  • Combustion test facility for liquid rocket engine using kerosene and liquid oxygen has been developed for the purpose of cooling and performance study. Test engine of thrust under 1.0 KN can be evaluated, and the real combustion test ensures a good operation of the combustion test facility. Combustion test facility will be modified to supply natural gas and liquefied natural gas as fuel and to give a regenerative cooling test.

  • Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight nay be perturbed with unexpectedly large amplitude and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, several quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, five stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

  • Acoustic coupled combustion instability, which is one of the most undesirable phenomena in the development of liquid propellant rocket engine, can cause serious damage to a rocket itself, and must be avoided by all means. Unfortunately, KSR-III rocket went through combustion instability during engine start at the propulsion test article No.2. To resolve the problem, time sequence (cyclogram) has been changed, and baffle system has been applied. In consequence of change, stable combustion was achieved.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation, which stems from phase correlation between unsteady heat release and acoustic fluctuation, can cause severe vibration and incite the excessive local heat transfer inside the rocket engine. It is very important to understand and prevent this phenomenon in the way of rocket engine development. In this study, the propulsion test facility of KSR-III, which is the first liquid propellant rocket developed by KARI, will be introduced. and the characteristics of thermoacoustic ocillation occurred at the facility will be examined.

  • For the successful development of the main engine of KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)-III, Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) carried out the experimental study on the subscale model engines. Several types of engines were tested on the Small Liquid Rocket Engine Test Facility. One of the typical test results of a Sub. engine(Sub. Mod.3) is presented here. It uses the Jet A-1 as fuel, liquid oxygen as oxidizer, and Tri-Ethyl Aluminium(TEA1) as ignition agent. The gas pressure feed system is adopted as a feeding mechanism and the design chamber pressure is 200psia. The physical phenomena are described in three regimes(ignition, transient, and steady state) with the pressure, thrust, flowrate and image data. And the pressure oscillation is analyzed in Fourier domain (<500Hz). Then we conclude that in this experiment, the engine shows the characteristic low frequency of 80Hz and it is stable for that frequency of pressure oscillation.

  • Cooling characteristics of a liner were investigated by a film cooling method using a gas nitrogen in a rocket engine. High temperature gas of this test was made by mixing liquid nitrogen with combustion gas of a liquid rocket. A supply system of gas nitrogen was additionally constructed to the existing test facility of liquid rocket engine, and a new test section consisted of a liner and a gas injection ring was manufactured. A 10 second firing test for finding cooling characteristics of the liner was successfully conducted and liner surface temperatures and hot gas temperature was obtained.

  • To develop a liquid rocket engine with high reliability and safety under constraints of limited time and budget an optimal diagnosis system for the engine needs to be developed in parallel with the development of the engine. This paper is intended to set a development direction of the diagnosis system for the liquid rocket engine through the literature survey and addresses possible engine defects, characteristics of parameters for diagnosis and diagnostic methods including real-time diagnosis, post-test/post-flight diagnosis, fault detection method, parameter circuit method and test diagnosis. In addition tasks to be performed in the design and operation phases of the engine and foreign application case of engine diagnosis are presented.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed a staged combustion cycle rocket (SCCR) engine with high specific impulse to send a 3-ton class satellite into geostationary orbit while conducting a Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) II project. The SCCR engine is different from the KSLV-II engine, which is an open cycle engine using a gas-generator. The SCCR engine with a closed cycle engine is composed of a pre-burner, a turbo pump, and a main combustor. The technology demonstration model (TDM0) was assembled and tested in the 7ton-class engine combustion test facility of Naro Space Center, and the combustion test was successfully conducted.
