The purposes of this research are to analyze the internal settlement behavior of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) typed 'D dam' and to evaluate the stability of the 'D dam' during dam construction using internal settlement measurements and results of numerical analysis. The field measurements were obtained during dam construction period. The numerical analysis was also carried out for the same construction period. The numerical analysis focused mainly on prediction of stress and displacement behavior of 'D dam' during dam construction stage using input parameters obtained from laboratory tests, i.e. large triaxial tests. The behavior of 'D dam' was evaluated to be stable from comparing the results of field measurements and numerical analysis. A simple empirical equation is also presented to predict final settlement at the completion of dam construction, using settlement measurement monitored during dam embankment.

Ground motions in near source region of large crustal earthquakes are significantly affected by rupture directivity and tectonic fling. These effects are the strongest at longer periods and they can have a significant impact on Engineering Structures. In this paper, it is aimed to determine near-fault ground motion effects on the nonlinear response of dams including dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. Four different types of dam, which are gravity, arch, concrete faced rockfill and clay core rockfill dams, are selected to investigate the near-fault ground motion effects on dam responses. The behavior of reservoir is taken into account by using Lagrangian approach. Strong ground motion records of Duzce (1999), Northridge (1994) and Erzincan (1992) earthquakes are selected for the analyses. Displacements, maximum and minimum principal stresses are determined by using the finite element method. The displacements and principal stresses obtained from the four different dam types subjected to these nearfault strong-ground motions are compared with each other. It is seen from the results that near-fault ground motions have different impacts on the dam types.
A mathematical wetting model is usually used to predict the deformation of core wall rockfill dams induced by the wetting effect. In this paper, a series of wetting triaxial tests on a rockfill was conducted using a large-sized triaxial apparatus, and the wetting deformation behavior of the rockfill was studied. The wetting strains were found to be related to the confining pressure and shear stress levels, and two empirical equations, which are regarded as the proposed mathematical wetting model, were proposed to express these properties. The stress and deformation of a core wall rockfill dam was studied by using finite element analysis and the proposed wetting model. On the one hand, the simulations of the wetting model can estimate well the observed wetting strains of the upstream rockfill of the dam, which demonstrated that the proposed wetting model is applicable to express the wetting deformation behavior of the rockfill specimen. On the other hand, the simulated additional deformation of the dam induced by the wetting effect is thought to be reasonable according to practical engineering experience, which indicates the potential of the model in dam engineering.

In this study, the suitability of CFGD(concrete faced gravefill dam) was investigated by examining the strength and deformation characteristics of a gravelfill material, a CFGD main fill material, and comparing them with those of several rockfill dam materials. The gravelfill material exhibited similar strength and deformation properties to those of the main fill materials of existing stable large rockfill dams. Since not only CFGD has environmental and economic advantages over CFRD, but its main fill material compares favorably with those of the existing stable CFRDs, CFGD may be the best choice when natural gravel materials are abundant in the vicinity of the dam construction location.

In this study, quantitative sensitivity analysis on rockfill material influencing the dam crest displacement of Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam(CFRD) subjected to earthquake loading was carried out. The purpose of this study is to indicate the most important input parameter and to show the quantitative variation of displacement at the crest of CFR type dam during earthquake loading with this input parameter. From the sensitivity analysis, it was found that the crest displacement of CFR type dam subjected to dynamic loading was absolutely affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material and the effect of friction angle of it was negligible. This relative difference of sensitivity was more outstanding in case of crest settlement than in case of crest horizontal displacement. Also, it was found that the extent of effect of shear modulus on the displacement at the crest of CFRD due to dynamic loading decreased as maximum amplitude of input acceleration increased.

In this study, 1-g shaking table tests on the model of CFR(Concrete-Face Rockfill) type "D" dam in operation and the model of virtual ECRD(Earth Core Rockfill Dam) of which static stability is about the same compared to the model of CFRD were carried out. The purpose of this study is to compare the seismic performance of CFRD and ECRD from the analysis of model test results. Displacement response behavior of the dam was examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of model dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of accelerometers installed with dam height were examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Also, in the case of ECRD, patterns of excess pore pressure generation with dam height were examined. From the test results, it was found that accelerations of dam crest of CFRD and ECRD were amplified about 1.52 times and 2 times compared to the accelerations of dam bottom, respectively. amplification was outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. This phenomenon was outstanding in case of ECRD. And it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of CFRD were 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and 12.3cm (0.2% of dam height), respectively. Also, it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of ECRD were 4.3cm (0.1% of dam height) and 5.5cm (0.11% of dam height), respectively.
The hyperbolic stress-strain model has been shown to be valid for modeling nonlinear stress-strain behavior for rockfill materials. The Duncan-Chang nonlinear constitutive model was adopted to characterize the behavior of the modeled rockfill materials in this study. Accurately estimating the model parameters of rockfill materials is a key problem for simulating dam deformations during both the dam construction period and the dam operation period. In order to estimate model parameters, triaxial compression experiments of rockfill materials were performed. Based on a genetic algorithm, the constitutive model parameters of the rockfill material were determined from the triaxial compression experimental data. The investigation results show that the predicted strains provide satisfactory precision when compared with the observed strains and the strains forecasted by a gradient-based optimization algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed inversion procedure of model parameters was verified by experimental investigation in a laboratory.
The purpose of this study is to propose a method that can reliably evaluate the fundamental period of a rockfill dam using the micro-earthquake records, which were obtained at the domestic dam sites. For total 20 micro-earthquake records obtained at 7 domestic rockfill dam sites against 6 earthquake events which recently occurred, the fundamental periods of seven rockfill dams were evaluated by two kinds of methods; one is a method using acceleration amplification ratio and the other is a method using acceleration response spectrum ratio. Applicability of each method to evaluation of fundamental periods of domestic rockfill dams was examined. In the moderate seismicity region like our country, the method using acceleration response spectrum ratio, which could evaluate the fundamental period of the rockfill dam using the ratio between the response spectrum for acceleration observed at the dam crest and that observed at the dam base or abutment, proved to be reliable and was proposed in this study. From the results of analyses, it was found that the proposed method could consistently evaluate the fundamental period of the rockfill dam and the results obtained by the proposed method were very similar to the results by the existing method which was proposed from the analysis for the earthquake records observed at Japanese dam sites.
Or this study, prevailing design and construction methods of dam under various unfavorable conditions are summarized. for example, foundation treatment with large scale alluvium site or weathered rock mass, dam constructing techniques with unfavorable topographic conditions are studied for the better understanding of relating engineers. Also, zoning by using weak rocks and sand-gravel fill techniques are summed up.
