  • The paper summarizes the irradiation test and post-irradiation examination (PIE) data for the U-Mo low-enriched fuel that was irradiated in the MIR reactor under the RERTR Program. The PIE data were analyzed for both full-size fuel rods and mini-rods with atomized powder dispersed in Al matrix as well as with additions of 2%, 5% and 13% of silicon in the matrix and ZrN protective coating on the fuel particles. The full-size fuel rods were irradiated up to an average burnup of ${\sim}60%^{235}U$; the mini-rods were irradiated to an average burnup of ${\sim}85%^{235}U$. The presented data show a significant increase of the void fraction in the U-Mo alloy as the U-235 burnup rises from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%. The effect of irradiation test conditions and U-235 burnup were analyzed with regard to the formation of an interaction layer between the matrix and fuel particles as well as generation of porosity in the U-Mo alloy. Shown here are changes in distribution of U fission products as the U-235 burnup increases from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%.

  • In this paper, the governing equation and the boundary conditions of deploying rods are derived by using Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin method using the comparison function of the instantaneous natural modes is adopted by which the governing equation is discretized. Based on the discretized equations, the time integration analysis is performed and the longitudinal vibrations for the deploying and the retrieving velocity are analyzed.

  • For this study, SM45C steel rods using generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW method. and then it was studied about estimation of fatigue strength and the region of infinite life. From this result, it is demanded that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected in the region of the lowest infinite life of heat affected zone.

  • The characteristics of adjuster rods have been studied for the application to DUPIC core in two aspects: the half an hour xenon override capability and power flattening. The transient analysis has shown that the adjusters used for CANDU 6 have the reactivity worths more than required to override xenon load for DUPIC core. Parametric study has shown that removing 7 adjuster rods in the middle row and adjusting the strength of the rest of adjuster rods can provide the performances no worse than those of natural uranium core.

  • The horizontal continuous casting process with the heated mold was applied to obtain the unidirectionally solidified rods($4{\sim}8mm$ dia.) of pure copper with good surface quality. The results could be summarized as follows. 1. The unidirectional solidification of pure copper rods with good surface(mirror surface) quality could be obtained by placing the S/L interface inside the heated mold cavity even though the cast copper rods were covered with thin copper oxide layer. 2. The casting speed for 4mm dia. rods with mirror surfaces was affected significantly by the mold-cooler distance rather than the cooling flow rate when other casting conditions were fixed. 3. The casting speed was the main factor affecting the oxidation of copper during the continuous casting and the thickness of copper oxide layer decreased almost linearly as the casting speed increased.

  • In the vertebrate retina, rods mediate twilight vision and cones daylight vision. Rods have been purified easily from the retina, and thus the phototransduction mechanism in rods is now well documented. However, it has not been possible to purify cones in large quantities, and therefore, the knowledge on the mechanism in cones is limited. Here we report purification of carp (Cyprinus carpio) cones with a stepwise Percoll gradient. Using purified cells, we compared the phototransduction mechanism between rods and cones. The results showed that both transducin activation and phosphodiesterase activation are less effective, and visual pigment phosphorylation is faster in cones. These differences explain lower light-sensitivity and briefer photoresponse time course in cones.

  • This report is on the Reinforcing System(MFRI) for Concrete Structure using FRP ROD & High-Performance Mortar. The main characteristic of this system is as follow. First, the fiber rods in this system have seven times greater tensile strength than general reinforcing steel bars(re-bar) and the weight is a fifth lighter. Camels coated on the fiber rods' surfaces to improve adhesive strength and pull-out strength. Second, high strength shotcrete mortar is has very good workability and low rebound rate. After installing the Fiber Rods, Shotcrete mortar Is applied or sprayed to finish reinforcement. Finally, MFRI system has excellent fire-resisting performance and sogood tolerance against external environment by inserting fiber rods and reinforcing materials into mortar which has high compressive strength. It is applied to bridge slab, utility box and tunnel of civil engineering works, and beam and slab of building structures.

  • This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin rods undergoing large rotational deformation. Rods are thin objects such as ropes and hairs that can be abstracted as one-dimensional structures. Development of a real-time physical model that can produce visually convincing animation of thin rods has been a challenging problem in computer graphics. We adopt continuum mechanics to formulate the governing equation, and develop a modal warping technique for rods to integrate the governing equation in real-time; This is a novel extension of the previous modal warping techniques developed for solids and shells. Experimental results show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes and it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations.

  • Lightning has a broad frequency spectrum from DC to a few MHz. Consequently, the high frequency performance of grounding systems for protection against lightning should be evaluated, with the distributed parameter circuit model in a uniform soil being used to simulate grounding impedances. This paper proposes a simulation method which applies the distributed parameter circuit model for the frequency-dependent impedance of vertically driven ground rods by considering multi-layered soil structures where ground rods are buried. The Matlab program was used to calculate the frequency-dependent ground impedances for two ground rods of different lengths. As a result, an increase of the length of ground rod is not always followed by a decrease of grounding impedance, at least at a high frequency. The results obtained using the newly proposed simulation method considering multi-layered soil structures are in good agreement with the measured results.

  • Grounding rods as a discharge path are normally used to ensure the safety of human beings and facilities from the over-voltages and the over·current. Each grounding mode class 1, class 2, class 3, special class 4- has prescribed ground resistance values which are kept by the utilities. However, in the distribution system, it is very difficult for grounding rods to obtain the prescribed ground resistance values because of the limits of installation space. Therefore, in this paper, the grounding effects of the grounding copper bands which are recently developed to use efficiently in small area and the grounding rods are compared by testing the ground resistance values, ground potential rise(GPR), and step voltage in various cases.
