In this study, the prediction methods for the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 46 monitored points of 37 Center-Cored Rockfill Dams (CCRDs). Results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement increases with elapsed time, and from the relationship between the dam height and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction, it is confirmed that the internal settlement was largely evaluated when the coarse-grained material was used as the dam core. This internal settlement increased in proportion to the dam height. In addition, the crest settlement of the CCRD with the core compacted with fine-grained material was relatively large. It is expected that the results of this study would provide the practical tool for the design, construction and management of CCRDs.
In this research, the algorithm for simulating specific grain size distribution(GSD) with large diameter granular material was developed using the distinct element analysis program $PFC^{3D}$(Particle Flow Code). This modeling approach can generate the initial distinct elements without clump logic or cluster logic and prevent distinct element from escaping through the confining walls during the process. Finally the proposed distinct element model is used to simulate large triaxial compression test of the rockfill material and we compared the simulation output with lab test results. Simulation results of Assembly showed very well agreement with the GSD of the test sample and numerical modeling of granular material would be possible for various stress conditions using this application through the calibration.
Longitudinal cracks have occurred on the crest of dams soon after their construction of two earth-rocfill dams located in Samlangjin. They are a pair of pumped storage dams constructed for generation of electrical power. The upper dam and lower dam are subjected to the variation of water level more than 10m once in a day alteratively. This paper deals with the finding of possible causes for longitudinal cracks about upper dam. The dominant cause was considered to be due to fluctuation of water load, for which numerical analysis was carried out using the hyperbolic model. In order to obtain parameters necessary to the analysis, a series of triaxial tests was performed for both core and rock material. Also dynamic triaxial test was performed to obtain dynamic properties of soils, which could be used as input data to simulate frequent variation of stress change due to the water fluctuation. It was known from the numerical analysis that the confining pressure of upper 4m from the top of the crest become negative after repeating of water load, meaning that tension cracks occurred in the top portion of the crest. The depth of longitudinal cracks has been investigated by digging test pit on the crest. This results agree with the field observation.
Seepage rate through the core zone of rockfill dam, estimated from graphical technique and the equation by Sakamoto (1998), is different from the real condition because of neglecting unsaturated flow. With existing method to estimate total seepage rate, it is difficult to understand the tendency of total seepage rate changes by reservoir water level change. Steady state seepage rate and the factors affecting the time needed to attain to changes of reservoir water level and saturated hydraulic conductivity and unsaturated hydraulic properties of core material are analysed thorough the 2-D steady and unsteady state seepage analyses of Soyanggang dam. Numerical results revealed that the seepage rate can be expressed by the linear equation form and the value of unsaturated soil parameter n is the most important factor affecting the seepage rate and the time needed to attain steady state. The estimation method presented in this study can be used by the designer and the personnel of dam safety for convenient estimation of seepage rate and quantitative analysis of measured seepage rate without 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses.

In constructions of dams and ports structure, gravels are used as principle structural materials. Gravels have different material property compared with other materials like soil and concretes, etc. For example, material properties of gravels obtained from normal triaxial compression test are usually overestimated due to scale and penetration effects. Also, material properties of gravels under dynamic loads are the main interest when structural behavior of rockfill dam under earthquake loads is analyzed. The development of large triaxial compression apparatus is needed for the better estimation of material property of gravel. This paper reports work in progress to development of large triaxial compression apparatus.
Bedding zone in CRFD (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) requires bearing capacity to support the concrete face slab uniformly. Also, shear strength which is a key factor in slope stability and impermeability which is to prevent a loss of soils in case of leakage of concrete slab face are needed. In this study, trial prototype construction for bedding zone in CRFD was performed to investigate the compaction characteristics of bedding zone according to the frequency of compaction, water contents and so on. As a results of series of field test, the compaction characteristics of bedding zone in CRFD was affected considerably by the depth of compaction layer and frequency of compaction.
This research aimed to predict the seepage rate in the base rocks of a concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD) by conducting numerical analysis under various conditions. We examined the relationship between basic grouting and seepage, emphasizing the significance of the permeability coefficient of the grouting material and the rock. Moreover, we observed a decrease in seepage with an increase in the cross-sectional area of the dam. The results of this study provide essential input factors and outcomes of numerical analysis, incorporating various parameters, to inform the design phase. Additionally, our findings offer a dependable approach for calculating a reasonable seepage rate during both operational and maintenance phases.
