The Compaction of fill dam is very important for increasing of the safty of dam. Vibration roller is used for the compaction of pervious materials such as sand and gravel. The principal objects of this study are to give a comstruction criteria of vibration roller and to find out the relationship between dry density and permeabity of pervious soil after compaction. The results in this study are summerized as follows. 1.The relationship between maximum dry density (Υdmax) and optimum moisture content(Wo) of modified compaction test is Υdmax=2. 74-0. 064w0 2.The maximum dry density decrease with increasing fine particle(n) and the relative formular is n==ae-brdmax 3.The maximum dry density is influenced more by passing rate of number 200 sieve than 4 sieve. 4.The coefficient of permeability are similar when the degrees of compaction are equal even though the spreading thickness of soil are different. 5.The coefficient of permeability(K)is greatly influence by fine particle passing number 200 sieve, and those relationship is inversely proportionate. 6.The K values of pervious soil are from 10-0 cm/sec to 10-4 cm/sec when degree of compaction by a modified method is from 90 to 95percent. 7.The coarser material is little influenced on the permeability with different density. 8.The increasing rate of permeability with decreasing degree of compaction is more influened by fine pacticle than number 200 sieve. When degree of compaction decrease from 100 percent to 90 percent the K values of SM and GM increase about 20 times but GW increase 6 times only. 9.The effect of compaction by vibration roller is greatly influenced by 6 passes and the increasing rate of the effect is decraased at 8 passes. 10. In order to get the degree of compaction of 95 percent or more, 6 to 8 passes of roller are generall required with 30 cm thickeness of soil for 4.5 ton to 6.5 ton vibration roller and 7 to 8 passes is required with 50cm thickness for 8 to 12 ton roller.
To increase the structural integrity of concrete box culvert good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with bi9 capacity is as effective as good backfill materials. It is needed for effective compaction that a compaction roller closes to concrete structure with high frequency. However structural distress of the culvert could be occur due to the excessive earth pressure by great dynamic compaction load. To investigate the characteristics of Induced stress by compaction, a box culvert was constructed with changing cushion materials and compaction methods. Two types of cushion material such as tire rubber chip and EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) were used as cushion panels and they are set on the culverts before backfill construction. Laboratory test result of cushion material says that the value of dynamic elastic modulus of rubber is lesser than that of EPS. On the other hand, material damping of rubber material is greater than that of EPS. In most case, dynamic compaction rollers with 10.5 ton weights were used and vibration frequency was applied 30Hz for the great compaction energy. This paper presents the main results on the characteristics of dynamic earth pressures during compaction. The amounts of induced dynamic pressures$(\Delta\sigma\;h)$ by compaction are affected with construction condition such as compaction frequency, depth of pressure cell, distance between roller and the wall of culvert and roller direction. Based on the measured values dynamic lateral pressure on the culverts, it could be said that orthogonal direction of roller to the length of culvert is more effective to compaction efficiency than parallel direction.
Compaction is known to critically affect pavement performance. Due to its importance, a theoretical modelling of compacted density in the term of number of roller coverages is attempted by assuming compaction process essentially identical to pavement rutting. Excellent data fittings by the developed equation may prove the validation of assumptions made as well as justification of its use. According to the derived equation, a plot of density difference with respect to number of roller coverages in the logarithmic scale Produces a linear relationship. However, this linearity is turned out to be deviated by cooling effect, change of amplitude and frequency. Investigation of these three factors proposes a new generalized compaction density equation, which shows a promising future. By applying this general formula, the equations for the number of roller coverages required and the final compaction density obtained for a particular compaction project is derived first time in compaction research.

Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement (RCCP), is a type of pavement using compaction roller and asphalt finisher on concrete mixture that contains low amount of water. RCCP strength and durability are greatly affected by compaction level. Quality control is performed by ensuring the degree of compaction at site based on dry density. In the field, Modified Proctor Test is used in order to obtain optimum dry density. However, there is no clear compaction curve analysis criteria of Modified Proctor Test for RCCP. In this study, compaction curve built by three samples of Modified Proctor Test was produced and it was used to compare with compaction curve contented lower number of samples (one and two samples) in order to analyze their reliability. Thus, a conclusion was drawn from the results; by comparing to the result from Modified Proctor Test of three samples, the use of two samples represented result with only 0.5% of error which means the reliability is 99.5%.

Roller-Compacted Concrete Pavement (RCCP) is a type of pavement that shares conventional concrete pavement material characteristics and asphalt pavement construction characteristics. Even though RCCP is compacted in the same way and have similar aggregate gradation to asphalt pavements, its materials and structural performance properties are similar to those of conventional concrete pavement. With cement hydration and aggregate interlock, Roller-Compacted Concrete or RCC can provide strength properties equal to those of conventional concrete with low cement content. Therefore, compaction ratio of RCC can highly influence on its strength. In general, 95% of compaction ratio is required for proper strength development. RCC strength can be highly influenced by compaction energy which depends on compaction equipment and compaction method. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between compressive strength and compaction ratio of RCC. RCCP specimens were produced at different compaction ratio by using different compaction methods and energies. The compaction ratio was defined by the ratio of the specimen's dry density and its maximum dry density. The maximum dry density was obtained from Modified Proctor test. 28 days compressive strength corresponding to each compaction ratio case was tested. Finally, the relationship between compressive strength and compaction ratio can be analyzed. For application of roller-compacted concrete in domestic construction site, the relationship is important for field compaction management.

