A Study on Design Approach of Inverse Cam Mechanism (Inverse Cam Mechanism 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Cam mechanism is one of the common devices used in lots of automatic machinery. This paper introduces to an inverse cam mechanism. The inverse cam mechanism has a reverse structure as compared with common cam mechanism. For shape design of the inverse cam the approach used in this paper is an instant velocity center method that find the contact point between cam and roller at any contact time. And a computer program is developed for shape design and simulation by visual $C^{++}$ language. As the results, this paper presents two examples for the shape design of the inverse cam mechanism in order to prove the accuracy of the design procedures.

  • In recent years, RGM(roller gear mechanism) systems, wherein one of the gears of a meshing gear pair is replaced with pins or rollers, have been reintroduced, which is a consequence of, and therefore a reflection of, the rapid advances made in manufacturing technology. Three RTG(roller track gear) systems for arbitrary path transportation (e.g., L-, O-, U-, and S-shaped tracks) were constructed using two out of three RGM systems, namely, the CRP(cam rack pinion), CRG(cam ring gear), and RPG(roller pinion gear) systems, and are introduced in this paper. We also present three ways to prevent the intersection and non-contact phenomena at the teeth in the vicinity of the conversion point between two joined RGM systems.

  • The subsurface stress field beneath the roller's contacting surface due to the contact pressure in lubricating condition has been calculated. Main purpose of this study in view of engineering is to prove the validity of the numerical profile roller presented by Koo et al. The Love's rectangular patch solution was used to obtain the subsurface stress field. The stress field of the numerical profile roller was compared with the one of the existing dub-off profile roller The analysis results show reduced subsurface stresses for the numerical profile roller.

  • Contact pressure occurs whenever two surfaces contact between cam and roller. Especially excessive pressure peaks occur at the ends of the contact region. Such as scuffing or pitting will be induced when these operating conditions continuously occur on the surface. Camber effect is given to reduce damage by changing the shape of roller. The objective of this paper is to calculate contact pressure distribution by using a contact analysis considering camber and tilting angle. These results predict that camber effect of all machine components have influence on contact pressure distribution.

  • A barrel cam is used as a very important part of an index drive unit. The index drive unit must have an intermittent-rotational motion. The barrel typed cam and roller gear mechanism has the advantages of high reliability to perform a prescribed motion of a follower. This paper proposes a new method for the shape design of the barrel cam and also a CAD program is developed by using the proposed method. As defined in this paper, the relative velocity method for the shape design calculates the relative velocity of the follower versus cam at a center of roller, and then detemines a contact point by using the geometric relationships and the kinematic constraints, where the direction of the relative velocity must be parallel to a common tangential line at the contact point of two independent bodies, i.e. the cam and the follower. Then, the shape of the cam is defined by the coordinate transformation of the trace of the contact points. This paper presents shape design of the barrel cam in order to prove the accuracy of the proposed methods

  • Cam mechanism is one of the common devices used in many automatic machinery. Specially cylindrical cam generates three dimensional motions. Thus, the shape design procedures must have high accuracy. This paper proposes the shape design procedure for a cylindrical cam and follower mechanism using a relative velocity method. The relative velocity method and the coordinate transformation are used to find a contact point between the cam and the follower. Also, the full shape of the cylindrical cam can be generated by using the geometric relationships and the contact constraints. As a result, this paper presents an example for the shape design of the cylindrical cam in order to prove the accuracy of the design procedures.

  • In this paper, and optimum profile of a cam being used in a VTR Deck mechanism is designed by the response surface analysis. The objective function of the design is to reduce driving torque of the pinch roller system that is used to compress video tape to the capstan motor axia. The pinch roller system that will be designed is modeled using the general purpopse mechanism analysis program DADS. The computer model is compared with the physical system for reliability. A model function to represent relationship between design variables and the objective function is estimated by the response surface analysis. Once the model function is reliably estimated the optimal design is carried out using the model function and each design variable's boundaries. To verify improvement of the pinch roller system, a prototype for the pinch rooler system is made and tested. From the test result, an optimum cam profile to resuce driving torque of the pinch roller system is verified.

  • This paper reports on the development of a roller-cam clutch mechanism. This mechanism can transfer bidirectional torque with high backdrivability, as well as increase actuation energy efficiency, in electrical exoskeleton robots. The developed mechanism was installed at the robot knee joint and unclutched during the swing phase which uses less metabolic energy, thereby functioning as a passive joint. The roller-cam clutch aimed to increase actuation energy efficiency while also producing high backdrivability by generating zero impedance for users during the swing phase. To develop the mechanism, mathematical modeling of the roller-cam clutch was conducted, with the design having more than three safety factors following optimization. Titanium (Ti-6AL-4V) material was used. Finally, modeling verification was done using ANSYS software.

  • In this paper, contact between the coupler-roller and guide in elevator door mechanism is modeled and analyzed with DADS 3D program. The contact force of coupler-roller is an important factor for impact and noise reduction when doors of elevator are opened or closed. To minimize the maximum contact force, an optimal cam profile for the door guide is suggested. To find an optimal shape of the guide, several types of motion curve are tested with DADS contact module.

  • The flash temperature distribution on the contact surfaces between cam and roller-follower mechanism was analysed numerically. The elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure and film thickness were used to get the accurate analysis results. The temperature distribution was obtained by numerical integration by making use of Carslaw and Jaeger's formulation to the whole contact surfaces. The maximum flash temperature was increased with both the increasing slip ratio of the contact surface and increasing external load Profile of the temperature distribution was affected by the sliding velocity of the surface.