Recently, the construction of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) is increasing because rock material resources are plenty in Korea. Bedding zone in the CFRD is necessary enough bearing capacity to support the concrete face slab uniformly and enough impermeability to prevent the loss of fine soils in case of leakage from the concrete slab face. Therefore, cut-off the water leakage in bedding zone securely is the key factor influencing the safety of CFRD. Tested materials satisfied with the specification of particle size distribution at the Bedding Zone area are chosen for conducting permeability tests, which are done to evaluate the property of cut off the materials. Based on the test results, the effects of cut off the materials are investigated by considering the coefficient of permeability, the soil particle distribution, and the dry unit weight. Especially, the relationships between coefficient of permeability with effective size(D10), dry unit weight, and weight passing percent the No.4 sieve are suggested, and also the variation of coefficient of permeability with time are proposed.
Today, many important concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs) have been built on the world, and some of these important structures are located on the strong seismic regions. In this reason, examination and monitoring of these water construction's seismic behaviour is very important for the safety and future of these dams. In this study, the nonlinear seismic behaviour of Ilısu CFR dam which was built in Turkey in 2017, is investigated for various reservoir water heights taking into account 1995 Kobe near-fault and far-fault ground motions. Three dimensional (3D) finite difference model of the dam is created using the FLAC3D software that is based on the finite difference method. The most suitable mesh range for the 3D model is chosen to achieve the realistic numerical results. Mohr-Coulomb nonlinear material model is used for the rockfill materials and foundation in the seismic analyses. Moreover, Drucker-Prager nonlinear material model is considered for the concrete slab to represent the nonlinearity of the concrete. The dam body, foundation and concrete slab constantly interact during the lifetime of the CFRDs. Therefore, the special interface elements are defined between the dam body-concrete slab and dam body-foundation due to represent the interaction condition in the 3D model. Free field boundary condition that was used rarely for the nonlinear seismic analyses, is considered for the lateral boundaries of the model. In addition, quiet artificial boundary condition that is special boundary condition for the rigid foundation in the earthquake analyses, is used for the bottom of the foundation. The hysteric damping coefficients are separately calculated for all of the materials. These special damping values is defined to the FLAC3D software using the special fish functions to capture the effects of the variation of the modulus and damping ratio with the dynamic shear-strain magnitude. Total 4 different reservoir water heights are taken into account in the seismic analyses. These water heights are empty reservoir, 50 m, 100 m and 130 m (full reservoir), respectively. In the nonlinear seismic analyses, near-fault and far-fault ground motions of 1995 Kobe earthquake are used. According to the numerical analyses, horizontal displacements, vertical displacements and principal stresses for 4 various reservoir water heights are evaluated in detail. Moreover, these results are compared for the near-fault and far-faults earthquakes. The nonlinear seismic analysis results indicate that as the reservoir height increases, the nonlinear seismic behaviour of the dam clearly changes. Each water height has different seismic effects on the earthquake behaviour of Ilısu CFR dam. In addition, it is obviously seen that near-fault earthquakes and far field earthquakes create different nonlinear seismic damages on the nonlinear earthquake behaviour of the dam.
Nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics, expressed in terms of normalized shear modulus reduction curve (G/$G_{max}-\log\gamma$, G/$G_{max}$ curve) and damping curve (D-$\log\gamma$), are important input parameters with shear wave velocity profile ($V_s$-profile) in the seismic analysis of (new or existing) fill dam. In this paper, the reasonable and economical methods to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics for core zone and rockfill zone respectively are presented. For the core zone, 111 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 98 damping curves which meet the requirements of core material were compiled and representative curves and ranges were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~100 kPa, 100 kPa~200 kPa, more than 200 kPa). The reliability of the proposed curves for the core zone were verified by comparing with the resonant column test results of two kinds of core materials. For the rockfill zone, 135 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 65 damping curves were compiled from the test results of gravelly materials using large scale testing equipments. The representative curves and ranges for G/$G_{max}$ were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~50 kPa, 50 kPa~100 kPa, more than 100 kPa) and those for damping were proposed independently of confining pressure. The reliability of the proposed curves for the rockfill zone were verified by comparing with the large scale triaxial test results of rockfill materials in the B-dam which is being constructed.
