Education, Role, and Prospects of Advanced Practice Nurses in Hospice and Palliative Care in South Korea

  • Hospice palliative care refers to holistic care provided by an interdisciplinary team aimed at improving the quality of life of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases and their families. Among interdisciplinary team members, hospice advanced practice nurses (APNs) trained as master's-level advanced nursing professionals are leaders who play an important role in providing patient-centered care and improving the quality of services. The Medical Service Act revised in 2018 requires the scope of practice of APNs in each field to be specified in the Ordinance of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Accordingly, discussions on the role and scope of practice of hospice APNs are actively underway. In this review, the curriculum of hospice APNs, their work responsibilities and roles, and their current status are reviewed, and the future direction of the hospice APN system is also discussed.

  • The mammalian intestines harbor trillions of commensal microorganisms composed of thousands of species that are collectively called gut microbiota. Among the microbiota, bacteria are the predominant microorganism, with viruses, protozoa, and fungi (mycobiota) making up a relatively smaller population. The microbial communities play fundamental roles in the maturation and orchestration of the immune landscape in health and disease. Primarily, the gut microbiota modulates the immune system to maintain homeostasis and plays a crucial role in regulating the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of inflammatory, neuronal, and metabolic disorders. The microbiota modulates the host immune system through direct interactions with immune cells or indirect mechanisms such as producing short-chain acids and diverse metabolites. Numerous researchers have put extensive efforts into investigating the role of microbes in immune regulation, discovering novel immunomodulatory microbial species, identifying key effector molecules, and demonstrating how microbes and their key effector molecules mechanistically impact the host immune system. Consequently, recent studies suggest that several microbial species and their immunomodulatory molecules have therapeutic applicability in preclinical settings of multiple disorders. Nonetheless, it is still unclear why and how a handful of microorganisms and their key molecules affect the host immunity in diverse diseases. This review mainly discusses the role of microbes and their metabolites in T helper cell differentiation, immunomodulatory function, and their modes of action.

RFID/USN 보안을 위한 프로토콜 설계 (Design of protocol for RFID/USN security)

  • Payment and security requirement are playing an increasingly critical role in RFID system, allegedly the core of the ubiquitous, especially in logistics. Therefore, security technology has been playing essential role gradually unlike the past when only the perception of equipment was considered important technology. The current encoding system allows the access only to the user who has the secret key. Many encoding algorithm has been studied to ensure the security of secret key. Security protocol is the most typical way to authorize appropriate user perception by using the data and secret key to proceed the encoding and transmit it to the system in order to confirm the user. However, RFID system which transmits more than dozens of data per second cannot be used if the algorithm and protocol of the existing wired system are used because the performance will degrade as a consequence. Security protocol needs to be designed in consideration of property of RFID and hardware. In this paper, a protocol was designed using SNEP(Sensor Network Encryption Protocol), the security protocol used for the sensor similar to RFID- not the current system used in wired environment- and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography: oval curve encoding), the encoding algorithm.

한국 수학사와 '경북학파'의 탄생: 경북대학교 수학 연구 전통의 형성과 발전 (History of Mathematics in Korea and the Birth of 'Kyungpook School': The formation of mathematics research tradition in Kyungpook National University)

  • This paper tries to show the formation of 'Kyungpook School' that is a nickname given to mathematicians of Kyungpook National University (KNU). In the early period, the role of professor Park Jung-gi was the most important drive to set the research tradition. He made Korea's first english journal in mathematics, Kyungpook Mathematical Journal KMJ which became a cornerstone for students to join the international academic community. Professor Ki U-hang published the most amount of papers in Korea in 1970s and became a role model for young scholars. In this background, KNU's Topology and Geometry Research Center at KNU was chosen as the only Science Research Center in mathematics in 1989, and KNU's mathematicians could get a long-period support for capable mathematics researchers' community.

지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 활성화를 위한 과학관의 역할 제고 (Enhancing the Role of Science Museums to Promote Community Cooperation-Based Science Culture)

  • 이 연구는 과학관의 새로운 역할을 소개하는 것이다. 이 연구에 국내에서는 7개, 국외에서는 4개의 대표할만한 과학관의 과학문화 실무자들이 참여하여 설문에 응답하였다. 우선 과학관에서 실시하고 있는 과학문화프로그램은 무엇이 있는지, 그 프로그램이 성공적인지 실패인지, 실패라면 실패의 개선책이 무엇이 있는지 파악하였다. 이를 토대로 국내의 과학관의 이상적이고 현실적인 지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 프로그램을 개발하게 하였고 이로 인한 새로운 과학관의 역할을 탐색하였다. 현재 실시하는 과학문화 프로그램의 경우는 성공적인 것과 그렇지 않은 것은 홍보에 따른 관람객들의 참여가 가장 큰 변수였으며, 개선사항으로도 홍보의 중요성에 대해서 언급하였다. 성공적인 지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 프로그램을 위해서는 적극적인 홍보, 사전 운영팀, 전담 인력, 개방적 생각, 목적이 같은 타 기관의 선정, 양쪽 기관의 의지, 경제적인 지원 스폰서를 중요한 변수라 하겠다. 국내 과학관의 경우, 실질적으로 프로그램을 개발 및 운영한 결과 성공적인 협력기반 프로그램은 같은 지역의 타기관과의 협력, 서로 상생(win-win)연계, 그리고 이를 담당하는 전력인력이 중요한 변수로 작용하였고, 참여하는 과학관의 지역적 강점을 최대한 살린 것임을 보여주었다. 21세기에 기대되는 과학문화 프로그램은 지역 인적 물리적 인프라를 최대한 사용하고, 시민들의 요구를 반영하고, 지역사회에서 주도적으로 거점 역할을 하고, 협력기반 전문인력을 양성하며, 정부나 그 지역의 지자체와 원활한 소통을 할 수 있는 과학관에 의해 가능하다고 할 수 있겠다.
