  • Background: Community pharmacists play an important role in tobacco control and adequate training on smoking cessation is essential. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design was used. A one-day workshop on smoking cessation organized by Indonesian Pharmacists Association as part of PCE program was offered to 133 community pharmacists. The workshop consisted of a 3-hour lecture and a 3-hour role-play session. Pre-training and post-training surveys assessed the impact of training on parameters including knowledge, perceived role and self-efficacy with respect to smoking cessation counseling practices. Intention and ability to perform counseling using the 5A framework was assessed after training only. Results: After PCE, knowledge score significantly increased from $24.9{\pm}2.58$ to $35.7{\pm}3.54$ (p<0.001). Perceived role and self-efficacy in smoking cessation counseling also significantly increased from $25.8{\pm}2.73$ to $28.7{\pm}2.24$, and $27.6{\pm}4.44$ to $32.6{\pm}3.63$, respectively (p<0.001). After the workshop, most participants were willing to ask, advise, and assess patients who ready to quit, but were still less likely to assist in quitting plans and arranging follow up counseling. More than 75% pharmacists were able to perform cessation counseling and 65% of them can completely perform a 5A brief intervention. Conclusions: PCE can enhance pharmacists' knowledge, perceived role, self-efficacy in cessation counseling practices, and create willingness and ability to perform cessation counseling. Future training is recommended to improve skills in assisting quitting plans and arranging follow up.

  • This study explored the role of Korean immigrant churches as a social context for Korean American youths, with a specific focus on its role in ethnic socialization. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 Korean American young adults. The results show that such churches serve as a salient social context for Korean American youths in which day-to-day lives are deeply integrated. Specifically, they serve as a salient context for coethnic peer relationships and family interactions. Moreover, Korean immigrant churches play a salient role as an agent of enculturation for Korean American youths by engaging them in cultural socialization, constructing and transmitting immigrant discourse, and providing a coethnic community. Taken as whole, findings suggest a distinct and salient role of immigrant churches in the lives of Korean American youths and highlight the importance of studying the social context specific to the children of immigrants.

  • This study inquired into the life and experiences of two elder sisters who have different individual and familial risk factors and their younger brothers from the mixed-age preschool class through ethnographic research method using participant observation. The results showed that an elder sister from low-income multi-children family played her role very actively through caring for, learning and playing with younger brother during almost of the play situations. On the other hand, the other elder sister who has experience of depression, showed strong possessiveness and neglect of younger brother. As for psychological aspects of sibling relationship, the elder sisters were suffering psychological stresses resulted from excessive role expectation in family or from self-recognition on elder sister role, respectively.

  • The study analyzed reflections on parenting and its meaning represented on mothers' self-reports of filial therapy sessions. The filial therapy program consisted of understanding of child development and parental role, practicing new parenting skill, feedback from the play therapist, lectures on child-centered play therapy, supervision of mother's play therapy sessions, and writing journals. Through repeated meta-parenting experiences during the sessions, four mothers who had relationship problems with their children improved awareness of themselves as parents, authentic understanding of the mother-child relationship and development, and reflections of their parental abilities despite individual differences.

  • It is evidenced that the mass media can play an important role in communicating information to the public. Although some campaigns have failed to achieve success, application of mass communication principles should increase the likelihood of effectiveness. Specifically, campaign strategies should attempt to select message sources that are perceived as credible by the audience. In designing and disseminating messages, the quality of content should be emphasiged as well as the quantity of presencation. The context of message reception should be carefully considered. Selection of channels depends on the configuration of source, superior for most purposes. The crucial role of precampaign audience analysis should not be overlooked.

  • The phase II detoxifying enzymes are inducible by a variety of compounds and play an essential role for the protection of cells. Many of chemoprotective agents trigger cellular signals for the phase II enzyme induction, which subsequently activate gene transcription through ARE activation.(omitted)

  • This paper addresses a theoretical study to calculate the amount of the stored energy due to vacancies during high-strain-rate deformation. The study concerns the role of excess vacancies, which can play an important role to increase the amount of stored energy. Molecular dynamics simulation using a 3D model is carried out and the result clearly shows that the excess vacancies are credited to generation of the stored energy.

  • Diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. In Korea, diabetic kidney disease accounted for 39% of all new dialysis patients in 1998. Diabetic nephropathy is characterized by glomerular hyperfiltration, albuminuria, and expansion of glomerular mesangium. Since glomerular mesangial cells regulate glomerular filtration rates and are capable of producing extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, the functional abnormalities of mesangial cells under diabetic milieu play an important role in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy.(omitted)

  • There are lipid phase theories and aqueous phase theories among the theories of anesthesia. For water clusters induced by anesthetizing molecules, the interaction energies are calculated using an empirical potential function and correlated with the anesthetizing partial pressures for mice. A good agreement was obtained with the theory that the water clusters around anesthetics play an important role on the anesthetic actions.
