of scattered particles in the elastic fluid lubrication region with the line contact between rollers and plates and the light interference system. The results of the study are as follows: (1) The flow in the squeeze oil film is considered as comparatively wide clearance and narrow one, and in the former case the effect of the distribution of particles and the velocity on the flow. In the latter case, emulsion particles stay in the clearance an the oil film changes with the decrease of the oil film thickness. (2) In the wide clearance the velocity difference of the flow O/W or W/O emulsion is inverse proportional to the particle size. In the narrow clearance the distribution of the remained drops is different from one another and the scattered particles change more easily in O/W type than in W/O type. (3) At the beginning of the EHL the stagnation region with slow flowing velocity exists and the behavior at the region is different depending on the particle size. (4) By observing the dischromatic light interference line, emulsion oil passing through EHL region and the crack behavior at the beginning of EHL were found.

Mooring fittings mean various devices and fittings to safely fasten vessels to quays, jetties and sea-floating buoys, etc. They include mooing winches, capstans, chocks, fairleads, guide rollers, bollards, and bitts. Not only the seats and reinforced parts for the installation of fittings but also ropes and chains for mooring and chain stoppers can be also considered. Because of damages to mooring fittings during mooring directly related to large-scale accidents such as the drifting of vessels, mooring fittings with strength appropriate for the physical features of the vessels must be installed. The reinforcement of the vessels on which the mooring fittings are installed must be designed to withstand the loads transferred from the fittings as well. Also mooring fittings with efficient strength should be required because damaged ships lead to sea pollution such as oil or fuel oil spillage. This study has been performed by the Finite Element Method for two aspects of closed chocks which are divided into structure-supporting shapes and working load. In the case of structure-supporting shapes, they have been performed in the field of sheet and bulwark. As for working load, it has been analyzed according to working load direction such as chock's side and below. At first, strength analysis for unique closed chocks has been carried out by using the Finite Element Method, they are applied for the situation when vessels pass by the panama canal. And then the experiment has been done to verify the analyzed date obtained by FEM. The experimental results were found to be similar to the numerical results with up to 16% difference. On the basis of the results obtained, standardization has been carried out by the Finite Element Method for various sizes of closed chocks.

It is important to pay careful attention to construction backfill for the structural integrity of concrete box culvert. The stability of the surrounding soil is important to the structural performance of most culverts. Good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with big capacity is as effective as good backfill materials to increase the structural integrity of culvert. However structural distress of the culvert could be occur due to the excessive earth pressure by dynamic compaction load. In this study, 16 box culverts were constructed with various compaction materials and construction methods. Three types of on-site soils such as subbase, subgrade and roadbed materials were used as backfill materials in the test program. Compaction methods were adapted based on the site conditions. In most cases, dynamic compaction rollers with 10 to 16 ton weights were used and vibration speed were applied from 2400 to 2500 rpm for the great compaction energy. Some backfill compactions with good quality soils were carried out to examine the effect of EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) panels with changes of compaction thickness. This paper presents the main results of the research conducted to access the engineering performance of the backfill materials. The characteristics of earth pressures are discussed. It is observed that subgrade and roadbed materials are needed more careful compaction than subbase materials. It is shown that EPS panels are effective to mitigate dynamic lateral earth pressure on the culverts. It is also obtained that the dynamic pressure depends on the soil properties. In addition, the coefficient of dynamic earth pressure (K$\sub$dyn/=ΔP$\sub$H/ ΔP$\sub$V/) during compaction is discussed.

In this study, lignin/chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride)(CPVC) blended fibers have been produced for the development of low-cost carbon fiber. Carbon fiber manufacturing was accomplished through stabilization and carbonization process. The lignin/CPVC blended fibers were prepared by wet spinning method. Dimethylacetamid e(DMAc) and cychlohexanone in a ratio of 5:1(wt%) was employed as co-solvent. The ratio of lignin/CPVC was prepared at 0/10, 1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6, and 5/5(wt%). The spinning solution was extruded at a rate of 0.1 to 0.4ml/min according to the blending ratio. The speed of the rollers was the same for all ratios(draw ratio=1). Analysis of fiber cross-section by scanning eletron microscopy(SEM) showed that as the lignin ratio increased in the same coagulation bath and distilled water, the pore size of the spinning fiber decreased. Therefore, the highest tensile strength of the blending fibers was 6.3±1.2MPa at the 5/5 ratio. The carbon fiber also showed the best tensile strength of 120.78±2.43MPa at 5/5 ratio.

In this paper the solidification phenomena at the molten pool has been modeled and simulated in terms with the one dimensional unsteady-state heat transfer of the solid and molten phase and the pressure distribution in the solid phase for the twin-roller continuous casting of Sn-15% Pb. The further purpose of this study was to effectively analyze the thermal and mechanical deformation of roll applying the results of the heat transfer and the pressure distribution to the boundary conditions. The strip thickness of rapidly solidified metallic strip decreases with increasing angular velocity of the roller and with increasing initial roll gap. For this reason the roll spacing and angular velocity of the rolls are considered to be main variables. The recommended optimal casting regimes for continuous strip dimensions is near 0.8mm-1.0mm in thickness at the given angular velocity .omega.=2.0 rad/sec. Results of the experiment using Sn-15% Pb are compared with model predictions. The calculated roll deformation has been in good agreement with the observed value of roll deformatiion. All the deformation. All the deformation of the roller is within the elastic range, the plastic yielding are not occured. However, these elastic stresses are sufficient to take place of the shortened roller life by the thermal fatigue and a notch fatigue. The higher cooling rates were obtained by a twin-roller quenching technique. Also the quenched microstructure of the rapidly solidified shell was verified.

