  • The endless hot rolling has been focused as an innovative process technology for increasing the productivity drastically and reducing the imperfection of quality in hot rolled steel strip. To realize it in actual mill, a lots of new facilities such as bar coiler, movable LASER welder and high speed strip shear should be equipped. And also it is necessary to develop the control technique for changing the roll gap and rolling speed during rolling, which is named as Flying Gap and Speed Change control technology. To prevent a strip rupture caused by excessive tension, it is very important to minimize fluctuations in strip thickness and intension during FGSC control. In this paper, the mathematical model for FGSC control algorithm was suggested and dynamic simulation is performed to accertain the effect of suggested control method on fluctuations in strip thickness and tension. For endless hot rolling simulation, a lots of FGSC control situations, for instance - strip thickness change from strip to strip - strip width change from strip to strip - carbon content change from strip to strip are considered.

  • The SWCNTs network are formed on various plastic substrates such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polyimide (PI) and soda lime glass using roll-to-roll printing and spray process. Selective patterning of carbon nanotubes film on transparent substrates was performed using a femtosecond laser. This process has many advantages because it is performed without chemicals and is easily applied to large-area patterning. It could also control the transparency and conductivity of CNT film by selective removal of CNTs. Furthermore, selective cutting of carbon nanotube using a femtosecond laser does not cause any phase change in the CNTs, as usually shown in focused ion beam irradiation of the CNTs. The patterned SWCNT films on transparent substrate can be used electrode layer for touch panels of flexible or flat panel display instead indium tin oxide (ITO) film.

  • This study focuses on the microstructural development of 99% magnesium alloy sheet manufactured using twin roll casting (TRC) process. Herein, a plate with a thickness of 5 mm was manufactured using the TRC process, homogenization heat treatment was performed at 400℃ for 2-32 h, and finally, the change in microstructure was evaluated via optical microscopy and textural analysis. The results suggest that the plate manufactured using the TRC process was not destroyed and was successfully rolled into a plate. Microscopic observation suggested that the dendritic cast structure was arranged along the rolling direction. And the central layer of the rolled plate, where was present in a liquid state at the beginning of rolling, solidified later during the TRC process to form central segregation. The initial cast structure and inhomogeneous structure of the plate were recrystallized by homogenization heat treatment for only 2 h, and it was confirmed that the segregated part of the central layer became homogeneous and recrystallization occurred. Grain growth occurred as the heat treatment time increased, and secondary recrystallization occurred, wherein only some grains were grown. The textural analysis, which was conducted via X-ray diffraction, confirmed that the relatively weak basal plane texture developed using the TRC process was formed into a random texture after heat treatment.

  • Multiple scale modeling has been applied to predict defect shape change during the wire rod rolling process. The size difference between bloom and defect prevent using usual FEM approaches due to the enormous number of elements required to depict the defect. The newly developed multiple scale model can visualize defect shape changes during the multi stands rolling process. The defect positioned at the top and side of bloom are smoothed out but the one at the middle evolved as folding or remained as crack. This approach can be used for defect control with roll shape design and initial bloom shape.

  • Demand for pressure sensors is increasing in various fields such as machinery, healthcare and medical care. A recent study is being conducted to create sensors that are more sensitive and have longer linear sections based on measurement principles. In this paper, a film-type sensor with a membrane structure was developed to measure the pressure distributed in the axial direction of a hot roll laminator. Performance of sensors was evaluated by resistance and durability according to membrane diameter. The resistance of the membrane sensor varies according to the contact state and contact area of the electrode. Therefore, the membrane diameter selection is important. Experiments showed the most pronounced variation in resistance under pressure at 8 mm in diameter of membrane. Reliability evaluation of sensors was carried out at room temperature and high temperature. The pressure on the sensor was pressurized 1000 times to measure the initial resistance and the resistance after the evaluation to analyze the change. Sensors showed stable results with low resistance changes of 5.15% and 6.27%, respectively. A large area sensor manufactured using the developed sensor also showed reliable results.

  • In this strip casting, size of the roll separating force is a index representing the solidifying status of the melt. Rolling forces at the start of the casting process can change abruptly due to the overcooling of the leader strip. This inconsistensy leads to machine damage or deficient solidification which results in the failure of the casting. In this study, a mathematical model is derived for the hydraulic servo pressure control system for the twin roll strip caster and its parameters are estimated by the RLS algorithm. Based on the identified model, an one-step ahead predictive control method is applied in order to minimize the transient fluctuation of the rolling force. Its simulation results are compared with those of the conventional PI controllers.

  • Laser direct patterning of the coated photoresist (PMER-NSG31B) layer was studied to make halftone dots on the gravure printing roll. The selective laser hardening of the photoresist by Ar-ion laser(wavelength: 333.6∼363.8 nm) was controlled by the A/O modulator. The coating thickness in the range of 5∼11㎛ could be obtained by using the up-down directional moving device along the vertically located roll. The width, thickness and hardness of the hardened lines farmed under the laser power of 200∼260mW and irradiation time of 4.4∼6.6 $\mu$ sec/point were investigated after developing. The hardened width increased as the coating thickness increased. Though the hardened thickness was changed due to the effect of the developing solution, the hardened layer showed good resistance to the scratching of 2H pencil. Also, the hardened minimum line width of 10㎛ could be obtained. The change of line width was also found after etching, and the minimum line widths of 6㎛ could be obtained. The hardened lines showed the good resistance to the etching solution. Finally, the experimental data could be applied to make gravure halftone dots using the developed imaging process, successfully.

  • A new steel-making process, strip-casting, is introduced. The strip-casting is a new technique making the thin steel strip from the molten steel directly without resorting to repetitive reheating and hot-rolling required in a conventional steel-making method. This paper derives the mathematical model of strip caster, proposes a control strategy for stable startup operation and a fuzzy decision making rule for automatic control mode change in strip-casting process.

  • The ring rolling process involves not only three-dimensional non-steady material flow and continuous change of radius and thickness of the ring workpiece but also heat transfer among workpiece, rolls and environment. In this study, deformation and heat transfer analyses were conducted by using the three-dimensional thermo-rigid-plastic finite element method. Three cases of plain ring rolling process were, respectively, simulated for the predictions of roll forces and the highest temperature zone during the aluminum process that ductile fracture often occurs. In addition, to prevent fishtail phenomena of the ring workpiece, axial rolls were used for this study.

  • In order to analyze the deformation and residual curvature of steel sheets in the strip processing lines, a program for calculating curvature and work hardening of sheet was developed. Strip deformation caused by repeated bending under tension in the process lines was analyzed on the basis of the incremental-plasticity theory with the mixed hardenting model for the purpose of predicting the strip shape and the yield stress change. The developed calculation program was applied to predict curl and gutter of sheets within a 10% difference. The yield stress increment was also predicted with the similar accuracy. Application of the model to tension legvelling process showed that gutter could be controlled by intermesh and elongation. The yield stress increment in the electro-galvanizing line calculated by the developed program was found to be dependent on the yield strength, the applied tension and the diameter of the smallest roll.