The roller compacted concrete (RCC) is supposed to be isotropic, whereas the compaction of this material, which is achieved using the same machines used for the soil, appears only unidirectional, making the RCC an anisotropic material. In this experimental work, the influence of the phenomenon of compaction on the isotropy of the RCC is studied. This study was carried out through an evaluation of the compressive strengths and ultrasonic tests which were used for measurements of the elastic modulus and the dynamic Poisson's ratio of the RCC as well as a qualitative judgement of the RCC aspect at the hardened state. The results of this work proved the anisotropy of the RCC and they showed the sensitivity of the mechanical strengths and the elastic modulus to the compaction direction.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of reinforcement for nearly saturated soft clay compaction. The effectiveness was investigated by roller compaction test using nearly saturated clay specimens. The nearly saturated condition was obtained by submerging clay in the water for 12 hours. High water content specimens were compacted in plane strain condition by a steel roller. A specimen was compacted by four 5 cm horizontal layers. Specimens were prepared fur both reinforced and unreinforced cases to evaluate the effectiveness of reinforcement. Used reinforcement is a composite consisted of both woven and non-woven geotextile. The composite usually provides drainage and tensile reinforcement to hi인 water-contented clay so that it increases bearing capacity. Therefore, large compaction load can be applied to reinforced clay and it achieves higher density effectively. The reinforcement also increases compaction efficiency because it reduces the ratio between shear and vertical forces during compaction process. The maximum vertical stress on the base of specimen usually decreased with higher compaction thickness. The reinforcement increases soil stiffness under the compaction roller and it initiates stress concentration. As a result, it maintains higher vertical stress level on the base of specimen that provides better compaction characteristics. Based on test results, it can be concluded that the reinforcement is essential to achieve effective compaction on soft clay.

The compaction of core zone of the fill dam is very important foe increasing of the Strength of soil mass and reduction of permeability of the core. The principal objects of this study are to give the construction criteria of tamping rollers and to find out the relationships between density and permeability of soil after compaction. The results in this study are summarized as follows. 1. The core zone of fill dam should be compacted more than 8 passed because the compaction effects of clayey soil increase sharply in about 8 passes of roller. 2. The coefficient of permeability (K) increases with the thickness of compaction of soil even though the density is same. 3. The effect of compaction increases with the quantity of coarse materials such as coarse sand and gravel. 4. If D values change from 100 percent to 98 percent and from 100 percent to 95 percent, K values become 2 times and 5 times of initial K value respectively. 5. The coefficient of permeability in the field soil is very high comparing with the result of laboratory test at the same 100 percent compaction ratio, but differences between both results decrease with the decrease of compaction ratio. 6. Thickness of soil layer for the compaction should be increased for heavier compaction machine. 7. In order to get the compaction ratio of 98 percent or more, 10 to 12 passes of roller is generally required with the thickness of soil from 20cm to 30cm.

A gyratory compactor was developed to reflect the field compaction roller, which is commonly used in road construction. Unlike the compaction of the proctor using a conventional impact load, the gyratory compactor simulated the field roller compaction characteristics using the compressive force by the roller weight and the shear force through the rotation of a roller. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear stress and density change characteristics during compaction, which are difficult to obtain in the existing compaction process of the proctor, and to utilize it as a basic data for road design. The compaction characteristics of sand and subgrade soils were also analyzed and evaluated using the gyratory compactor. The compaction characteristics obtained using the gyratory compaction are basically the number of gyrations, height of the specimen, compaction density, void ratio, degree of saturation, and shear stress. As the number of gyrations increased, the height of the specimen decreased, the compaction density increased, the void ratio decreased, the degree of saturation increased, and the shear stress tended to increase. The shear stress of the compacted specimens started at 200 kPa in the initial stage of compaction and increased to approximately 330 to 350 kPa at 50 gyrations. The compaction density, degree of saturation and shear stress tended to increase with increasing water content in the same specimens. Compaction using turning compaction has the advantage of measuring the physical properties required for road design, such as density and shear stress, so that more engineering road design will be possible if it is reflected in road design.

The compaction process using vibrating rollers in road construction is essential to increase soil stiffness in earthworks. Currently, there is no clear standard for the operation method of the compaction roller during compaction. Although simple quality inspection techniques have been developed, plate load test (PLT) and field density test (FDT) are the most frequently used test methods to evaluate the degree of compaction during road construction as the most frequently used quality inspection methods. However, both inspection methods are inefficient because they cannot perform quality inspection in all sections due to time and cost reasons. In this study, we analyzed how the operating conditions of vibrating rollers affect the compaction quality. An intelligent quality management system, which is a currently developed and commercialized technology, was used to obtain quality inspection results in all sections. As a result of the test, it was analyzed that the speed and vibration direction of the compaction roller had an effect on the compaction degree, and it was found that the compaction direction had no effect on the compaction degree.