The paper proposes a multi-body dynamic simulation to numerically evaluate the generated axial force(G.A.F) and plunging resistant force(P.R.F) practically related to the shudder and idling vibration of an automobile. A numerical analysis of two plunging types of CV joints, tripod joint(TJ) and very low axial tripod joint(VTJ), is conducted using the commercial program DAFUL. User-defined subroutines of a friction model illustrating the contacted parts of the outboard and inboard joint are subsequently developed to overcome the numerical instability and improve the solution performance. The Coulomb friction effect is applied to describe the contact models of the lubricated parts in the rolling and sliding mechanisms. The numerical results, in accordance with the joint articulation angle variation, are validated with experimentation. The offset between spider and tulip housing is demonstrated to be the critical role in producing the 3rd order component of the axial force that potentially causes the noise and vibration in vehicle. The VTJ shows an excellent behavior for the shudder when compared with TJ. In addition, a flexible nonlinear contact analysis coupled with rigid multi-body dynamics is also performed to show the dynamic strength characteristics of the rollers, housing, and spider.

Due to the development of construction technology, there is a considerable increase in the number of skyscrapers in the world. Accordingly, there are rapid growing requests about maintenance systems such as cleaning, painting, and monitoring the processes of facade in highrise buildings. However, it is extremely dangerous working the walls of high-rise buildings, and crashes from buildings have accounted for large proportion of constructional accidents. An alternative solution must be developed with the commercialization of automatic robot systems. For the last decade, interest in developing robots for cleaning and maintenance in facade of highrise buildings has continuously increased. The use of automatic robot systems can be expected to reduce accidents and decrease labor costs. In this paper, we propose a new kind of cleaning mechanism. We have designed and manufactured various cleaning tools for different types of facades with economic commercialization. The cleaning cycle, size, and intensity will be determined by economic constraints as well. The final goals are to design and manufacture tools and robots that can clean facades efficiently and rapidly even in dangerous places. The cleaning tool systems consist of nozzles, brush rollers, and squeezing devices. Furthermore, these tools and robots perform each process utilizing the systems of built-in guide types and gondola types for building maintenance. The performance of the proposed cleaning tools is evaluated experimentally; however additional study should be necessary for safer and more stable commercialization.

The lateral behavior of the moving web is critical to the quality of the web products. The alignment of the rollers carrying the web is found to be one of important factors to the lateral behavior of the moving web. But, the study on the effect of the tilting roller in the direction of the normal to the moving web on the lateral behavior has not been reported in the literature yet. For example, the contact roller often contacts the winding roll in a tilted fashion and causes the lateral motion of the winding web, which induces the offset on the wound roll. The lateral dynamics of the moving web induced by a tilted roller in normal direction of a web is investigated in this paper. The two-dimensional dynamic model developed by Shelton is extended to investigate the effect of a titled roller in a normal direction of the moving web on the lateral motion of the moving web. New boundary conditions are developed to solve the extended model. Computer simulation study proved that the model developed can be used to predict the lateral motion of the moving web ? to a tilted roller in normal direction of the moving web. The lateral deflection is increased exponentially a the tilting angle is increased. As the length of web span is increased, the amount of lateral deflection was increased almost linearly for the same tilting angle. The lateral dynamics turned out to be almost independent to the operating tension. The model developed can be used to solve the offset problem of the staggered winding and also to design a new web guiding mechanism.
PAN precursor fibers were produced via wet-spinning process, and effects of polymerization and spinning processes, especially the stretching process, were investigated on mechanical properties and micro-morphologies of precursor fibers. An increase in molecular weight, dope solid and densification and a decrease in surface defects were possible by controlling polymerization temperature, the number of heating rollers for densification and the jet stretch ratio, which improved the mechanical properties of precursor fibers. The curves for strength, modulus, tensile power and diameter as a function of stretch ratio can be divided into three stages: steady change area, little change area and sudden change area. With the increase of stretch ratio, the fiber diameter became smaller, the degree of crystallization increased and the structure of precursor fibers became compact and homogeneous, which resulted in the increase of strength, modulus and tensile power of precursor fibers. Empirical relationship between fiber strength and stretch ratio was studied by using the sub-cluster statistical theory. It was successfully predicted when the strengths were 0.8 GPa and 1.0 GPa under a certain technical condition, the corresponding stretch ratio of the fiber were 11.16 and 12.83 respectively.

With income growth and "well-being" trends, sales of corn has been increased recently. Corns are processed at processing facilities on the main production site. Corn processing steps include removing bract, steaming, vacuum packing, and storing. To replace manual corn bract removing, some bract removing machines were imported and used. However, the machines were abandoned shortly, because of high damaging ratio of corns. In this research, factors of successful bract removing was studied with rotating rollers and air-injection nozzles to develop corn bract removing system. The test device was composed of a cylindrical roller, an air spray nozzle, a regulator, and a motor. Designing factors were roller type, diameter of air spraying nozzle, spraying angle, and spraying pressure. The measured factors were bract removing rate and damaging rate. It was found that optimum cylindrical roller surface shape was cylindrical roller and linear grove roller. This roller shape produced lowest damaging rate. Test results of the efficacy of preprocessing showed that the air spraying after preprocessing produced highest performance. The rotational speed and inclination of the roller didn't affect the bract removing performance. Optimum injection angle of the air jet nozzle was $70^{\circ}$. To increase bract removing rate and to reduce corn damage, required injection pressure and injection nozzle diameter were decided to less than 0.4 MPa and 2.5 mm, respectively. More than 3 times of nozzle passing produced good bract removing performance and there were no significant difference between the number of passing times.
